The Deserter debuff needs to go or a change

People will kick for anything and that’s fine, but the punishment is waiting again in queue and time wasted why add more to that? Say you queue for 20 minutes, kicked in 5 because reasons, wait 30 minutes to even queue up again and then another 20 or so to play depending on run or role as you’re in queue. That’s nearly an hour wasted because of something happened almost out the door. This is not to say you have genuinely bad apples but a lot more innocents are kicked than nothing such as a “Hold on, my kid needs me real quick” or “Cat on Keyboard” because yes, people kicked for that, only to be met with a 30 minute debuff because players can not wait 2 minutes? If that?

This should be changed to if you’re kicked, you do not get a debuff. Players are easily replaced as it is. Or, nerf the timer. 30 minutes is way too much for a video game that’s this kick happy. If it was not abused this much, you would not have so many players coming on here and suggesting a change. Do something about it.

Also, I would like to boldly suggest that the everyone in the party shows who started the kick and the kickee gets to see it as well.

There, that might lessen peoples power grip.

Queues are fine even on my server if you’re running H+ dungeons. Having the debuff is nessessary because people (mainly tanks and healers) would just hold groups hostage when they don’t get the dungeon they want until their kicked to avoid the debuff.

It’s fine from what I’ve seen, no one getting kicked for a cat on their keyboard, someone saying brb or anything that isn’t simply bad/greedy gameplay. I’ve even DC’d and had gone offline for a minute and I didn’t receive a kick it’s not happening as often as you and others are saying and honestly it’s funny that this keeps popping up when a thread exactly like this dies.

This isn’t a good idea because if it were to fail all it’d do is cause unneeded strife within the group.

No it happens and then you have the kicks where people do not read the name of the player being kicked and a text going “Bad healer” but then kick the tank on “accident”. The reason why players keep posting it because it’s becoming way worse especially in higher tiers.

It’s a great idea. This will help the obvious abuse of the system. If you really think someone is disruptive then go on and be the hero.

Or, we could just nerf the timer down to 15 minutes. I’d even take that.

If you want the Deserter debuff to go then get rid of the players that abused the game to make it where it’s necessary to have it. Then I’ll gladly say take it away and do away with it.

Its fine from what ive seen as well.

Got kicked on my hpal because the group wiped, but two dps killed themselves and another top’d out at 12k. The top DPS on the boss fight was 12k, but they decided to kick the healer who failed to carry them.

I just /shrug and que again, i had no deserter buff. Even if i did i would just log another toon or PVP for 30 mins, no big deal.

I’ve never played ANY game where the VTK was this heavily abused, none. The reduction of time seems like a fair suggestion but I realise players want the highest maximum punishment which proves my point on how toxic this game is, hah.

You don’t get one if you’re 15 minutes in the dungeon. This accounts for both being kicked and straight up leaving.

Well your kick was just then, if you’re failing as a healer.

Most games don’t last 20 years with new systems being replaced every so often because of their abuse by the players. This is a very player-centric caused issue, that’s why systems in the game are so watered down and strict not allowing much of any kind of freedom. If the timer is reduced then bad actors will see that and go “Oh only 15 minutes before I can grief again.”

They will do it again anyway. The guy above just said it wasn’t a big deal to eat 30 so I guess he will just queue up again to troll heal others. 15 is ‘fair’ for the most of us who are innocently kicked and still a bit of a hit to those that still have to wait. At some point though, might as well seriously report the ones that’s that disruptive.

A simple solution: Give exp bonuses for specific dungeons, without needing to queue for random and remove this debuff, let people play whatever dungeons they want.

no, we want the maximum punishment because of how toxic the game is. in fact blizzard very recently increased the punishment window because people were being toxic in retail since they’d queue up for a specific dungeon hunting the trinket off the first boss and then leave if they didn’t get it and then people who filled would just leave cause they also wanted the trinket.

the whole reason the deserter debuff was placed on people getting kicked in the first place was because Cataclysm made rampant the abuse that people did with the vote to kick feature whenever they got Occulus in Wrath

This a poor way of solving that. Just have things drops off at the end of the dungeon or final boss. Why on earth would you punish the entire community with the kick system because of a single item? Again, no other game has these odd, messy choices when it comes to looting or VTK.

Yes I’m not denying that it does happen I’m just stating that it’s not happening to the degree you and others claim.

Not it’s not I’ve spammed H+ and the only time someone gets kicked is when they’re greedy or a clueless player holding everyone back.

You’re funny, it’s a dungeon not a raid, why would all of the loot be handed out at the end of the dungeon? Just deal with the system in place, it’s truly not as bad as you’re portraying it.

While there are several things about your post and the way you’ve explained your position that I like, I’m not sure how accurate this is. It sounds like a nice idea, but there does seem to be an overrepresentation of complaints on these forums, so I’d take that with a grain of salt.

It would be interesting to know what the benefits of the debuff are, and whether there are measurements in place (observability/metrics gathering) that detail its effectiveness for Blizzard.

I mentioned this in another thread recently, but whenever anyone asks for change to Classic, I tend to look at Retail and see if whatever they are discussing has been addressed there, as if it has that seems to me to often serve as a blueprint for how they might approach the problem in Classic.

On the one hand, you might see that for instances that have been formed through automatic group matchmaking, you still have the same or a very similar vote-to-kick mechanic, but on the other hand, they have effectively removed the feature from end-game content.

Personally, I don’t immediately see issues that would arise if they changed/lowered the debuff time for being removed from a group (that doesn’t mean there wouldn’t be any; just simply that they aren’t immediately apparent to me).

Of course, as almost always, these issues people have with automated grouping tools go away if you form or join your own groups. That’s an option, particularly if you have a special situation where maybe you need to AFK for several minutes multiple times a run.

And while it’s quite possible that those who post on these forums about the negatives of vote-to-kick are mostly outliers who are experiencing being kicked for no known reason seemingly almost every run, and that I am personally (and quite consistently) an outlier on the end of almost never having experienced it, and seeing it in groups so infrequently, if I didn’t read the forums, I would practically forget the feature exists, I’d be curious as to what extent this is an “issue” as well.

This would be an interesting can of worms to deal with for everyone involved.

Anyway, interesting ideas. Who knows if we’ll see changes to the classic progression version of the game along these lines.

Ultimately, I’d be interested in access to any data/metrics that might suggest this is an actual issue, but I can’t help but think it just isn’t. It’s a game, so any claim that there’s time being wasted is moot. And, there are so many workarounds including, but not limited to playing other characters, forming your own groups, or doing something else for the duration of the debuff.

Best of luck out there!

:woman_shrugging:

i just say lower the timer. 30 is a lot to chew but ive learned yesterday that retail has a heavier hand from a recent patch in tww so if anything they’ll add it here too lol.

If your being kicked 5 different times from 5 different groups it is safe to say you are the problem not the groups!!!

Practically every heroic+ I’ve queued for I went with 2 to 4 guildies. Can’t get kicked if you have the majority

Game is better with friends anyways.

You also cant kick the bad players if you go 3/5 guild run you need the other person who isnt being V2K to vote yes.

Yep, just got kicked from a group because someone body pulled extra and we died, but they kicked me as the tank because I couldn’t pick them all up. Sick game, Blizzard.

Wait… why weren’t you able to pick them up? With how much aoe threat tanks can do now. This shouldn’t have been an issue.
