The Default UI - It's bad

So a lot of people are commenting on the action bars, which I get, because I made 2 of my 3 points about them.

However, I’m curious what everyone’s opinion is about the character sheet?

I agree, and that is true for a lot of people clearly. I think you have missed my point though, what I find better and what you find better could be completely different. If they improved the UI in a way that made me happy it might make it even worse for you.

So they’ve redesigned their UI, some players like it more and some like it less, that’s a wash and they’ve objectively wasted their time. Then you have people that don’t really care one way or the other, but are simply angry it changed from what they knew, making the whole ordeal a net loss for Blizzard.

Are there changes that will be a net positive for Blizzard? Probably. However, they allow people to make addons that change the UI. So why would Blizzard put money into changing something that works when there are already options for people that want something different?

I’m not a clicker either, unless you’re referring to the menu buttons. For example I rebind C, because it’s too good to waste on the character sheet.

So my point (except for the menu buttons being in the far lower right makes it annoying to get to them quickly with your cursoer) isn’t about clicking, it is about how that information is presented on my screen.

@epheria

You could be right. I’d like to think however that there is surely a better design that the majority of people would like.
I can’t imagine the current iteration is that. Maybe I’m wrong? I hope I’m not, because I hate it soo much. lol

Your suggestion might be best posted on the actual BETA FORUM and not GD, unless you just came here to ask ppl here what they thought about it.

Unless you already posted this there, and decided to come to General D for whatever reason (feedback/more ideas to propose/suggest to the BETA crew). :woman_shrugging:

:sparkles:

For whatever reason, I can’t make a post over there, even though I have beta access. shrug

Hmm…that’s odd. Could be down for lololol Blizzard reasons. lol I’d keep trying, funky forums do funky things.

Also as for posting SS’s…you can upload SS’s to IMGUR and use that to post, just type a space between the link(https ://) and ppl can simply toss it in their browser and view that way, removing the space oc. You won’t be able to post SS/gifs etc until you raise your TL to level 3, and from the looks of your post history you’re quite a ways off.

:sparkles:

For the record, I do agree with your points. The UI update they did awhile back (beginning of BFA maybe?) emulated a lot of the changes made by UI addons that were/are popular. However, people who liked the default UI complained that their UI was changed, but the people who used addons just kept using addons.

Honestly, I think it’s just a lose-lose situation for Blizzard here, and the safer option (from their point of view) is to simply let it be.

You can scale things up:
Game Menu > System > Advanced > UI Scale
That does allow you to make the text bigger (or smaller), but it will also make everything else bigger at the same time. So, that may or may not be helpful.

Yeah that’s the problem, I want to scale only text by itself. Thanks though!

I found a handful of add-ons that let me scale up just the chat and quest log text separately, while keeping everything else sized so it doesn’t fill up my whole screen. It works but it means those are must haves for me to play without hurting my eyes. :frowning:

Really if Blizz did anything to the base UI, what I’d want to see is expansion of options more than an overhaul. More movement and scaling, more freedom in what parts of the UI scale or are tied to each other. They can keep the look and feel while providing more flexibility and accessibility at the same time.

I used to hate the default UI but the more I use it the more it’s not that bad. I like the look and feel since it matches the rest of the game so now I only use QOL addons that don’t modify how it looks but add features (e.g. not something like ElvUI which totally changes how it looks). I just find that not only does it match the feel of the game but it also means in a new patch/expansion I’m used to what is basically the default so I don’t have to wait for addons to be updated.

It could almost certainly be improved but they’ve added a lot of things to it over the years to where now other than a few minor things I don’t feel the need to have dozens of addons.

Personally, I think the default UI is poorly laid out. You can’t move most things or create a better layout with it. That is why I use Addons to create the UI that works for me. Others should do the same if they don’t like the default.

I use the default ui and a couple of add ons. I use Titan Panel to be able to see my gold and level of equipment damage at a glance and as a navigation tool when needed and Bagnon to make my bags one window instead of 5.

My point is that you don’t really need the action bars to be fancy. As long as they are mostly out of the way and still convey important information like cooldowns, it doesn’t matter what they look like.

I’d like to see a customization option in the menu where it will allow the player to move all ui elements around (don’t like the menu there, drag and place). And some scaling (grab a corner and move to shrink/enlarge).

They rely a lot on the addon community but that doesn’t mean those who don’t want addons shouldnt be allowed to tweak the ui just a tad to make it work better for them.

Same for FFXIV, which I’ve been playing the last 18 months. All UI elements can be repositioned, and many like the world map can be dragged around and resized at any time. It’s really jarring to come back here, and have the map covering half my screen.
One excellent feature they have as well is a flag feature, which plants a flag on your map (current zone), and posts a link to chat If any other player clicks it, it shows the zone with the flag and it’s location so they can quickly go to that spot. Everyone has access to it, not just those with tomtom or whatever.

They really need to allow more movement of ui elements.

Buffs and debuffs are in the WORST spot.

you should post his in the beta forums.

yes, the default UI is utter garbage. I also nope’ed out of beta until I could use at least the bare minimum of addons (btw, a few are working by now, bartender and details, as of yesteray. bartender making it at the bare minimum, playable)

It isn’t exactly good either…

I use deja character stats. Fixes the character sheet.

Hate the default one. Not enough information.

I use SUF because I’m blind as a bat and can’t see the default UI frames for tosh.

They could not change the default UI but give players the option of changing what they want. There is no downside to that since the default UI remains the same for everyone who likes it and is more customizable for people who just want to tweak.
