The Current State of RP-WPVP

There were RP-PvP players and guilds who would setup their own PvP raids, and would have best of 3 rounds verse a total of 40 people.

Everything was contained between the two guilds, so very little internal drama happened. The only time people would get mad is when the designated and not participating medics, who’d mass revive their sides.

This was in the Hinterlands a long time ago.

Amazing how events can be organized around different styles of gameplay.

One thing I have always wondered if why people choose WoW specifically for large scale PvP endeavors. GW2 has dedicated zones for it that are still fairly active and, imo, has better systems in place surrounding it. S’pose that isn’t as good if someone isn’t fond of the game’s lore, though. ESO also has a 3-way WvW area which has a fairly decent and easy story justification. Much lower barriers to entry in both of these options, too.

If I were to guess I would say that most people that do large scale PvP didn’t choose WoW specifically for that reason. I’m guessing that they chose to play WoW and at a later point decided to partake in large scale PvP.

RP PVP has a place, but is often done by those who forget many of the factors that are needed in place to prevent it from turning toxic. In a similar vein, often times there are many bad actors who use RP PVP as their scapegoat, which gives it an extremely bad reputation. Research, acts of good faith, respect, patience, the ability to learn and listen to those around you are integral when creating rp pvp on any scale.

As always, I’m game to come out of PvP retirement if there’s well-run, mature RP-PvP to be had. I came from a different server and while I have many horror stories to share, RP-PvP surprisingly wasn’t one of them. That said, I’m not going to invalidate people’s experiences with it on WrA. I’ve heard the stories and you all went through absolute hell.

If we come out, it’ll only be me and maybe five or so of my guildies at most, but we’re former OG PvPers and RBGers from a decade ago. One of us got the Vanilla title of Grand Marshal back when it was nearly impossible, to give an idea of how old school we are. (I only made it to Knight-Captain myself before I realized basically have to drop out of college to go further up the ranks.) Rust will need to buff off but we still have it.

Also, I’m also not a fan of the RP premise being outright Horde vs. Alliance, as that’s canonically outdated, but plots such as mercenaries, rogue groups, warring clans or nobles, etc. are good with me. I also prefer wide-open places like Hillsbrad or Barrens over cities so no one has the home team NPC guard advantage and we don’t disrupt people chilling and roleplaying in a place that should be safe from such incursions.

That said, I don’t suffer fools so if someone brings the muck and clogs things up, me and my kin are out. We just want to vibe and aren’t interested in the dark sides of RP-PvP, it’s drama, or its bad actors in the slightest. I just want to axe hug some friendly faces, share a beer, and go home.

Yeah, I assumed these guilds were already here and thought PvP might be fun and did so in the spirit of the faction conflict, a perpetual selling point of the series.

But I guess it’s also possible they’re all sitting in a darkened room somewhere, smoking cigars and sipping whiskey and chuckling over the next RP event they plan to ruin.

We’re making big moves, see? It’s thirsty work plotting the end of RP.

I don’t think most guilds (including the one that caused the latest round of “PvP is the devil” on the forums), intend to ruin RP events. There have for sure been malicious groups over the years but frankly, they never stay long on WrA because we bore them.

It’s just that ruining the RP event is what can happen, when you aren’t taking anyone else into consideration.

RP is the primary on this server. I’m not opposed to flagging up if someone shows up to SW or somewhere else. Not as motivated as I used to be admittedly, but I’m still motivated when I see we’re ‘under attack’.

Since there are no longer dedicated PvP or RP-PvP realms, nothing wrong with takling this out on the forums and trying to come to an understanding. Both sides should take the other into consideration, but I would personally ask the PvP team to understand that sometimes RP events can take a very long time to plan / organize. If you’re aiming for some attack on a city, maybe drop a word on the forum.

Aside from being considerate, maybe doing so would motivate some of us to show up and fight against you!

That said, someone pointed out in the other thread how it makes strategic sense to direct attack Org, a capital city, from a warring standpoint.

As someone who spent 20 years in the actual military, no. It does not make sense to HALO drop into the freaking VoH. That is not any kind of strategy other than something in a Hollywood movie.

If I was trying to take Stormwind, I would start with Redridge and Westfall, to soften the target and encourage rebellion from within. I would not SURPRISE YOLO into the Cathedral district.

I don’t deny it’s worth it to stand up to nefarious actors. But I’m wondering when the threshold for nefariousness dropped so low.

After you endure a bunch of recent stinkers, thresholds tend to drop to the floor before they recover.

I understand the sentiment, however at the same time as best I can tell this person has no prior history of anything like this and they came on here to openly apologize for it.

The reaction to that apology seems like the same type of behavior the mob is complaining about in this very thread. That is, people treating others poorly and being inconsiderate.

Yep. It was disproportionate to this crime.

I think also the perpetrators of the most recent RP-PvP screw up weaving in and out of this thread hasn’t helped. The previous incident had none of Jim’s owning of responsibility, open public apology, and moving on gracefully. It was more sock puppet sh*t posting to distract from devastating receipts that got posted, and this was short of two weeks ago.

However, because I’m neither Horde or PvP, I understood about half of it. The people who are understandably angry and prickly over it all were deeper in what happened than me. But I’m not going to undermine their experience in the slightest because even though I only understood half the history, what I did know wasn’t great and it still isn’t all that great.

I’m just here to vibe and help out WrA-A side if we get decent RP-PvP going — and by decent, I mean absolutely not the colossal poo show of two weeks ago. I hang in the Wyrmrest Community Project (WCP) Discord and can be DM’d by fellow A-side GMs who are interested in collaborating on that.

That said, our current characters/guild story is not themed towards the faction conflict or PvP right now and I don’t intend to change that because our current RP trajectory is awesome right where it is, so we’d likely play Jane/John Doe mercs to balance numbers.

Our guild has been known to show up to Alliance RP events, but never to attack them, it’s simply out of curiosity and intrigue. We just have a look and say “oh wow that’s cool. Lots of people” then we quickly depart back to wherever we can find battles against players who are more interested in fighting us. We host many of our own heavy RP events and know exactly the kind of work that gets put into them and wouldn’t allow for any participation in PVP to negatively impact that work or any players immersion as much as we possibly can.

Wasn’t it your guild that called in the raid that attacked the Guild Faire?

He stands accused!

How will he plead?

No one was attacking the Guild Faire, sir. That entire fight happened in the tunnel near by and in the valley away from where that was happening. Just because it happened nearby and at the same time does not mean it had anything to do with us desiring for an RP event to be attacked.

Amd how will the prosecution respond?

Will he present to the court damning evidence?

I have the whole thing recorded… None of it had to do with the Guild Faire…
