The Bodyguard System

I know some of you hate bodyguards and if you do please explain what it is you don’t like about it. I think it’s clear Blizzard is aiming to continue working on their AI. So I feel a baselined bodyguard feature is probably around the corner.

If Blizzard does go this route…

  • what would you like to see?
  • what do you want them to improve?

Would you like to see a permanent system put into place where you can choose & gear up your bodyguard? Would you rather…

  • Give them hand me down armor/weapons?
  • Collect specific weapons and armor created for a bodyguard?

Now for those that played in WoD, how would you feel about the way of choosing/recruiting was similar to how the inn mercenary followed worked? Rotating weekly with different mercenaries? Would you rather it wasn’t random at all and instead based on questing and recruitment? Or maybe have both instances of questing for bodyguards and inn recruitment?

What critical complaints/issues do you have with the current system?

First and foremost, a <Let’s proceed quietly.> option to disable their repetitive voice lines.

Disable them in PVP is my biggest complaint.

When I’m healing in Zerg vs Zerg, I inevitably get a bajillion freaking pets and bodyguards on me. It’s the most obnoxious thing in the world.

I like them, at higher rank. They do more damage.

Id like them to shut up more.

Id like the ability to use abilities manually like a pet, but that might not be possible because of hunters and warlocks.

I would like to be able to give them equipment like we do in Diablo 3.

Would also like to be able to set their stance, similar to a Warlock’s or Hunter’s pet. That way they don’t charge off into the wilderness, die and then we get steamrolled by a train of mobs.

I don’t mind their chatter, so i wouldn’t change anything there.

no

bodyguards are obnoxious and annoying.
they get in combat with things I was going to walk past
they stay in combat
they pull me out of stealth
they make shadowmeld useless
they never. shut. up.
they’re like needy toddlers in a china shop.

I simply do not like, or even remotely need, them. they’re a nuisance.

Would you be against it if they worked like the Legion setting of them being gone while not in combat.

I would have 0 objections to them if I could make them go away and basically steal an ability from them.

Like Lonely Winter? Yeah. That sounds like a good trade off for folks that dislike the system.

I liked the Legion concepts where you were able to choose the type of body guard you took with you. Like company? Take Rexxar. Just want to see him every once in a while? Take Hemit. Just want an extra attack when you’re desparate? Take Emmeril (sp?).

I also liked to be able to pick equipment for them that would help my toon. Resources or AP or gold etc.

I’d like to see the Bodyguard Miniaturization Device from WoD activated for all expansions. Even though the giblins are small, they and they’re mounts get in the way.

Don’t hate bodyguards but they uhhh…do not jive well with stealth classes. During Legion I stuck with Lord Ravenholdt most of the expansion.

No, absolutely 100% NO. I didn’t really mind it in Diablo 3 but in SWTOR this felt god awful. Sometimes I just want to sell/disenchant stuff, not have to hold on to it in case my buddy could use it.

If they WERE going to set up a bodyguard system I’d want it to not impact the gameplay if you opted to NOT bring one along.

Instead of having a huge roster of nameless NPCs to choose from (a la WoD) I would prefer a smaller pool of more easily recognizable bodyguards, sort of like Legion’s system. (class based would be preferable)

Bodyguard quest chains could be cool. SWTOR had this, it was pretty cool, sometimes they were well written. A lot of times it was just Bioware’s shoehorned romance options though, barf.

I want a feature where my bodyguard picks me up in their arms and carries me through a crowd of enemies, kicking them in the face as Whitney Houston sings in the background.

Doesn’t sound like you want a bodyguard, it sounds like you want a drinking buddy. :beers:

Id like to see this as well, but it may become confusing with PvP. Though I agree with a previous poster in that they should probably be disabled in PvP.

As a hunter I was rather indifferent to bodyguards, but as a discipline priest I am very glad to have them for the extra DPS.

I should add I also preferred legion’s system for leveling bodyguards over both WoD and BFA. In WoD if you used a follower as a bg, they received no experience- they could only level through the mission table. In BFA you have to do special quests to level them.

Legion they just leveled with you Or through the table. Way better.

Agreed. Made a lot of sense that they would gain XP as they accompanied you.

If you had a suggestion on how they could improve the system, what would it be?

Everything this person said and the one above them about the PvP situations, it’s absolutely terrible to see 30+ “scouts” on you during a huge PvP brawl.

Since I run around the world in tank spec, it’s nice to have them for that extra DPS. This iteration at least. The Legion ones never felt like they did any real damage, so I just used ones with an active ability to get their equipment bonuses and ignore their existence.

If they go forward with something like this, being able to build your bodyguard in a way that suits your playstyle would be great. May as well just remove group content though at that point, though.

I like them for quests that recommends 3 people .

I can usually take those quest bosses down solo with my pet and a follower.
