The devs stated in the Blue Tracker that the experimental layering would be disabled if it was impacting the game negatively. Well, it’s extremely negative in so many ways…get rid of this crap please Blizzard.
Here is the blue post: WoW Classic Era - PvP Realm Layer Behavior Change

If they don’t have layering how would having this many people on a single server work with mob tags and leveling?
Nobody is complaining about layering. The problem we have is the hidden “sub-layer” shards that they implemented on a zone. For instance, there can be 3 world layers, but then there’s 7 copies of Hinterlands zone. They then force people to spread across the sub-layers evenly.
This just happened to me about an hour ago. I got layered away from the group I was in for questing, and was forced to find another group. Even though we were on the same layer.
Yeah it has nothing to do with how the original layer system worked just fine it’s the new test they are using that sucks

please read the thread before posting anniversary realms use a new experimental version of layering/sharding that is dumb.
I don’t know what planet you’ve been on, but it hasn’t been Azeroth.
Every single zone I’ve been in and tried to do a single quest on, there are so many people and so much competition for quest kills, resources, and whatnots that it takes 3-5 times as long to complete quests that would normally take a LOT less time! Groups are competing with groups. Every layer has had a massive amount of people.
So again, I don’t know what planet you’re on, but it’s not on Classic Fresh Azeroth if you’re complaining about “empty zones”.
Edit: Maybe this is a lot different for Nightslayer and Doomhowl servers. The layering on Dreamscythe though is excruciating.

As much as I want to play Anniversary, I may delve back into Classic Era because of this. We’ll see…

It wasn’t that many years ago that the guy stood up on the stage at Blizzcon and told everyone they don’t really want classic. There’s always disagreement from devs on what the players want.

You have a healthy number of servers instead of these ridiculous megaservers. If there were a couple more servers and got rid of layering it would be soo much better.

Yeah, I have quite a few buddies in game that have done the same since blizzard has so well dodged the question of “Can we move to Era after” and if I cant then for me there is no point to play the new servers if the characters are lost to TBC in full.
I wanted to do WSG for FRESH but with the insane amount of gold buyers and already the cheating I have seen take place, ill just wait on Era to pop off again since it always does.
Right now is a good time to level new characters on Era because the community is chill as always but there is less competition now in world for mobs making the whole thing far easier than normal.
I love being in a group and watching my layer switch 3 times without me even moving

nobody is saying layers are empty
the issue is constant layer switching based on zones
This right here.
I can get about 2-3 quests done in the time I have to play. I am 40 and do not see 60 anytime in the near future.
In a way its slowing the pace down to get to max level, but then its an increased pace for content. Seems backwards.
Time will tell I guess.

i have no idea what you’re on about as my experience has been consistently overpopulated, competing for every resource and full deadmines groups still going strong on anniversary realms
