OP said warrior was not the tank, just a DPS. fair game.
You don’t need a shield with block on it, you aren’t tanking.
Shaman healers use shields with INT or mp5 or +Healing and ONLY those types of shields, its actual armor and block mean ZERO to you.
So yeah, its a tanking shield, and you are absolutely in the wrong.
An upgrade is an upgrade, if the tank wasn’t tanking with a shield, its up for grabs. He was just butthurt he lost. Congrats on the shield lol
Well first thing looks like that shield has +block on it so yeah it’s technically a tank weapon. Second thing though in your situation it’s not a big deal. That’s a leveling item and if the tank didn’t want it and the DPS warrior didn’t want it, and of course it’s an upgrade for you there is zero problem. I wouldn’t have cared one bit.
This is an MS vs OS debate. The shield is clearly an MS tank shield. If the tank wants it the tank gets it. Your spec is what role you are filling at the time of the drop.
A shield is going to be an OS item for a DPS char. You have equal claim as a shamy/pally as a dps warrior would.
I wouldn’t even want that shield as a shaman healer.
It’s offspec vs offspec. Shamans can even use that shield to tank lower level dungeons. Fair game.
if the warrior was tanking then he’d have a case. He was offspec and that means if he wants to roll on tank gear so badly, show up and tank next time
That shield is def. a tank item dude.
EDIT: if the warrior wanted the shield, he should have said he will roll on tank gear for his tanking set. He might not have felt the need to say this, as the “cookie-cutter” Warrior path is to level as Arms and keep a 1h+shield handy for tanking, so you can run dungeons as Tank or DPS, but hey, it’s not your job to know his spec.
On my server/in my guild we generally just go by “if it’s an upgrade that you will use, roll need”. By this definition, this item is fine for you to roll on.
However, a bit more nuanced understanding of loot rolls is that you are expected to roll on items helpful to the role you are playing in the dungeon (unless otherwise stated - for example, I tank dungeons and tell the group that I’m Arms and will roll on 2h weapons).
By this logic, if you’re in the dungeon as a healer, the Commander’s Crest has more stats that benefit the tanking role than the healer role.
Personally, I understand that we’re all leveling and healers can’t just spam dungeons until 60, they need to be able to quest and grind as well - I wouldn’t have been upset at you rolling on the shield, as you use them.
However, I can understand that the tank would have been upset, because they would have felt like the itemization on it is better for tanks than healers (strength rather than intellect).
What was the loot rules before entering? If none were stated, then its use the mechanics blizzard provided.
There’s no ‘this item is for this,’ or ‘that item is for that’. Its just whatever the system lets you get. Unless the group sets a loot priority beforehand. Which alot of crappy group leaders do.
For every bad tank, bad healer, and bad DPS, there’s a dozen bad group leaders. There’s a little more to leading a group than inviting four people. If you all don’t have any intent on leading a group pass the initial group invitations, pass lead to someone.
If I had been tanking I probably would have been irked but no more than when I lose rolls to dps plate wearers. But I would not have complained – if you wear a shield you have every right to roll on them (much more so, I would argue, than the plate dps’ers who are not wearing a shield in the run).
Also, by the way, the shield dropped by Tinkerer Gizlock (Gizlock’s Hypertech Buckler, +10 intellect, +5 stam, +4mp5) was a big upgrade for me as a protection warrior due to the armor and block value. So I hope you don’t mind if we warriors roll on that.
I had a similar situation, but I am a dps (Enhancement) Shaman rolling with 1 hander and shield as tanks don’t hold agro like they used to. The warrior tank was beside himself that I needed on this as it was a good upgrade for my melee caster in terms of keeping him survivable as well as adding what was at the time the biggest bonus to Spirit of any of my items. My attitude is it was a solid upgrade, I get it is an upgrade for warrior tanks but it’s also great upgrade for any melee hybrid like shamans (enhancement) or paladins. I get annoyed when my class just gets automatically dismissed when it comes to item rolls like this, basically if you are a leather wearing shaman the tanks don’t want you roll on shields, leather wearing healers don’t want you to roll on leather with Int, rogues and hunters get upset if you roll on leather with Agi, and everyone thinks that one hander is better served with a warrior if it has strength or the hunter/rogue if it has Agi. I’m guessing some folks are going to say just go 2Hander, but that’s not my current situation.
Why would you roll on a shield with no healing stats as a healer?
I’d be mad too.
then he should have BEEN the tank, and not DPSing. For all we know they are not a tank and going to AH it.
if the shield had more spirit and/or stamina along with a big increase in armor then i don’t see it as a “tank” only shield for a DPS to claim. The tank of the party - absolutely. Not someone who claims to be or a armchair tank.
healers need 2 of the 3 stats in a big way, shammies use one hander and shield.
DPS warriors do not use shields.
IF only the two of you wanted it then both need would be my vote.
if the tank needed a shield upgrade then maybe precedence to him ?
that’s a long post for basically, I wanted an item but someone else got it or was unhappy i got it
If you NEED it… roll NEED and who cares what the rogues think
You gucci man. If the tank didn’t need the tank gear, then it’s up for grabs for anyone that can:
- use/wield it
- replace worse gear with the drop
And if no one claims it by that point, then it should just be greed rolled and winner gets to vendor/AH it
A couple of thoughts:
- It’s SFK, don’t over think it.
- The shield should’ve gone to the Warrior, it’s really a no brainer. He’s the one who can make the biggest use out of it. As far as I understand, vanilla Shamans should always level 2H and that shield is useless as a healing item.
