Depends on the mog, the theme, and the competition.
I got a consolation prize for “Everyday Heroes” despite everyone else dressing up in their “Sunday Finest” while I dressed down (in my current mog).
I did win Faction Pride though. So that kind of offset the loss.
Everyday Heroes has been the hardest category for me.
I finally really got it right last year, I guess, on my warrior as a sailor, to great praise from the group. Felt great.
Made a really meh one w my cooking utensil weapons last night on one of my monks. 
Too many simps in trial of style. Naked draino waggle or dh always wins. 
I like to imagine the people that win by just applying a full set that looks cool are sitting there drooling, clapping, real happy.
My priest has been getting 1st place every time for Champions of the
Light. It’s comical. With vestments of blind absolution. It’s one of my favorite sets in game
There there, lass. The results are sometimes unpredictable. For example, when I was still a male night elf, I won first place for a joke mog that looked like it belonged in someone’s S&M dungeon. I don’t even remember the category. Imagine me trying that now.

A lot of people vote for the mog they consider worse so their chances are better, is that morally grey?

I won 1st again last night in this outfit in a group where there were 3 people from another guild. Sometimes the system isn’t rigged, it’s just that you were not creative or transformative.
Some players vote for the worst to assumingly boost their odds. I always vote for what I personally like, and I prefer an interesting mix and match over a standard set. I haven’t bothered this round. Did they load more mogs for currency in the trial?
