I killed some random Hunter in a Wintergrasp who was running in one of those premades ( lol ) on my HPriest 1v1. Was quite comical since he chased me across the map to the outskirts to die
The game is supposed to be balanced around arena 3s.
However, even in arenas, I think most players don’t want tank specs to be viable. It’s not fun fighting against “Ha ha. You can’t kill me, but I can kill you.”
IMO, tanks should be limited to CTF maps (and maybe ToK) and epic bgs.

they take a much higher factor of damage than anyone else, i thinks its 50%? more damage-- something like that, and deal low damage.
Yeah, you can see the massive outcry when they aren’t weak. Most people don’t want to fight against tanks.
Tanks are designed to survive PvE raid bosses. Their design doesn’t translate well to PvP where people are supposed to die.

I think so too, with a couple exceptions (though maybe this ties into your specifying a “pure DPS”:
- certain DPS specced specifically for 1v1 survivability/sustain/self heals
- the DPS is able to escape (isn’t held hostage)
If none of the above the tank spec should be able to kill the DPS, or at least keep them isolated for a while…
Should add I don’t think this is healthy for PvP. I think a tank vs. any-spec DPS should be a draw where neither can kill the other. Unless one is AFK. lol

Sometimes, you should not attempt to kill a tank. For example, when I play my tank char in a map like Deepwind Gorge, I always ask my teammates not to assist me at my node. The more opponents attempt to kill me, the merrier. I remember in a Deepwind Gorge where four players vs me at the market node. Because a hunter kept breaking cc on me, neither team managed to cap the market node throughout the entire game, but my team successfully got nearly everything else. They should just use 1 dps to deal with me.

Depends on what the tank is. I can personally wear down some specs. But something like guardian…forget it.
i think this is an outdated philosophy guarded by ego. its actually quite the opposite. tanks are very much killable in arena, whereas their kill potential is extremely low (a tank will never just “randomly” kill you, whereas things like ret/war/dh won’t even need cc just a crit and the game is over); the problem stems from players not understanding this, then adjusting their playstyle unknowingly in the tanks favor. i think also part of the problem is players are too deep into watching addons and cooldowns that when there is nothing to be “traded” (as most tanks don’t have something as clear as combustion) they panic and just start using buttons that will lead to their demise.
i also think its wrong to alienate any spec from any content. i played a healer in BFA that couldn’t solo visions and it was probably the worst feeling in the world. at the end of the day its a game and 99.9% of us aren’t playing it for a living or truly at a competitive level, you should be able to play w/e u want. i think the more people learn about tanks the less opposed to them in arena they’ll be; i don’t feel all that different from a sub rogue i spend most the game setting up cc and controlling LoS (smoke bomb / ranged kiting enemies behind pillars)… and i am very much killable by players who understand how my spec works, just like any other spec.
i think that considering only 1 spec can do this, its not a severe problem. its like wanting to remove cyclone + rootbeam from boomy , or gouge cheap shot blind from rogue; its just part of what that spec is.
tbh its more insane that even with this when i use it to peel like dh/warrior off my teammates, its almost never works. can u imagine melee specs with so much mobility that perma Walking Dead grip + icey chains isn’t enough to get them off their target
its only particularly good into a few things hunter/priest/monk just like rootbeam isn’t good into gnomes, gouge/blind can be death’d by priests or dodged/immuned by dhs or monks.
if your dps spec doesn’t have healing, it would die to 1 UA. i don’t think all dps specs should have healing, and therefore they should not be able to draw any duel. some specs just aren’t meant to 1v1, which is a good thing because class homogenization is really sad and boring.
Unfortunately, Blizzard doesn’t design specs around PvP and they don’t balance specs differently for the different PvP brackets. So, specs are de facto alienated from PvP content. An example would be the various tank specs that are unwanted in rated bgs.
IMO, the PvE tank design doesn’t translate well to PvP in general. IMO, their PvE role/fantasy only works in certain PvP situations, e.g. carrying a flag or tanking the NPC boss in an epic bg.

non tanks in current wow are tankier than tanks, hit 200% harder than tanks, and self heal more than tanks.
I said it before and ill say it again, you can take a mage and warlock and tank raids-- guaranteed.
correct-- bears are the only tank that isnt neutered in pvp.
all the other tanks are severely nerfed in arena.
IMO – a tank in arena SHOULD be very hard to kill ( IE not take the extra % damage nerf they have been given_, but on the flipside, they should do very little meaningful dps.
Also-- tanks should be able to taunt a player off another player-- just like Warhammer online.
Conversely-- dps in WoW shouldnt have heals at all-- period. thats what your healer is for.
the trifecta of healer- dps- tank should be alive and well in pvp, yet it really isnt.
Most of the dps specs in WoW dont need a healer at all, as they heal too well
IE
mages/locks
rogues have a fast cd heal and they can reset and they can keep you ccd-- just like mages.
what do tanks have in WoW?
nothing, unless you play bear.
if you are a tank in arena and not a bear-- you are a non factor.
Good Post. I was in the middle of a great conversation about Tanks in PvP last week and every time that I see a good discussion that doesn’t devolve into a “No Tonks in mah PvP” it is usually close to the same arguments. If it is this obvious to the community, it has to be obvious to the developers.
A coordinated group can make a lot of tank specs work if you play around their strengths. Obviously not all Tanks are equal as FC’s but that doesn’t mean they are neutered (except for Prot Pallies RIP). It does require extra effort. You will not find that effort in a PUG environment so it is a very restrictive barrier of entry.
Yes there are exceptions to the rule (except Prot Pallies RIP).
A tank should be hard to kill but that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be able to kill anyone. The longer a fight lasts should favor the tank. If proper defensive and CC can negate a DPS’s goes then the DPS should feel some punishment if they did not set it up properly. There are healers just as hard to kill as some tanks.
Sadly the game mechanics aren’t in place to make that work. People complain about CC now and the “lack of ability to play their character”. Just think about the frustration it would cause when a player cannot control who they are targeting. Right now the best thing that we have is the transference of damage from a teammate to the tank.
Today’s PvE encounters are the blame. Some classes (Hunters) are left of the bench for a lot of raid encounters because they could not handle the incoming rot damage from fights and it was too taxing on healers. Let’s face it, PvE is the vast majority of their playerbase. Right or Wrong, it is their design philosophy and they have to address it as such.
