Imagine coming in here complaining that the way you’re playing is failing, and someone saying its because you gotta play it this way to get the desired result and saying that is an elitist attitude.
Blizzard seemed to consider higher tank threat earlier on since Warlocks and Shaman actually had 100% increased threat modifiers at the Blizzcon reveal that were nerfed to 50% later on. It looks like Devastate may have originally done twice as much damage as well. Druids it looks like they just expected their threat to suck from the start I guess?
Ahhhh so here is your problem, you shouldnt be using thunderclap but once for the debuff. Devastate should be your main ability, Thunder Clap is cheeks
That’s just it, it isn’t efficient at all to demand everyone pump the brakes so hard on DPS just so your Healer ends the pull at 95% mana instead of 85%.
And Tanks do mitigate by having passively higher defenses than a Mage, so design intent achieved. Just because you want to play the game slowly, obeying but never perfecting or improving upon the most basic of fundamentals, does not mean everyone else is at your pace (or wants to be).
People enjoy speed, power, flourish, and efficiency. You don’t get that marking targets, CCing a few, pulling one mob at a time, and drinking to full every time. You’ve always been able to go faster, so do so.
Or be the WNBA of Tanking and watch as everyone finds someone else for their run.
That’s only because the consequences of death is permanent, so they give themselves a wide berth on scary situations, keep it slow, and never rush. The go-go-go speed running seen in Classic Naxx frequently saw perfect runs with zero deaths of any kind, and that’s with Tanks wearing the minimum amount of defensive gear possible.
Play better.
im telling you… its NOT slow because you never need to drink…
and they stacked every world buff and consumable in the game to compensate for their lowered mitigation
For BFD: I just “tank” trash in cat form and then let someone else tank the bosses since everyone is a tank now lol. I feel more in danger running stockades than I do in most of BFD.
For everything else: My tanking consists of kind of grouping things up and taunting off the healer if needed. Everyone else can just kill/tank whatever they want, because nothing I say is going to change anything. DPS gonna do DPS things.
Guess what I’m saying is don’t worry about threat right now. There’s really no need. If it’s still all busted at 60 then people have cause for concern.
i wonder if DPS and healers would be fine if their DPS and Heals didnt work. Thats kinda what everyone in this thread is saying. Sure tanking isnt great but just play some other way then! no reason to improve the game! SoD is a completely finished game! YEA!
It is slow, because in favor of single targeting everything to death behind your piss-poor TPS, your pull takes 2-3x as long and the Healer is still having to toss you healing, on one pack.
Meanwhile the speed group is on their third pull already and will drink after the 4th pull because everyone will be OOM then.
…and?
Consumables exist, use them.
Are you going to be upset to find out they sought out and wore the most stat-efficient and powerful gear as well rather than just mindlessly wear 8/8 tier gear?
We’ll have so many more juiced up talents, passives, and runes, plus the GEAR to actually fuel it, I doubt we’ll have issues.
Tanking is about control, first and foremost. At this level, control means no death and no Healer panic.
You’re Tanking if you can grab a boss and an add while your DPS blow up the rest of the pack, because without you everyone would be much more exposed, likely to die or just outright die, and the Healer would OOM before long.
Going into deep prot as pally is nice and all but that limits your ability to gain aggro in multiple mobs without consecration. They shouldve just put avengers shield on a 10 second cd. If you dont go excorism rune, the lack of skills you have that does do dmg is terrible.
I think they should remove the rage cost of mangle bear and add to the mangle rune that swipe applies rake. Make Furious Thunder remove the rage cost of Thunder Clap. They should also go back to the original design of seal of martyrdom probably so prot can have AoE damage without specing holy.
Except it’s not a suggestion when player base, by and large, have silently agreed to play this way by, y’know, just playing this way. Instead, you and OP are throwing a a fit about the “meta zoomer mentality”(like metagaming and optimization are anything resembling new) instead of recognizing how a mass multiplayer online role-playing game, at the end of the day, is going to be driven forward by how the masses decide to play.
And while WoW wasn’t originally designed with the intent of tanks doing massive damage or completely forsaking damage in favor of pure mitigation and threat, a lot of competition at the time widely had classes where you are essentially COMPLETELY useless in ANY content because you could take hits or heal, but did so little damage you wouldn’t kill anything solo for days, or you could deal damage, but you’re going to get insta-stomped by most anything. Regardless of what the designed intent was, it laid the groundwork for the possibility of generating threat through high damage, and forsaking mitigation when got to the point of ensuring survival without it.
This isn’t the fault of the devs. This isn’t the fault of any individual players, or even a group of “sweaty tryhard meta goblins.” This is the result of people playing one version of a game for the better part of two decades (be it on official servers or not-so-official) and solving every mathematical riddle the game could ever offer. Hell, I experienced this as a warrior early as TBC in 2007, swapping out pieces of tank gear for more TPS and DPS during SSC when I was sitting pretty on T5. I REALLY experienced forsaking tank gear for DPS gear to get through ZA before the timer for the bear mount. (The game was nowhere near as solved, but people still understood “more TPS = DPS can pump harder, if tank can survive while DPS pump harder we can make the timer easier.”
I’m going to emphasize that I’m not, in any way or fashion, saying “git gud.” I am saying that the play style you want is not a play style that exists in this game anymore. Hell, most old play styles don’t exist in a lot of MMOs that have run for 20+ years and are still running. If you want to play WoW slowed down that much, you’re either:
- Asking Blizzard to completely rework threat so tanks have coefficients so obscene that it’s a non-issue, while also making enemies hit so hard you have to stack massive amounts of mitigation gear to have any mob essentially one-shot any non-tank - i.e. DPS just has to not body pull or stand in bad and gg ez, or
- Asking the player base to play in your preferred fashion, putting you not just before the other 4, 9, 19, 39 people in your group, but putting you as the only one whose enjoyment matters.
Either way, these sound more like “demands” than “suggestions,” and it sounds like you telling others to “just accept your way and play the way you want.”
(…And I just realized this is post #18 in a topic with 352 posts. Hopefully this isn’t a troll post that I’m feeding into.)
It’s possible, but yeah it’s not buttery smooth at the moment. I’m not saying there aren’t issues, but I view it as more of a temporary annoyance rather than something that needs adjustment. Rage based tanks don’t really come into their own until later on when we generate more rage.
That and at level 25 I think expecting all mobs to stick to me is more of an ego thing, and not a group requirement. It’s just not super realistic to expect perfect AOE tanking at this point in the game, at least for bears and warriors. Single target threat seems to be fine.
So yeah, I’d love to have more rage, and maybe a scalable swipe that doesn’t suck, so I can sit in bear form and tank it all right now. It’s annoying that I can’t. But it is what it is, and it was expected. The only real answer is to DPS for the time being and see how it turns out. And if history repeats itself, warrior tanks aren’t going to be deep prot, and won’t be wearing defense gear, and bears will be wearing a bunch of agi gear and using the new MCP just to try and keep up with the DPS.
