Take actions against tanks and healers charging to tank dungeons

Let’s talk about a behavior that has been creeping more and more into group content, especially in LFG.

Players charging gold or demanding dungeon mats (herbs, blues, greens to DE, etc.) just to play the role they chose. (ALWAYS a tank or healer.)

I am not talking about organized boosting, advertised carries, or clearly defined services. I am talking about everyday dungeon runs where someone says:

“I will tank, but I get **ALL** Unwanted mats (blues/greens/herbs)”
  • “I will heal, but you pay me X gold.”

  • “I get all unwanted blues and greens because I am the tank.”

  • “If you want a tank, you pay a fee.”

This is not “smart gameplay.” It is not “fair compensation.” It is toxic behavior that undermines the core of what an MMO is supposed to be.

I want to break down exactly why.

  1. Roles are part of the game design, not a personal toll booth

Tanks, healers, and DPS are not side hustles. They are core parts of the game’s design.

  • You chose to roll a tank.

  • You chose to roll a healer.

  • You chose to join LFG content.

The game is balanced around the idea that players fill these roles to complete content together. When someone says “I will only tank if you pay me” or “I get all the mats because I am the healer,” they are not just negotiating. They are turning a required role into a toll booth.

That is not cooperation. That is exploitation of scarcity.

  1. Payment in mats” is still payment

Some people try to soften it by saying:

  • “I am not charging gold, I just want all the herbs.”

  • “I am not charging a fee, I just get all the blues and greens to DE.”

That is still payment. It is just a different currency.

If you are demanding:

  • all herbs

  • all unwanted blue and green items

  • all DE materials

in exchange for simply doing the role you chose to play, you are not “just playing the game.” You are taxing the group.

You are effectively saying:

”You can only run this dungeon with me if you pay a loot tax.”

That is not normal loot distribution. That is not “need before greed.” That is a private tax on group content.

  1. It creates a hostile and predatory group environment

This behavior has real effects on the social environment:

  • New players feel pressured to accept unfair terms because they “need a tank.”

  • Casual players feel like they must pay to access basic content.

  • People who refuse to pay are insulted, kicked, or blacklisted.

  • The entire tone of the run shifts from “team effort” to “transaction.”

Instead of:

  • “We are a group clearing a dungeon.”

It becomes:

  • “We are customers paying a role vendor.”

That is not what an MMO should feel like.

  1. It is not the same as organized boosting

Some people will say:

“Boosting exists. Why is this any different?”

Boosting is usually:

  • clearly advertised

  • clearly transactional

  • often done for leveling players

  • understood by everyone as a paid service

What we are talking about here is different:

  • Normal dungeon runs

  • Normal players

  • Normal content

  • One person holding the group hostage because they play a required role

This is not a “carry.” This is not a “boost.” This is a player trying to monetize their basic participation in standard content.

  1. It undermines the cooperative spirit of WoW

WoW is built on:

  • shared roles

  • shared loot

  • shared goals

When one role starts demanding payment just to participate, it breaks that foundation.

Imagine if:

  • DPS started charging per pull.

  • Healers demanded a cut of every BoE.

  • Crafters demanded a tax on every drop that could be disenchanted.

Everyone would call that toxic. Tanks and healers doing it should not be treated differently just because their role is in higher demand.

  1. Why Blizzard should care

Blizzard has already taken stances on:

  • disruptive gameplay

  • scamming

  • predatory behavior

  • abusive or exploitative group conduct

Charging people to simply fill the role you chose in normal group content fits into that “disruptive and predatory” category.

Blizzard could easily:

  • classify this under “disruptive gameplay” or “predatory player behavior”

  • add clarity in the Code of Conduct about monetizing basic roles in standard content

  • encourage fair loot rules and discourage “role taxes”

Even if Blizzard does not outright ban it, a clear statement that this behavior is not supported would go a long way.

  1. What a healthy alternative looks like

Healthy group behavior looks like:

  • Everyone rolls on mats according to agreed rules. (MS/OS Need/greed)

  • If someone wants specific mats, they ask, not demand. (shared looting highest roll goes first)

There is a big difference between:

  • “Hey, if you do not mind, I would love to take the herbs this run.”

  • “I will only tank if I get all the herbs/mining node and unwanted greens/blues.”

One is a request. The other is a shakedown.

  1. My position

Charging people gold or dungeon mats just to play the role you chose in normal group content is toxic behavior.

It:

  • exploits role scarcity

  • turns teamwork into a transaction

  • pressures newer and casual players

  • undermines the cooperative spirit of the game

I believe Blizzard should:

  • recognize this as disruptive and predatory behavior

  • clarify their stance in the Code of Conduct

  • encourage fair, transparent loot and role expectations

taking actions against players who do this type of behavior ban/suspend

9. Open question to the community

  • 1. Have you run into tanks or healers demanding payment or mats just to join a dungeon?

  • 2.Did you feel pressured to accept because you “needed the role”?

  • 3.Do you think Blizzard should address this directly?

I am genuinely curious where the community stands on this, because as this becomes more normalized, it makes group content more hostile, more transactional, and less fun for everyone who is not trying to turn their role into a toll booth.

I’ve never understood why anybody would accept, enable, and even encourage a healer to charge for services. Just don’t take them.

This is AI, but I agree.

Imagine being a dps crying because tanks wanna sell a service.

Just swipe and Boost a class which can tank and tank yourself, the Main problem about tank shortage is not because tanks are trash people, it is because dps are trash people that want other people tank for them for free so dps can get their items, when most of them can tank.

Rets, fury, arms, balance Specs, why are they not tanking dungeons?

sad to say this but just let the community cook itself. It’s not just tanks n healers that HR herbs/blues/greens etc.
Many dps have tried to get me to tank when things are HR to them and then 30 mins later, they disband and complain there’s a tank shortage.
There is no solution or fix blizzard can implement to a problem the community created not by game design, but by toxic behaviour.

OH NO! Tanks and healers DARE to abuse those poor, brainless, inept dps players by charging them for their services!

I, for one, shall do something about it! I shall go online RIGHT NOW and ask them to charge more!

See, little dps’ers, some of us are done with your sh*t–we don’t owe you anything. Not happy about it? Roll a tank or a healer and make yourselves useful for a change. If not, you’re welcome to stay in the lfg list of shame with the rest of the mouth breathers.

How else are you going to encourage tanks and healers who no longer need your 5 man content to run at your demand? All i see is a complaint about the current community without even an attempt at finding a solution you yourself would be happy with if you were in their position.

The “solutions” have been posted over and over. It’s just that no one over at Blizzard gives a hoot. And us players are to hooked to this crack to MAKE them care.

If everyone canceled their sub and then listed the VARIOUS terrible issues with TBC as the reason why, things would get fixed in weeks. But people (myself included) are in such need of a MMO that we put up with the Walmart of MMO’s.

by not treating them like trash would be a great start!

That’s a whole long post yet the solution completely eluded you.

  1. Just don’t group with those people.

Problem solved.

No.
The main problem is self-entitled tanks who think their role entitles them to payment for basic content.

DPS do not “want tanks for free.”
They want tanks who understand that:

  • dungeons are group content

  • roles exist to balance the game

  • participation is not a paid service

  • loot is shared, not taxed

If you want to get paid, go do dailies.
If you want to tank a normal dungeon, you are not owed a paycheck.

Saying “there is no solution Blizzard can implement because the community created the problem” is just a way of pretending Blizzard has no responsibility for the environment their game systems create.

Player behavior does not exist in a vacuum.
It exists inside the rules, incentives, and systems Blizzard designs.

If toxic behavior becomes widespread, that means the system is allowing, rewarding, or failing to discourage it.

Blizzard has stepped in on community‑created problems before:

  • ninja looting

  • GDKP scams

  • griefing in world PvP

  • boosting spam

  • griefing in LFD

  • griefing in RDF

  • loot trading abuse

All of those were “community problems,” and Blizzard still intervened because the behavior damaged the game experience.

So the idea that Blizzard “can’t fix it” is simply not true.

I just don’t join those groups, easy peasy.

BUT:

Tank role is the most stressful. Healer not up to par? Your fault. Not pulling fast enough? Your fault. Too slow? Your fault. DPS smashing crits before you even touch the thing? Your fault.

Now, a seasoned person will tell any of these people to blow smoke, but just dealing with them alone is annoying and draining. Most tanks will just run with friends (or not at all) so they don’t have to deal with this.

Healer is also up there because if you get an undergeared tank you’re blowing mana just to make up for it. DPS are being stupid and a healer may blow mana to try to keep them alive.

Again, seasoned healers will tell them to just eat it, but its still annoying to deal with.

Dungeons have been the least fun in Anniversary and I just frankly don’t do them if I’m not in a guild/friend group.

Not if you play a prot pally, then it’s the most brainless.

Most stressful in 5-mans is hpal.

When someone opens with mockery instead of an argument, it usually means they don’t have a real point. All you’re doing here is proving exactly why people call this behavior toxic. You’re not defending tanking. You’re defending being hostile to anyone who isn’t you.

If your entire argument is:

  • mock DPS

  • insult players

  • demand payment

  • break ToS

  • pretend normal tanking is a paid service

Then you’re not defending tanking.
You’re defending being toxic.

And that’s exactly why people want Blizzard to address this behavior.

they did, they banned tanks selling tank services and now there’s none left lol.

stop ripping threat off tanks and they will stop charging you.
The behaviour will become addressed when the community’s behaviour towards tanks does.

That would be true if Blizzard actually stuck to the ban.
But they didn’t.

Blizzard originally did crack down on paid tanking and healing services.
Then streamers made videos, flooded dev DMs, and complained on social media.
And Blizzard quietly walked it back.

So let’s be accurate:

  • Blizzard banned it

  • Streamers cried

  • Blizzard reversed it

  • Paid tanking came right back

There was never a “tank extinction.”
There was a temporary pause followed by a full return to business as usual.

And now tanks and healers are not only selling runs for gold again, they’ve expanded into workarounds:

  • demanding all herbs

  • demanding all mining nodes

  • demanding every un-needed blue and green

  • demanding all DE mats

  • demanding BoEs

  • demanding profession mats

Why?
Because mats convert directly into gold on the AH.

It’s the same paid service, just disguised as “loot rules.”

So the idea that “tanks disappeared because Blizzard banned it” is simply false.
Tanks didn’t disappear.
They adapted.
They monetized differently.
And they’re still charging just in a form that’s harder to report.

If anything, the workaround proves the point:

  • the behavior never stopped

  • it just went underground

  • it’s still predatory

  • and Blizzard’s backpedal enabled it

So no, Blizzard didn’t “fix” anything.
They tried, streamers complained, Blizzard folded, and the same behavior came back with new packaging.

That’s the reality.
