I have had a battle tag friend from 2011 they use there real name on it . So any way some one can look you up for your Address phone # is not good .
Give me your real name I can google it pay a buck have all the info on you I would ever need . Like where you live where you work what your phone # is .
Not really there are a few that use there real name for it .
For the record, I completely agree that Battletags COULD be a privacy vulnerability, regardless of their intention. Blizzard could just offer a free battletag-change to everyone (in fact, I believe they already have in the past).
Or, as I also suggested, consider just having a separate “Forum-name”. Admittedly, your Battletag is used in virtually every other game and forum, but again, I’m all about respecting peoples’ right to privacy.
This certainly isn’t the biggest issue in the world either way. I just think it would foster a bit better sense of community on the forum, and could potentially cut down on a bit of trolling.
I mean hell, I’ve definitely seen where even I’ve developed a certain reputation on the forums, but it’s not like anyone has harassed me or anything.
That’s a realid friend. Before btags we could add people’s realid which was their real name. I still have my irl friends and my wife showing up under their real names on my list, but it’s a legacy thing.
If someone were to add my wife as a btag friend it would only show her btag name and not her realid name.
I’ve worked in marketing and in politics, and I can certainly attest that people can overlook basic instructions.
Which is why like I said, I’d just offer a free Battletag change to everyone, along with a splash screen like “IMPORTANT: This name is Public, DO NOT use your real name”, and you could even build in measures that automatically prohibit players from using a name on their account profile (this is actually fairly common practice these days).
In fact, it could be a good time to even improve Battletags. Get rid of the numbers entirely (unless you specifically want them), and let peoples’ Battletags be truly unique.
I mean, it’s fine. I think we’ve needed one anyway, as charming as it was to be named after a TV show I like, and use the name I’m most known by.
However, this;
I’ve just come to see as silly. I sympathize a bit with people who were unaware it was a public name, but… it’s separate from your login, and the same mistake can apply to naming a character after yourself in-game.
Most of the people I know with their name in their Battletag are either using a nickname or some combination of initials and name.
Honestly back in the Long Long ago when Blizzard tried to be real smart and implement RealID, people did wonder why they would go in that…absolute decision, instead of just using our Battle Tags.
So, this post is about cyber bullying people with their real identities and real profiles and which case then blizzard would need to build more preventative measures like Facebook.
This. ABSOLUTELY this. Anybody can go in game and send you a btag request. Doing that reveals your btag to them. That’s exactly why Blizzard tells you NOT to use your actual name as your battletag.
Also… Teufelgott#1764. If you think you can harass or stalk me because you know my btag, do your worst. Show me anything you can dig up that reveals my actual identity.
They still have realid friends as a legacy thing from pre-sc2. In fact, when you go to add a friend in-game and you click on the info symbol they still have the obsolete realID description in place of the btag description. You can’t add realid friends and you won’t see their real names, the description is just old and incorrect.
I wonder why they haven’t updated it to be accurate and if it would be difficult to convert them to btag friends.
