Greetings,
I am on a M1 iMac and have encountered a strange lag that shows up in a couple of ways:
- If I am out in the world searching for motes (Zangermarsh is my favorite) I can fly around freely. Eventually I notice that no mobs are spawning (no motes either) on the ground or I go to Shatt and it is empty and I realize I am “lagging.” Hmmm…as I write this it is more like I am out of phase with the rest of the game.
- If I am in an instance people stop moving even though I can still freely move around.
To fix the issue I force quit WoW and log back in and the game resumes fine.
Other info:
- In game chat works fine, always. As an example, I tried to meet with a guild member at A’dal for an enchant, he said the game showed me in Zangermarsh even though my screen showed A’dal (and no one else). After closing and starting Wow again I realized that almost five minutes had passed with me moving around on my screen talking freely in chat without actually moving anywhere.
- The Internet seems to be fine otherwise. I have had background pings going to a variety of servers (Google DNS, WoW Server, etc.) and they are rock solid, even at the moments I am “lagging” in game. Discord never drops, Apple music continues to stream, I can still browse on the World Wide Web, etc.
- Initially I thought it might be an add-on so I ran the game clean and the issue persists.
- My wife who also has a M1 Mac complains of similar issues. Although in truth she always complains so I didn’t pay much attention…:). I do wonder if this is an issue related to M1 Mac since I didn’t have any problems on my old 2015 iMac.
Thoughts? The part I find especially puzzling is that fact that chat continues to work and it used to be when I lagged very quickly I would stop moving like I was tethered to my actual position. Now I can basically move around anywhere and at times minutes pass before I notice.
Lagging out in while trying to tank in Kara is getting old though. Yet, other than these moments the game works very well.
Finulous,
What you’re describing is a “Desync” - a situation where your connection to the local server around your character gets interrupted, but you stay connected to your realm server which handles things like chat. Usually this is due to packet loss. My best advice for these is some LAN troubleshooting.
First up, power cycle your connection and restart your mac to clear all your network caches out. If your mac has the option to use an ethernet cable, you should also swap to that ethernet cable to see if it works.
If you don’t have ethernet available, get as close to the router as possible. If that works, it’s probably just a wifi stability issue. This will affect a live server game more than anything else because we can’t buffer information the same way a web browser or streaming page can. This is so that you don’t stand in the fire.
If you’re still having this problem, please create a Pathping test which catches a desync. You want to wait til you have an issue, then run the test for about 20 minutes. Then, open the resulting file and copy and paste the information into your next post.
If you have problems with posting it due to a link error, go ahead and copy paste this into your next post, and replace “Pathping goes here” with your test.

This is helpful, thank you for your response. I have spent part of the day pulling ethernet cables to both “Wow” Macs as well as making rebooting everything that can be rebooted. I have a pathping ready to roll if the problem persists. Hopefully you will never hear from me again…
Seeing someone desync like this is actually fairly commonplace. You have their data going to the server and back to their client, then to your client from the server. When they move, it has to go through the server first, which then updates their position with your client since you are in range and those updates are what cause the appearance of blinking around. You’ll see it frequently when you and someone else depart a flight path at the same time on the same route. Sometimes you’ll pull in front of them, and vice versa.
Even the lowest latency connection sees this fairly frequently.
I am not sure we are talking about the same issue here Tia. I desync for minutes at a time. When it happens in an instance, since I am normally the tank, it ends up as a wipe. If I let it go eventually the game will disconnect, but this can take a while (i.e., minutes). Normally I force quit Wow and relaunch it so I can get back in the game in 10 or 15 seconds.

Hey again Finulous.
Interestingly, I’m not seeing any packet loss and it doesn’t seem like you’re going through any of the known ISP issues we’ve seen recently, so that narrows things down. You did mention that you tried playing ‘without addons’ - but one thing I see sometimes when it’s not a simple LAN issue is some full scale UI corruption. To troubleshoot that, try uninstalling all addon managers first (Overwolf, Tukui Client, Raider.io, etc) and Reset your UI. Because addon managers can sync corrupt data between PCs, this is another possible cause for hangups across both your game clients.
Apart from that, if you’re using anything like VPN clients or other things that might change your connection path, I’d disable those applications as well.
Not sure why you’d use pathping and not looking glass
https://us-looking-glass.battle.net/
This can trace for route issues specifically along the path of battle.net or even specific realm, automatically. It’s an official blizzard tool.
I keep forgetting about that tool. And it shows that I have a 1194ms spike on Blizzard’s side. That explains why Whisperwind and Dentarg feel sluggish recently.
Been desynched for several minutes now. Chat still flowing but nothing else. Here is looking glass info:
