I can’t argue with that . I had a blast pvping in WoD when Horde were being absolutely curb stomped.
I have a very unpopular opinion, but I really think factions were a great feature before bgs and flying. Especially before the world got so large.
WQs only do so much to pull people into a contested zone, but when everyone gets flying it will die again. Just like in BfA. I’m pretty apathetic about either side at this point.
Unpopular maybe, but I don’t think you’re wrong - the open world is the one place where factions actually have some sort of purpose, especially when World PvP is involved. It can be great!
… But it’s never been much of an emphasis for the devs. And yeah, the world being 50+ zones larger than it was back then, that’s a problem too. People are way, way too split up for some proper shenanigans to get going. You could smack a town for literal hours and never even see another player, let alone an enemy player.
My wish for faction divide to stay is somewhat reversed of others who are “pro” factions. I don’t care too much about the mechanics side of thing and am more interested in the lore/story.
I wish the devs were better at reflecting what the faction divide has been traditionally in the earlier wow xpacs. It was never the main focus (except for vanilla kind of), but it was ever present. To me it added some flavor to the usual story of over coming the perilous odds of beating down some god-like villain.
Wrath and Cata had some of the best faction conflict story-wise IMO. Like in wrath we didn’t really “team up” with the other faction like we do lately, but instead we just fought each other less. Even in ICC one of the boss battles is a fight against the enemy faction.
MoP is where they started to do more poorly with faction conflict, because they first forced it into centerstage instead of the background role it had before. Then they took it even further and had a faction leader become the main villain. The Devs seemed to get it in their mind that if they told a faction conflict story it had to be the story.
So then it became this black and white thing. Either Horde and Alliance were united in purpose against some foe, or all we cared about was the destruction of the other faction. However this made for awkward storytelling cause since you have players on both sides it’s hard to resolve those stories in a way that satisfies both audiences.
Take BfA for example. As horde we had to fight our own faction again, and we lost the war. Many of the actions we took throughout the story were made completely pointless cause the story dictated that we had to lose. It makes the work we put in (story wise) feel wasted.
The alliance also got an unsatisfactory resolution. They “won” the war, but it’s basically in word only. It’s hardly reflected in the story at all. In fact, I’d guess that if it weren’t for the dev at blizz who specifically stated alliance won, players wouldn’t actually know definitively. Obviously this evidence is completely anecdotal, but I don’t think I’ve heard any alliance players talk or act like they were satisfied with the outcome.
TLDR: From a story perspective I want faction conflict/divide to stay, but I want it to go back to a background role storywise (like TBC-Cata) instead of the “Main Story” (like MoP and BFA. Faction conflict as done in xpacs like WotLK show that we don’t have to team up and completely set aside the faction differences (story wise) to beat the big bad. IMO WoW/faction conflict is at its best when it’s present and relevant but not the focus and/or ultimate deciding factor.
Sadly I skipped WoD completely. Quit in late MOP and returned mid Legion. (College just got too crazy).
That opinion is fair, and I agree with it. Flying took a lot away from conflicts and rivalries, and tbh I still think flying should be disabled for people with WM on. (that’s pretty unpopular opinion, most seem to want their flying no matter what).
I’m a massive BG fan, so I can def say that was one of the best things added for me. But I miss having actual rivalries with people. Seeing the same people more frequently in BG’s felt really good. Now even with this content drought you rarely ever see the same people.
And even though I support factions, I’m not even a big WPVPer, rarely do WQ’s or in the zones. I typically sit in Oribos, and I even use my tongues pots to talk to the opposite faction (so I’m not against some things)
I’m just throwing a lot of things I like out there none of which really involve having factional divides, but it’s just that sense of being Alliance. Hard to explain. So many threads in the PVP forums complaining about horde dominance. Not when I’m there.
I haven’t seen anyone trying to get rid of factions, Just getting cross faction PvE added. Which the factions temporarily putting their differences aside, or having small interloping relationships between factions has been a thing for ages.
This is something I have been saying for awhile now, the playerbase isn’t what it once was, and dividing it further just makes things worse. You can keep the factions and still allow players of both sides to run PvE content. I mean they already basically let you PvP with the other faction. Also, whenever they do a faction conflict expansion, we either end up fighting together to stop a world ending threat, or it ends in basically a draw because you can’t really have one side win over the other.
My number one rule about MMO design discussion is that suggesting a conflict of interest be resolved by getting one side to quit the game is strictly forbidden.
Oh I fully agree, Horde is currently getting to have their cake and eat it too. They like being the more popular faction, they should have to deal with the consequences of it, including longer BG queue times.
Was bringing it up to point out Blizz already allows PvP to be cross faction in a way. So the faction lines are already kind of pointless in a type of gameplay where it should be rigid.
Eliminating pvp servers was wrong and I can tell who has never played on one in here. There are no facts just wishes and assumptions that things would improve.
Not many liked your nostalgic “World PvP”. If they did, you wouldn’t be complaining about taking pvp servers away because you would be enjoying World PvP with lots of people.
Guess what people did when they had a way out?
You just seem to be in a “Force people to like what I like” kind of mode.
This is the problem caused by people that “don’t care” keep getting what they want. Sooner or later we might be asking for Cataclysm Classic if this nonsense keep going.
