Whether or not the tank is holding threat during this process is completely irrelevant , and is yet another logical fallacy known as a red herring that any intelligent person should easily be able to distinguish.

As long as you wait to let the tank generate some threat, nova is an essential part of doing good damage. One flamestrike+CoC shatter combo puts a group at like half health. If you have 3 mages you barely even need a tank because theyll die so fast.

If your tank cant handle the most effective aoe class in the game doing what they’re supposed to, he/she is a bad tank.

Having tanked in this and other games for almost 15 years I don’t understand the problem here. The mage has to be close to the mobs, so therefor close to the tank. Unless the mage is running ahead of the group by half a mile I don’t see how people are saying that rooting mobs by the tank is a problem. Freeze mobs near tank, tanks aggros things, dps kills things.

You realize Cone of Cold and Arcane explosion do way more damage against targets affected by frost nova, right?

If you’re coning and AEing without ever using nova, your damage will be underwhelming.

Also, Blizzard is mostly only used for extremely large pulls to slow since it can’t crit. It’s not good damage for the average dungeon pull.

I think you left out the most important point or you didn’t explain it clearly.

The reason why you don’t nova is because the mobs will attack the closest target. Some melee, like rogues, cannot take a beating. Clothies will get one shot.

Additionally, a fundamental mechanic every mage doesn’t seem to get is that a rooted mobs attacks whatever they’re stacked on, tank or not. So naturally, this split pack ends up near the ranged to which the mage Nova’s again rooting them right on top of the healer who immediately gets deleted.

I run with a druid tank, a holy paladin, and either 2 additional mages or an additional mage and a hunter. We frost nova and shatter combo all the time. He doesn’t always hold threat, but does for a good chunk of each battle. Rarely is anyone at risk of drying. We also clear dungeons extremely fast. Maybe you should run meters so you can actually gauge how efficient your dps are. Mages that utilize all their tools put out great numbers.

Also any group that auto kicks for frost nova usage, especially in a raid, you play with some really cranky people, lol. Honestly this whole thread wreaks of “get off my lawn” from people that never evolved passed vanilla gameplay.
