Still doesn't beat Legion, sorry Blizz <3

I never said that though.

I have been playing since Cata (played WOW 1 when I was a teenager though.) So Expac for me:

MOP- Rough in 5.0, 5.1 (almost quit) but from 5.2 on was fantastc
WOD- I guess I’m lucky in a way in that I spent 6 months in a hospital plus another year in rehab so I don’t remember much.
Legion- The best. Period. End of sentence. Film at 11!
BoA- Great videos but playwise was meh.
Shadowlands- So bad I kinda wish I was back in the hospital.
DF- The story was meh but other then that I really, really enjoyed it. The awaking raids and alt-friendly was the best part.

Legion was the GOAT. Yes RNG legendaries sucked, yes, the fact we couldn’t easily play on alts or switch specs due to the artifact power grind sucked. THAT ASIDE, the sheer amount of discoverable content that actually felt fun and unique was unparalleled.

Alts weren’t insanely boring because they came with unique artifacts and class quests, campaigns, and discoverable appearances (to include the hidden appearance easter eggs each spec had) you actually felt like you had something new and different to do. The narrative itself was simple, yet had a strong enough start to be compelling right from the get-go. Everybody pretty much wanted to sack Gul’dan for what he did, Alliance and Horde! There was enough mystery and allure to the lore that had people talking and theorizing for days on end. Why were the echoes of Arthas lingering around giving messages to death knights? What was bolvar up to? Who was Xalatath? How did Odyn lose his eye? What was that void essence in the Emerald Dream etc?

Granted these are all answers Blizzard has pretty much fumbled since, but at the time, they were very fun to delve into. The dungeons all felt important and unique, not stuffed with nameless bosses the likes of Void Speaker Elrich or “Void Monstrosity” at the end of the Rookery. But grander than life figures like Helya, Odyn, Xavius etc. The world PVP arena quests were a load of fun first time around, especially due to the ignoring of faction mechanics. Then the first raid was a memorable banger, The Emerald Nightmare. Don’t even get me started on the hype of the other raids such as Nighthold and Tomb of Sargeras.

Idk, Legion just seems like a lightning in a bottle scenario. I doubt they’ll ever be able to create something like it again. They were riding highly off the desperation of a botched WoD to win back player faith. You thought it’d be the same with botched Shadowlands going into DF, but idk, seems there was something special that just made Legion come together in the end.

Seriously, TWW gives me major Legion vibes based on the excellent zones, story, new content, new systems, etc.

I kinda wish they’d revist those excellent Kirintor WQs. I vastly perferred those mana saber riding quests over the Dragonflying ones, along with the fun jumping puzzle ones.

If they csn keep topping off Delves and delivering on that story, ill be pretty damn happy.

So for me the only things I liked about Legion was that it was about the Legion, had Sargeras in it, the whole going to Antorus was cool, Artifact weapons and class quests, and the new things they tried like wq’s and m+. I got bored of Legion pretty fast though and only popped in to do raids and goof around and leave again tho.

I still don’t get the crazy love for the Surumar raid as it was just okay imo.

I’d honestly say the Saga has the potential to absolutely demolish all prior expansions if it builds good momentum.

One of the better expansions. The most fun I’ve had playing this game in a lot of years was during Legions 2-year run. Wasn’t a fan of ap like most but being bombarded with tons of currencies like in DF didn’t feel a whole lot different than the ap stuff. Will admit that anything coming after Wod had to be better lol. Wod was more like 2 big content patches that you would normally get in an expansion that they slapped together and called it an expansion lol. TWW too early to be judged.

Love that we’re comparing the ~3ish years of legion against the 3ish weeks of TWW.

So if you’re comparing Legion to TWW you have to be comparing Legion season launch, not some middle to end memory you have.

My memories of Legion season launch are RNG Legendary items with a hidden hard-cap on how many Legendary items you could learn (that Blizzard would adamantly lie about despite a ton of data)
World-boss rotations dictating what classes got shafted.
Spamming Maw.
Not being able to play alts / other specs.
Professions being a huge let down.
Titanforging luck on Trinkets dictating who was OP or not.
And Shadow Priests killing themselves.

I was not there during legion. But i must say, im less impressed by TWW than I was by Shadowland. Shadowland season start was great. The universe, the 4 different lands. I kind of like it. At least at start

Like that every 2 years. December of 2008 same things, a month after Wolk released much of the same, and expect the same thing to happen after tww fades in two years. They did fail how they handled the legendary system in Legion no doubt. More old school myself in that a legendary should either be a drop in a raid, or be a questline.

Artifact Power and Legionaries definitely feel “modern” in the “tRiPlE AaA” gaming world, and not in the good way…

Hold on now, I didn’t compare TWW to the entirety of Legion.
But we already know that TWW is just a chapter in the big storyline so I’m not really expecting too much but we’ll see if it holds up.

Dragonflight started out really well, but as it went on I just found it kinda silly and the villains were extremely generic imo.

Alot of people here are mentioning how Legion only got good halfway through. I found the Nighthold and onwards all breathtakingly good, and they introduced catchup systems fairly quickly into nighthold to make the artifact power grind less bad.

The same people who cried about systems in BfA and Shadowlands unironically forget that Legion was THE system expansion.

Legion had:

  1. RNG Legendaries
  2. RNG Netherlight Crucible effects
  3. RNG Titanforging
  4. Infinite AP Grind that actually made a significant difference
  5. Artifact Traits were just things we already had in MoP, repackaged and returned from the WoD pruning

What it also had was a percectly okay story

Debatable.

That is all, Legion was good, but it was not the second coming of your savior. This has a very nice access point in regards to game mechanics, I don’t need to log in every day and play and be upset I missed a day.

i have to admit i HATED this too.

The rest of your points were not excessive enough to me for me to disregard the good though.

I think that means alot to me, because despite the bad/inconvenient things from Legion, I absolutely loved every other aspect of it.

I think I also place a lot of importance on story/soundtrack/atmosphere as well, and Suramar absolutely blew me away.

A few inconvenient systems (in my opinion) will never change this for me.

Legion was really great throughout the whole expansion. Minus the grind for artifact power and RNG legendaries of course.

War Within isn’t even a month old yet, so it’s not possible to judge yet.

TWW is barely started, give it time.

IMO, legion was at best a 4.5/10

Absolutely hated suramar and the monotonous Rep Grinds & AP Grind.

Chris Metzen left after Legion and you got the moronic Danuser writing and direction instead of the original warcraft vibes. Which further degenerated into nonsense with the american left wing political panic and blizzard lawsuit. Maybe it’ll improve now that Metzen is back, but these projects take years so you won’t see his influence until the next expansion probably.

It doesn’t even beat Shadowlands or BFA. This expansion is 3/10 trash.
