I did this! With an addon called WitchHunt back in the day. It would alert me to every spell cast and tell me who cast it. It was based on a whitelist so I could pay special attention to what people were doing. Stealth was one of those spells, and it was immensely handy. As a rogue, I could be prepared to look for and surprise someone else who I knew was stealthing in the area.
Not to say it doesn’t harm PvP for stealth classes - it absolutely does - but don’t pretend this never happened in Vanilla. It absolutely did. I did this. My whole PvP team did this.
In fact, I liked the WitchHunt addon so much that I created a WeakAura that does something similar.
We’ve discussed this. You claim is existed, no one used it.
People use it now, they didn’t then. Two VERY different scenarios your brain can’t wrap your head around.
That’s the basis of your entire argument this entire time.
Witch-hunt was created in July, 2008. There’s a reason all these spy addons were developed and released in TBC… the same expansion that released something new to pvp… and it wasn’t WPvP. Also why you remember your “team” using it…
People didn’t really do 2H tanks back then much either. Now they do.
People didn’t regularly AoE dungeon level to 60 in a few days, now they do.
People didn’t really use Auctioneer like addOns like they do now.
etc…
All of it was possible and available then, but they do it now.
The combat log has always informed you about enemy actions, including stealth activation/deactivation. People back then monitored their combat logs and used Addons to help them do it.
Today people do it even more. Welcome to Classic WoW in 2019.
I haven’t the foggiest on range because I know the Combat Log has gotten tweaks. In Patch 2.4, you could have addons run all kinds of crazy simultaneous filters at once, which is why Recount and such became way more useful in Wrath onward. So the range may have been monkey’d with but I’m not seeing anything to contradict 200 yards from older posts.
But apparently files never migrated over when they updated the site. This spawned a host of addons that attempted to fix/update/improve Spell Alert throughout Vanilla, TBC, and onward.
I could not tell you if it provided any audio cues, but it would put a big, unable to be dragged around, box with the tracked event. It was very spammy though as it picked “NPC is running away in fear!” and other events all along with casts and buffs and such.
I just monitored the combat log like I did in DAoC and Lineage before I played WoW. Spy is a much nicer interface. But I still have my combat log open out of habit. I feel kinda naked without it.
I think its funny the couple of folks supporting this addon only have the “it existed before” as the basis for their argument - which I have stated numerous times is perhaps the absolute weakest argument you could have.
I’ve yet to see a valid reason why this addon should exist. I think it heavily breaks the intent of PvP and severely skews balance in favor of those who have this addon - because lets be real, 99.99% of the entire player base is not scoping through their combat log to see any actions occur at all - it just doesn’t happen. You are given an unfair advantage over someone who does not have this addon - that is not why addons exist - it is not to skew balance.
I think this is actually FAR worse than the LFG addon and should absolutely be banned - maybe just try to play the game instead of having an addon that makes it incredibly simple for you?
Every addon can and often does “skew” balance. Folks running Arena during Wrath were definitely disadvantaged against those who ran Gladius as an addon, which let you track the entire enemy team in a single customizable window.
You really need a better argument.
Or put very very simply: Blizzard would have already broken this and so many other addons in the last 15yrs if parsing the Combat Log was some sacrosanct act.
I need a better argument? Are you serious? Like really?
You are such an insane troll, who has provided nothing to support your argument besides " it existed".
I’ve never experienced someone who thinks they are so good at a debate yet have provided really nothing to support it.
No every addon does not skew balance - 100% false and a stupid claim to make.
Please provide a SINGLE reason why this shouldn’t be banned - you haven’t besides the it existed argument so you literally have no leg to stand on at all.
My incredulity is really in response to your unwarranted arrogance when you are losing an argument.
Funny thing is, as we’ve stated here, no one used it in the original game. The addon they’re linking to claim they did only had 400 downloads. Around 0.003% of the playerbase…
I bet they’re going to claim they themselves used it, and were part of those 400 people lmfao.
You had more of a chance to be a High Warlord than you were to have been those 400 people. I can’t even rn. xD
Ah right. WitchHunt is what we switched to. Lots of addons saw abandonment back then. Sorry to have misled you. My memory is not sharp enough to remember what we used prior. Maybe it was a SCT module?
It sounds like your mind is made up on the issue though. But we had these things. Combat text monitors existed. If you would like tonight, I can get you a name.
Edit: WitchHunt does have a 1.12 version. I’m curious where you are getting 2008 from. Wowace?
