The novel stretches her final decision out for a very, very long time. She’s sent to a great number of “unjust” afterlives, and that doesn’t yet convince her to join him. What convinces her are his accurate prophecies and the idea that he would forge a new afterlife without a Maw. Why is feeding the Maw suddenly not the biggest evil, but a lesser one? You tell me. The plot demanded it. Descartes’ demon visited her and did everything he could to deceive her with illusions.
