Bad retcon at best.
Some day, we’re going to find the open portal between the mortal world and the afterlife that existed since before the titans arrived on Azeroth that lets random vampire demons infiltrate void-covered world soul-housing planets with corrupt titans to create the burning legion as well as allowing random bandage fellows to become (insert any lore about the brokers from SL I’ve got nothing), but today is not that day. We didn’t even notice the empire on our own planet despite having a spaceship capable of easy atmospheric and interstellar flight and at least 3 more disabled ones.

Ethereal cats look like something from Dr Who.
Why? They’re both energy people. They look somewhat similar. The Ethereals have wrappings, the Brokers who properly exist in the Shadowlands are a little more cohesive. I would’ve honestly been surprised if they were completely unrelated, the first thing I thought when I saw a Broker was “AHA. I bet they’re linked to the Ethereals somehow.”

The first time I saw a Broker I thought of Ethereals. Not even shocked that they are linked. They both have vendor/trading culture as well.
