Speccing into Disc

For levelling just go shadow until 50+ where you will do more serious dungeons and look for pre-bis gear.

For some reason I read the OP as “slipping a disc”

Lol no lets hope not xD.

I think the key is taking a look at your optimal leveling rotation and then picking talents accordingly.

For leveling, you will be using MB>SW:P>wand-till-it’s-dead. Forget about Smite and Holy Fire. So obviously going full Disc from the go is not going to help you much.

You want to start build up from 5/5 Wand Spec and Spirit Tap. Improved SW:P and 3 points on Shadow Focus (which is basically shadow spell hit). Only then should you go deep on Disc.

From that point on you can keep leveling like that or respec at 40 and rush to Shadowform, which will make the last stretch of the game sooo much easier. If you wanna go heals then you can respec again when you feel comfortable (aka dungeon healing becomes your main area of activity) to the good old 21/30/0 build.

Does spirit tap work if I don’t last hit the enemy? Because if that’s the case that could seem useful in dungeons as a healer as well?

You can heal dungeons as any spec. Nothing in the discipline tree really helps that much healing dungeons. If you want to do more damage, spec shadow. You can still heal.

You have to get the last hit. I’ve taken to using my wand to try to snipe last hits in dungeons whenever I heal them.

Though for leveling purposes, being Shadow will make things much smoother while not in a dungeon which is why it’s usually recommended until you’re either almost or at 60.

Okay, so if I were to just go shadow do i still take Want specialization early? Like after spirit tap? Then just continue with shadow?

What I did was get 5/5 Wand Spec from level 10-14, then go Spirit Tap from 15-19 and continued down Shadow.

At 40 I respecced to get Shadow Form, then put the next 5 talents back into Wand Spec and I’ve been continuing down Discipline since.

I’m sure you’ll be fine no matter what. People always say to go shadow but there’s no point if you don’t find it fun. I personally (my priest is lvl 42 right now) enjoy mostly Disc but I also have 10 points in holy (holy specialization and divine fury) and 5 in shadow for spirit tap. As far as I’m concerned, spirit tap is the only thing I absolutely need out of shadow (although I wish I had silence for PvP).

End of the day, play what you want. A disc priest will be able to heal anything as you’re leveling, maybe get a couple pieces of armor with +healing for when you’re grouping (usually a helmet and one other piece is fine for most early content). -As to why holy is the “healing spec,” spiritual guidance/spiritual healing are both deep in the holy tree. I hear some people sacrifice Power Infusion just to get Spiritual Guidance, meaning they end up fairly deep in Holy and Disc.

Honestly, the 15% mana regen from disc will beat anything deep holy had going for it until you’re lvl 35+ and can spec into 5/5 spirit -> spell power. Even then, anything prior to level 50 (even spellcleave groups) can be healed as shadow. After that it’s riskier to do so, but the point is spec whatever you want. I’m sure you can make a case for yourself if you throw power infusions on the wizard of your group, even at 60.
