Sure, I like to join a random Dungeon or Raid every now and then to do something different, but it shouldn’t be mandatory for me to have to join a group of people to obtain gear good enough to be able to conquer PVE on my own.
“but it’s an mmo”
Yeah, but we are all able to play without having to be in a group for most of the game. If PVP players want to skip PVE, I should get to skip guild/group nonsense.
Lord…did you hear about the guy who I guess quit working on WoW after like 15 years?
I read his comments…if he had his way you’d pretty much HAVE to be in a guild to get into any end game content in this game.
Thankfully his views are antiquated.
If Im forced to guild up to play this game I’ll quit. MMO or not.
I did 1 mythic with my guild this entire expansion (And that was just because I wanted to finish the Jaina storyline). I did only LFRs because I am not really into heavy raiding anymore. My gear is just fine for killing rares/elites in the world. Of course, that could also be because I’m a hunter.
now…correct…but you have a guy literally quitting work onthe game who said the game is bad now because it needs more reliance on guild participation.
This game doesnt need that sort of person having any input, IMO
" Game designer Chris Kaleiki was an employee of Blizzard for 13 years, and in that time worked on [World of Warcraft] PvP, class design (in particular the monk), and its Ashran zone, among others. He’s been there so long he’s got two characters and an item named after him. But this year Kaleiki left Blizzard, and in [a 15-minute video posted to YouTube] he explains why.
“For a while now, probably too long, I’ve just been unhappy with the state of the game,” Kaleiki says, noting that the addition of Classic highlighted the differences between its vision and that of the modern game, which he describes as “a little muddled”. An example he gives is the changing importance of guilds.
“I think in Classic the guild’s a big deal,” he says. “To do anything at endgame you really need to be in a guild. What this does is it creates interdependence among players, where they really need each other in order to be successful. And I think this can feel really restrictive at times, but ultimately what it really does is it creates cohesion, it creates community.”
In reducing the importance of guilds for the sake of those who want to experience WoW solo or don’t want to have to deal with bossy guild leaders, a focus on players has been lost, Kaleiki argues, and replaced by a focus on NPCs and their story.
“Warcraft and WoW has always had a story,” he says, “but lately I think in the modern game the story is just a bigger part of it. The characters and all their own dramas really soak up a lot of air in the game. Whereas I think in a virtual world, in an MMO, really the players are the story.”
What’s more, he sees the modern vision of WoW as being too focused on extrinsic things, progression systems and engagement, and suggests that it “should focus on the core features of the game, again systems like the guild system,” which “really only an MMO can do.” https://www-pcgamer-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.pcgamer.com/amp/wow-designer-quits-after-13-years-says-hes-unhappy-with-the-state-of-the-game/?usqp=mq331AQFKAGwASA%3D&_js_v=0.1#aoh=16057944473204&csi=1&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&_tf=From%20%251%24s&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcgamer.com%2Fwow-designer-quits-after-13-years-says-hes-unhappy-with-the-state-of-the-game%2F
yeah.this game needs less of that sort working on it and more trying to make it appeal to a broader player base with a lot more diversity of play styles.
I’m about as solo as it gets, as long as there’s a path to something at least as good as the profession gear, which was 400 before the squish when LFR was 430 so I’m not asking for much. I’d take the equivalent of a 400 character in gear I made myself. Next expansion lets me make legendaries so it’ll be a letdown if there isn’t good normal gear in there somewhere.
Other than darkshore and islands I’ve never done heroic, or mythic, anything. Now’s a weird time to say “look at my gear” (hey I got all 4 sockets in the neck filled!) but this is a late alt made almost entirely in prepatch and I’m still more than good enough geared for the world. I was good enough for the world when my gear was still half heirloom. Just sayin.
My issue with BfA at launch was a heroic dungeon geared character still didn’t feel geared enough for an add or two outside boralus. I really hope they don’t make that mistake twice, and if it was a spec issue well I’m staying away from spriest this time around. I even heard they might be good but after that debacle the class is kind of dead to me. But I digress.
90% of the issues with WoW as a game stem from going against everything he mentioned. While WoW followed the general concepts he talks about, it saw unprecedented growth. When they strayed from it, decline.
This notion that Blizzard, or any game developer, could somehow create a user experience tailored to every conceivable player’s desire… is asinine.
While the notion of a “Baskin’ Robbins” 31 flavors type of WoW might sound good on paper — the only thing that realistically comes out of it is 31 new names for “vanilla”. And not even good vanilla… like bland vanilla.
edit: and just to reiterate the point here. Artifacts, Azerite, Conduits … it’s the same thing re-branded each expansion. There aren’t any substantive changes to the systems Blizzard are introducing – they’re just changing the name. And weve seen this storyline before… Bad Hordie who gets taken down just as we discover some lost place in the world… …
too bad there might also be some other problems that caused the decline lol…like crap content, crap systems, etc.
somehow I doubt that not being FORCED to join a guild killed the game given you can join a guild anytime you choose to.
And it’s to the game’s detriment. The social aspects are what make MMOs really shine, and the fact that WoW is no longer leaning into that is hurting the game long term, imo.
It’s true. I’ve been guildless for awhile and honestly it’s kind of boring not having that group of people, but guilds are less important now so they don’t focus as much on recruiting or doing content… as a group.
