Solid state storage required

I dont know what the complaint about. SSD aren’t as expensive as they used to be. And tbh once you’ve had SSD you’ll never look back. The load times are almost non-existence

Higher quality models => more data. More data => longer load times.

I pretty much need to replace my SSD. It’s about full with just 256 GB of total space. Does Macrium handle cloning to larger drives ok? Otherwise, I’ll just use a *NIX and dd.

Hint: If you're going to get a SSD, try to get a 1-2 TB drive if you can afford it. All these games that want 50-100 GB of space really eat up a small drive. Even if you keep an old spinning rust drive for other stuff, it's really nice to keep the games and programs on the SSD.

If I had the funds, I’d make a file server for myself. But I want it to sync with my phone too (taking a picture syncs to my server, and uploading to my server syncs the file to the phone). Sounds like you have a hell of a setup.

Yes. I’ve never had trouble cloning a smaller drive to a larger one using it.

I’ve only ever run into issues with Macrium on really old drives that were half dead. Usually running a few commands will fix it though.

You’d be surprised how cheaply you can buy or build a file server for these days. They don’t need much horsepower so you can get an older system and just load it up with massive amounts of storage.

As for the syncing… There’s plenty of software for that sort of thing. You’d just need to look around a bit.

As for my setup… Yeah, I like toying around with it and I’ve got a lot of data since my primary hobby is digital artwork and writing. I need multiple backups of these things!

I lost a bunch of old digital paintings I did when I was a teenager when my drive crashed. This was before I knew to better, obviously. Never again yo.

I’ve used this software for work, and the only time it failed was due to user error. Imaging PCs was very easy. Close to 600 PCs iirc?

Since you don’t need a GPU, that can cut the cost to probably $400? I think I’d get a 256GB SSD and a 4TB HDD. Then go for a low-power solution maybe? If it’s going to run non-stop, it may as well be low-power.

I have super convenient setup myself; i’m running a main router and 2 switches. I can dump the file server in the closet haha. I think I can support a LAN party with both deskspace and networking to host like 20 devices. Feels World First :C

I’ve cloned tons of drives with Macrium myself. It was only recently that I ran into issues and it was at a particular client’s business that never listens to anything you tell them. They had some HDDs that were like ten years old that I’m surprised functioned at all. They were seriously messed up.

Macrium threw multiple errors trying to clone those. I ended up having to copy the data manually. Fun times. lol

Yeah, for sure. No sense in spending more on an electric bill than needed, yeah?

Nice! Closet’s definitely the best place for it if you don’t have a home office–maybe even if you do depending on space.

Speaking of lan parties… I considered building a powerhouse of a computer with multiple GPUs and what-not to install a couple of VMs on for lan parties.

Haven’t actually done it yet but it’d be a fun project.

hey dumb question…
how do you know if you have one?

Device manager, under disk drives. It’ll either tell you outright or you can lookup the info it gives you to get an answer.

hey cyouskin.
i love you.

you also helped but I couldn’t find where a device manager was.
xD
I’m really bad with technology.

Haha. The important thing is that you got the info you needed.

If you ever need the device manager though… You can get to it by using windows+X and selecting it from the menu.

Or you can just do what I do and hit windows, type it in and select it that way. It’s faster for me personally but I type very, very fast.

Just not on phones. When will I be able to login as Viking Santa on the PC again?? Come on Blizzard. Fix your stuff. lol

How do you two find out about these things? Is there a beginers guide to general computering you did?

2070 FTW edition runs 3 DisplayPorts. But they are 600 USD each. That would be insane.

My biggest host was 6 players, our only issue was that we drank all the Mountain Dew in a day, and had 2 more days of gaming to go…

Experience, school, and a bunch of certifications. lol

This is easy stuff though. You could learn most of what we’ve talked about by watching one of the tech YouTubers, like Jay’s two cents, for example.

A truer tragedy was never spoken.

You should have bought more yo!

Yeah, the 2070 is a pretty sick card. I’m still running a 1080 ti myself but I’m upgrading it shortly when the new cards come out.

Probably going to get a 3080 ti.

Getting really, really good with Google searches. I’ve been playing with computers for ~15 years myself. I have experience in programming, System Admin, Network Engineering, and your standard Helpdesk.

If you want to learn about computers, I suggest getting very good with Google first. If it’s a career you want out of it, follow some popular youtube channels, like Linus Tech Tips. But ultimately, you gotta do some reading, and Google is your friend. Watch some youtube educational videos about the CompTIA A+ Certification test/study guides.

I’m running a 970 as my main card. and my HTPC is a 1050Ti. I’m running a 8700K, underclocked at 4.4GHz (im stable at 5.0GHz at 1.45VCore). I don’t know if I should wait for the 3090 next year or so, or if I should get a 2070 now.

FWIW, I’d get a 3rd 144fps/1080p monitor if I go a 2070. (My desk is 5ft wide, 30in deep)

I’d personally wait if you have the budget for it and you’re happy enough with the 970’s performance for now.

Would you believe I only have one monitor at the moment? Waiting on a replacement for the other. The one is really plenty though. 32in, 144hz at 1440p.

Ssd and getting a 2070super are on my list of things to do.

I have the budget, luckily. The 970 fits my needs, but I recently had my CPU cooler’s seal breached on the block. And the fluid dripped directly onto the GPU hitting one of the chips. I was able to turn off the computer and stop the leak, but ultimately replaced the entire 360mm AIO. The GPU is okay now, but I think that chip lost a couple years of it’s life due to an overcurrent. :grimacing:

And I replaced the leaky AIO with another 360mm block with RGB, because I like pretty colors.

Maximus Code X
CPU Cooler as RBG
16GB RGB RAM/Trident (GSkill)
3 140mm RGB fans. (1 exhaust, 2 front of case)
3 120 pressure RGB fan (radiator)

It’s a light show.

No, I wouldn’t. I mean, I’m using 1 monitor atm because I moved recently and somehow lost a box with a 125V power cable in it…so…1 monitor down!

I might get something like what you got and use it as my primary monitor in the center. But the different resolutions are janky :C
