I’m good at making male names, but I am/play females so it’s a wasted talent lol. I try to keep within 2 syllables, 1 if I can. I like short and easy to pronounce names, most of them are taken. Using a first and last name would be great, I already do so with TRP.
Get those people in voice chat and ask them to pronounce their names.
Everquest had two-part names, and surnames.
In 1999.
Five years before the original version of WoW was even released.
Twenty one years ago.
We’re basically still playing with AOL handles. If they don’t expand on the naming system sometime soon, I might just explode.
Because the second name would probably be either account wide or realm wide.
Now imagine naming your dwarf Billy Longboat. Congratulations, all your other characters are stuck with that name. You want a mysterious night elf? Her name is Etherelia Longboat. Doesn’t fit, does it? Now replicate for every character.
Or by character… Gw2 does it by character.
That’s pure conjecture.
There is absolutely no reason to assume that this is how it would work.
Getting a good Human name seems almost impossible.
They tried this on another Blizzard game, it didn’t go very well. In the early stages of Starcraft 2 Beta they tried a naming system where you create two names separated by a period in the middle. Not even two weeks into the system you had people on the ranked the ladder with names like Childmo.Lester topping the list for everyone to see. Instead of trying to police a naming system where people would use that period to get around censors, they scrapped it immediately.
An account has to be completely inactive for either 2 or 4 years to free up names. Which, to me, feels like a little bit too long of a time. Would make more sense if names were freed up based on inactivity of the character in question.
And HealCowForever doesn’t?
Imo, if prepatch hits and the account wasn’t used for the entire last expansion, it should be freed up. That way mass name unlocks always coincide with the most new players joining the game.
Because why would we have them? This isn’t a game focused around RP, its about war.
That’s probably the worst response I’ve heard in the history of this forum.
“Names don’t matter cuz like, this game like, isn’t about names. It’s like, about war n stuff.”
Nevermind that it’s a Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Game
Yeah, it’s not a Game about Role Playing. It’s just a Role Playing Game.
Laziness. Pure and simple.
They shifted away from rpg aspect a long time ago, that all got dumped with post-classic’s deletion of element resists, hunters ammo, ect.
I like doing just that. Lol.
ESO lets you use punctuation. EQ2 lets you use last names, but they’re cosmetic only and don’t let you copy first names. FFXIV iirc last names were mandatory, but per character.
I could get on with optional last names. So ling as there’s a no tolerance, one flag forced rename for terrible life choices.
This is the bane of all roleplayers, having to change character ideas due to the fact that some nobody has already claimed your character’s name on a 98 demon hunter and never played it again… it sucks and needs to change. Last names are all we need.
Star Trek Online handles this really well (though the game itself is average at best). Over there every account can use any name, and to avoid potential confusion they add an account name at the end in chat messages. In WoW it would look something like:
Amarlly@mybattletag says: Hello world.
Or, you can be a fan of classic rock, and pick the right race to make your name choice into a dad joke lol. xD
