So this happened

I was so happy when I saw that. Serves EA right!

I totally saw that coming. And it was glorious.

It really was. If I could post meme links in forums, there’d be a lot of wheezing laughing memes right now from me…

Edit Ahem, apparently that emoji thing doesn’t work. I’ll just substitute with

it was kind of weird that for 2018 owning a PS4 was more worthwhile for games than a gaming PC

Kinda makes me want to get my brother’s PS4 again to play the fabulous singleplayer entries.

You know that shot from the Khadgar animated comic? Where he’s watching Dalaran fall, burning? I know what he felt like in that moment now.

So now with Bungie leaving activision AND taking Destiny with them their stocks are in freefall. They are now at the place before CoD WW2 came out. As well as before Destiny 2 even started releasing decent content. They’ve shoved all their eggs in one basket while EA has been trying to diversify with indie devs.

People can say all they want “oh this is just a correction.” or “oh they’ll just bounce back.” While the other side says “wow this has everything with them trying to make soldier 76 gay” or “the elle incident” which they knew about weeks in advance and didn’t bother doing anything about. It has nothing to do with these things.

This has been a long time coming really. Activision has been riding the CoD train for years and now with their most recent release getting positive reviews, then with them shoving mtx in after the fact; most reviewers wised up and pulled their positive reviews. Executives are jumping left and right. Destiny 2 had a rockier launch than the first one arguably with it’s monetization. WoW is in a bad spot right now and the best they can do is a “See you Later Bundle” to try to scrounge up some quick cash from the whales. The thing that happened with HoTS is pretty crap too. Even Overwatch has a dwindling playerbase. Acti/blizz announcing they have to cut costs doesn’t help either. Let’s not forget the entirety of Blizzcon being overshadowed by Diablo “do you not have phones?” Immortal.

Investors have lost faith in the company. Maybe with this the people in charge will wake up and realize that they need to retain their PC centric audience or they’re gonna go the way of THQ.

I’ve heard “WoW is dead” too many times over too many years to panic just yet.

It doesn’t look great, but…we’ll see. I honestly think the worst case scenario is permanent maintenance mode. This game would still be profitable as-is just from subscriptions and microtransactions with people doing legacy content forever.

I mean, hell, isn’t EQ2 still running?

I still think this is honestly going to help us in the long run. Enekie is always saying Blizzard responds (in a way) positively to pressure, and she’s right honestly.

Sometimes people need a gentle nudge. Sometimes they need a taser to the b-hole.

The original everquest got a new expansion last month, even.

It’s true that “WoW is dead” was a common refrain, but that’s usually come from people claiming that other MMOs would do the deed. It was realized long ago that the only thing that could kill WoW is WoW.

And while there’s no point in saying that WoW is dead just yet, it’s pretty evident that WoW is doing an awful lot of damage to itself.

Yep, that is definitely a cause for concern.

On the other hand, that itself is not without precedent. Blizzard and the game have recovered from serious missteps before.

I guess we’ll just have to…forgive me for saying it…wait and see.

i wonder what sort of vaccuum WoW would leave behind if it accidentally destroys itself

That’s honestly a good question. WoW’s been more or less the ‘king’ of MMOs, though with its decline, the other notable ones like Old Republic and Guild Wars may compete to take its place should it end up actually dying.

the only big remaining MMOs that aren’t Korean as far as I know are FFXIV, SWTOR, and GW2, but some companies might be convinced that they could fill the vaccuum that remains in the abscence of WoW and make a new one, although with the way the industry is now I doubt they’d make anything that wasn’t filled with horrific microtranscations

i’d have to go back to grinding and putting an unholy amount of time into warframe and i’ve been clean don’t make me go back dad

no god please anything but warframe once you farm what you like there’s nothing left to do
