When I pictured High Gnomes, I was thinking more like the ogres of Ogri’la. Like some gnomes hung out up there and played so much of the Simon dailies that they became enlightened spellcasters.

y’all know those leper gnomes stuffed in the basements of those warlock lounges and tailoring shops in silvermoon? they’ve breached containment, and merged their souls and bodies with their blood elf overlords. the resulting infusion of disease and fel energy has canceled out the corruption of their former forms, and resulted in the discovery of the High Gnome.
