That is possible as we don’t exactly know how they vanished from the surface although i’ve been hearing the beta doesn’t get an accurate world map because of spoilers, likely where this Arthai Kingdom will be. 
…possible that is why Kalimdor has so much extra space in the west coast.

The lore implications are the backside of Azeroth. Blizzard has been dropping hints about it for a bit with the Nightsquall stuff.

Humans came from the Vrykul, who came from the “Iron Vrykul,” who came from the Titans.
The humans who appear in TWW are a group from Arathi who, long ago, for some reason, were transported to that location and have been living there ever since.

Anyway, the orcs are also the descendants of Titanic constructs warped by unrestrained life essence, so they’re obviously equally environmentally unfriendly (have you seen Orgrimmar?).
We’d have to somehow get through the huge, presumably magical storms that destroyed their previous fleet, so…

Technically, I guess.
Humans descended from Vrykul who were constructs that were infected with the Curse of Flesh by the Old Gods. So, it’s possible they were originally constructed underground.
Pretty sure the humans in Beta got transported there involutarily.
My shovel got put to good use that day.
Those guys underground are Half-Elves.
Humans are actually descended from creatures known as Fraggles
