So, after BFA and Shadowlands

I bet you’ll get your chance because they haven’t done anything but recycle characters and stories since Wrath.

After BFA and Shadowlands I no longer care about the story, and I don’t think WoW will ever get me to care about the story again.

Blizz has demonstrated that their writing is on the level of a bad comic book, with an emphasis on “fist-pumping moments” and cliffhangers instead of crafting any sort of coherent narrative. The writing has always been pretty bad, but it definitely got worse in BFA and SL.

And the funny thing is that WoW still has a lot of good quest writing. They make small stories that are compelling. But whenever it comes to the big, expansion-defining narratives, it’s usually the dumbest possible storyline.

And it worked, the tone was dark, the story went further into an evolution in WoW.

But what happened? what happens in dragonflight? Do you think you are repeating the SAME…EEE story as Shadowlands?

That is the problem, the lore is not to be trusted, the lore is not really the same emotion as other games.

Apologies for the rant but you asked sooooo
Ya wanna know why I hated it?? Because Sylvanas kept prattling on an screaming MUH FREEDOM an damned Arthas for his actions he BARELY had any control over, THEN the worst part SHE DOES EXACTLY WHAT ARTHAS DOES OF HER OWN FREE WILL.
Despite all her bravado an arrogance about choice an freedom, THEN the writers do the absolute stupidest thing ever an make her a total muppet/puppet an instead of her fighting with us does what Arthas did.
Arthas could be redeemable for SOME of his actions as he was barely in control after taking up the sword an Helm. However she did it like a rampaging toddler completely unredeemedable AND knowing what the jailer plans to do. It wasnt like she wasnt aware she actively chose to be a dick.

The problem with shadowlands is it throws all the lore out disrespectfully an says LOL it was all my master plan THATS ZOVAAL this mega mind 10000 IQ shirtless fake free the nipple version of Satan.

It was hot garbage, an to top it all off the forced MANDATORY grinds an MORE ridiculous legendary items that arent even legendary in any form just felt like epics with orange paint.

Game mechanics:
Torghast hot garbage was fun until it stopped being fun and a chore to get my items(big gripe for many) I hate mandatory currency for making items, if ur gona make me craft or build a legendary having it predicated on potential drop chance AWFUL. Make it a quest or several OR like our Artifact weapons enjoyable with different appearances(WITHOUT the currency grind or artifact power currency grind).

TERRIBLE catch up mechanics until catalyst it was god awful leveling another toon thru that disgusting boring story. Even with the skips that got added a small saving grace.
The zones: honestly about the only plus I could give this they were gorgeous(opinion mine).
Class balance: I mean this is an overall fault stuffed with ELF/Druid flavored lore an power imbalance. Night fae until much later was horrendously stronger then literally every other Cov for many specs.
Paladins until later were almost hard locked to Divine toll with some niche mention of Venthry Hallowed ground for Hpally/protpally (Broken as well way too strong).

Overall 5/10 the main boss was a let down all the raids were mid tier nothing stood out, an all the bosses very bland uninspired copy pasta /yawn.
O ya an somehow laughably all the main Characters are total bumbling idiots who somehow are all weaker then Sylvanas despite the contrary. Looking at you Bolvar dude talks smack at every turn yet gets bodied like 5 times by Sylvanas.
I expected nothing from Baine an to noones surprise he did nothin useful, he was a side rescue quest so Thrall could find an axe.
Jaina arguably one of the strongest of them since Bolvar choked (Darksied tripping down stairs choked).

OO OO an fans literal favorites UTHER AN ARTHAS get such a disrespectful and terrible conclusion HES A WISP BARELY, no total spit in the face of fans. There was no winning after we won just more garbage tossed in our faces.

Dragonflight is a crapped over dumbed down made by inept writers and designers version of what could be WoW in the Dawn of the Aspects era. That simple.

What is the problem ? The lore that existed in WoW was made by people who were interested in IT, not in themselves and their own vanity projects.

The people who wrote the story used in WoW up to WotLK were people who were amazed their small project became such a big deal, and tried their best to make IT SHINE, not themselves.

The self congratulatory videos about the subpar work this team makes is a wonder. There is no way they dont know all they are saying is garbage. Even if the work in itself is not entirely garbage, what they say about it is.

The one good about that is FF keeps old zones relevant. I did like the inner stories of Bfa.

I can’t say anything anymore, each time it limits me to what I know in the new expansion.

Let’s just hope 10.1 and 10.2 end well and not end there before 10.3 or beyond before a next expansion like they did with WoD and Shadowlands.

And believe me that it seems that the company does not need a bad expansion to do the same and leave an expansion on hold and with little time before the new one continues, it is really disappointing how now the AAAs have lost their soul.

BFA and Shadowlands did more harm than good to the overall story of Warcraft.

You needn’t read quest texts to understand how disappointing both the Jailer and Sylvanas were as “main expansion villains” when compared to the likes of Arthas, Garrosh, Illidan, and Sargeras. People will remember who Arthas, Illidan, Garrosh, and even Sargeras, thus they remember the story they were apart of, but no one will remember who the Jailer was or what role Sylvanas had in Shadowlands’ story.

It’s mostly just rose-colored glasses.

Nobody can tell me with a straight face that Illidan’s story arc in BC was anything approaching “good”. What little story was even there.

Even the supposed pinnacle of WoW storytelling, Arthas and WotLK, mostly involved him being a cartoon villain just barely letting us get away every few hours, then letting us trash his entire citadel and army so he could make the perfect fighting force just for - oops! - Tirion to show up and literally deux ex machina the whole plan.

Really miss the world this game used to be, and the characters that used to grace its lore.

The best way to have a new compelling story is to stop leaning on the past. warcraft 3 lore has been milked dry. Time to kill of some leaders and think up some new stuff.

I’m afraid that’s where you’re wrong. Here I shall explain to you in detail why the lore is bad and will always be bad because of badowlands. clears throat

Nipples.

The social agenda stuff they’re doing doesn’t really fit well. It’s revamping high fantasy norms and we’re not exactly there yet. Not without someone creating a mind-blowing story to fit it all.

So as long as they’re pushing agendas, I don’t think the story can ever really recover. It’s going to be one agenda after the other. Not that I care really. The story was never really all that amazing in the first place. WCIII and all the books is where it’s at.

I don’t think he’s playing.

If Danuser is still in charge, no. If he gets pushed out because of Metzen, maybe.

danuser vs metzen mak’gora wen?

I like the small stories in expacs. The ones where you go town to town and talk to the npcs & they give you stuff to do & tell you why it needs to be done.

A lot of those are really cool.

The overall big story though, it becomes disjointed for me to the point where I lose interest. I think it’s because it takes so long to tell it.

So far what I understand is that dracthry just woke up and because we’re on their home turf, we meet them.

Then there’s 2 dragons, Alex & Ras, who are fighting with much soap opera-ish drama to it.
Apparently Ras wants to destroy all the titans but doesn’t seem to realize that Azeroth is itself a titan and that’s where I stopped paying attention.

So yeah, it is what it is. I still like the game and am hoping that if the story doesn’t ever get good that it can at least get so goofy it becomes hilarious.

Illidan didn’t have a story arc in BC. Illidan had nearly no story in BC. All his story came from Warcraft 3 which people still fondly remember. Yet even without a story… his still more memorable than a recent expansion.

Illidan’s shortcomings were a big reasons why Arthas was pushed more into player’s faces, as said in the Warcraft Bible, to reinforce the fact he was the main big bad. However, Illidan still remains one of the most memorable characters in part due to his boss fight, even though he wasn’t the final boss of the expansion, his legendary warglaives which are still desired and admired by all, and his part in Warcraft 3.

There’s a mountain of quests which suggests Arthas wasn’t so black and white during the events of WotLK. Arthas still struggled with an inner conflict, a fact which could be seen in quests like the find his heart after he cast it aside to try and destroy what little humanity he still held onto. More evidence to this fact could be seen after completing the Shadowmourne questline which rewarded the player with extra dialogue with Uther, Jaina, and Muradin.

Yeah it is fixable.

People forget how bad TBC’s story was. Illidan was just randomly made a villain and we killed him, despite him being a somewhat reasonable hero against Arthas in War3.

Vashj as well- she wasn’t really evil, we just killed her because reasons.

They later retconned Illidan (and undead Vashj) back into the story years later, so they knew their mistake in killing off important lore characters too quickly.

All they really have to do, is explain away the gigantic loopholes in the lore, even if it makes Sylvanas and the Jailer look like utter idiots (which they are) instead of the masterminds they pretended to be.

I mean, we even see similar writing in DF- Why did they (Alexstraza) leave the primordials alive if they were just gonna break out and kill us all anyways? If they can’t see reason, just kill them. The dragons are quite bad in their decision-making, and now we mortals are cleaning it up.

Blizzard just needs to make these major lore characters just as capable as messing up as we are, it humanizes them as well.

Wow’s story was never really good.
In most cases they use corruption. It allows them to very easily switch a good character to an evil one. For corruption no deep and meaningful character development is needed and they play it out as being oh so tragic while in reality it is just a cheap way of getting more bosses in the game. They used this method countless times and it is boring and predictable af.
Don’t even get me started on that horrible Sylvanas cra* or the Jailer. Not to mention all the plot holes and retcons.

I would say however that the lore in this game had some decent moments. bfa and shadowlands however made me loose any interest whatsoever.
