As the title implies, we’re going to play with some speculation here.
As we all know, WoW is being pruned of a lot of material, and it’s looking like the game is heading in a dull direction. What really started me wondering about how far this trend will penetrate was the new removal of the term “greenskins” from the script. What happens when we remove evil things from the game, like racism and cruelty? How far will Blizzard go in this direction? Doesn’t this also remove points of tension from the game, and make the story less compelling?
Also, if we remove racism, should we remove the slaughter of innocents? Should we remove necromancy because it defiles the sanctity of the deceased? How does Blizzard determine where to draw the line between what stays and what goes, and what keeps that line from moving to consume and erase all unethical speech or behavior from the game?
We’re not on the slippery slope we’ve already crashed into a glacier and now the glacier is melted we’re drowning underwater. They won’t stop, they’ve seemed to have hired people who spend 10 hours a day on Twitter to look through the game and find anything and everything that might “offend” someone and remove/change it.
Slippery slope is a fallacy, and you pretty much argued about something that doesn’t happen, which make the discussion itself pointless.
You call it a slope, but it’s really more of a plateau.
I’ve seen you on every single thread related to this issue shilling hard for Blizzard and pretending that removing content isn’t a problem. Enlighten us: what do you possibly get out of this?
It’s a more than reasonable point that you seem to constantly ignore - if they’re going to remove content, why stop at jokes? Why not remove all violence from the game?
Yes, the slippery slope logical fallacy is a fallacy. If I were posting to say, “Blizzard is definitely going to go on to remove violence because they removed innuendo and racism,” I would be guilty of that. However, I’m just curious because it’s becoming clear that Blizzard is not confining itself to pruning only sexual material from the game. Since the range of targeted material is expanding, it’s logical to question how much more that range will expand.
Just don’t remove it from the general discussion forum. Wouldn’t be the same without somebody necroing a year old thread ![]()
Probably because we’re going on 5 years of Blizzard occasionally toning down some vulgarity/non-player sexuality while leaving the violence untouched. Hell, they even went and threw in a case of attempted genocide in the middle of it.
No question mark needed, we are already on the slope sliding down
You can just kiss all of the game goodbye, except murder because murder is ok just don’t hurt anyones feels.
They dont care about game racism, the same way they dont care about game genocide, the same way they dont care about in game anything. BECAUSE IT IS A GAME.
What they are removing are the references that break with that and bring real life issues to the game.
It is that simple.
We are past the slippery slope, things will keep being removed at random.
Actually…A slope, or incline, doesn’t necessarily have to be at such an angle for things to happen rapidly. Some things happen over time, and to such a degree as to seem almost imperceptible.
However, with the case of the team at Blizzard…this is not so. There are plenty examples of things being removed, that the only logical expectation is for more things to be removed, so as to fit the reason for the removals in the first place.
Hence, a slippery slope. There is no way of arguing that this can’t happen. Years ago, if you mentioned that Blizzard would remove emotes, flirts, paintings in game, and character lines…People would have said no way it could, or would, happen.
Well it has. Thus, the slippery slope, all of which HAS happened since the publication of the lawsuit and behavior of some of the original designers. That’s like hating on the VW beetle because Hitler’s regime developed it.
Hating on the product because of the faults of the creator doesn’t make the product bad, and removing, or adding in, options doesn’t necessarily make the product better, especially if it’s solely designed to detract from the creators.
They could slippery slope into removing Jaina and putting someone less inconstant and a little bit more true to the role she is in.
No way someone as powerful, as hardened by her life, would be a childish rag like she is.
ONe day she is all mushy with Thrall, the other day she is all honor, the other day she is all “dismantle the HOrde”, then she is all “Oh heavens, oh life, oh suffering”.
That is what we dont need in the game.
So far, the entire reason why the Max line in Un’Goro and the Johnny Awesome line in Hillsbrad were so funny are gone. If I ever quest through those zones (I have a lot of characters, most are 50+), I will simply burn through them like I do everything else.
Nothing interesting or special about them anymore.
Buckle up we’re sliding down that slippery slope! Keep your arms and feet inside the vehicle at all times!
The Wow Devs seem determined to keep removing things from the game and I dont think they’ve realized exactly what they’re implying with some of these in the current Cleansing.
How delusional do you have to be to actually think this? arguing that some small thing is going to lead to larger unintended consequences isn’t a fallacy.
Luckily we’re not on a slippery slope. We’re just in an outright free fall until we hit rock bottom
I have mixed feelings here.
It is a necro, true.
BUt they did successfully use the search feature and possibly didn’t make thread 212 on the matter so it has that going for it.
I predict the new bad person of 10 will be suave, non vulgar villain. Like sire D. and wow 11…wow 12. I liked Sire D…but this template copied over and over might not bode well, imo.
Even good writing can’t keep giving this and work. As much as I like dexter (the serial killer one, not the kid evil genius lol) I’d say that show went 1 season too long. Maybe 2.
Cool non vulgar upstanding citizen sociopath versus cool headed non vulgar sociopath. got old. even with their good writers.
I like the Jimmy Smits part. So we got us a psycho for a change (what I viewed Jimmy Smits as). Well cool…After him, lets wrap it up. Nope…we got a few nice sociopaths. Got stale to me.
As far as they want I suppose, because they’re doing it for us.
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
― C. S. Lewis
(edit: They’re also robber barons. But… I don’t think it occurred to Mr. Lewis that a little girl might say “Why Not Both” in a gif image)
