Six states restricting type of gaming computers

Consoom less power guys, we need that electricity to pump out crappy remakes of Disney movies.

I mean maybe we should call up future generations and see if destroying the planet was worth it.

every small minor inconvenience is just the world’s biggest problem.

sure you can. all of the things regarding power consumption are just consumer guidelines and aren’t legally binding. again, your power company has no way of knowing which appliances in your home are drawing what level of current. the only thing that is legally binding are the manufacturer specifications for power draw for certain components, and even this is targeted to reduce power consumption for devices at idle.

It is regulation, clear as day. Those caught would be investigated, along with where the hardware was sourced from. If sourced from a company under California jurisdiction, the company would be fined for breaking regulation. If snuck past customs it would be labeled the same as contraband - yes the individual would be punished, thrown into prison for trying to see ray-traced Darkshire at the expense of California’s energy grid.

Police!

That better be weed in your trunk sir!

Future generations will still blame all of us no matter how hard we tried.

And if you want to make a difference, computers don’t do anything compared to the many corporations that get a free pass to pollute.

OK, so misinformation aside. You can absolutely buy a gaming computer in all of those states. The main difference is that prebuilts in certain classes have to meet minimum power efficiency requirements. None of which apply to computers with discrete GPUs, or personal built computers. That would violate federal law and the commerce clause.

FWIW this has already been covered extensively:

and it promises to actually help your gaming computer too in the long run.

Hard to find articles but from one I did find… This is actually from the 26th, yesterday.

Computer manufacturer Dell will no longer be shipping high-end Alienware gaming PCS to liberal-controlled states such as California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont or Washington due to new restrictions on “energy efficiency” implemented in July 2021. California will begin banning “computers with high-speed networking capability, multi-screen notebooks, notebooks with cyclical behavior, and monitors with high refresh rates” in December.

Prospective buyers perusing the selection of Dell PCs on the Alienware website were greeted with the following [stipulation attached to higher-end listings]“This product cannot be shipped to the states of California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont or Washington due to power consumption

I remember about 20 years ago Al Gore peddling carbon credits.

Basically I drive a 74 Chevy Blazer, I can buy carbon credits that legally set my carbon footprint from my Blazer at 0. Which also means as a friend of mine found out, he can IGNORE emissions standards such as in Massachusetts where there is an inspection that includes emissions testing.

here’s a helpful hint for life: when you see a headline that talks about “Blue States”, you’re about to read some garbage

Better yet, better title: “I don’t believe in science! The constant need for people like OP to ignore reality and the changing climate around them”

If only you’ve put so much energy on protesting the government founded pollution as you spend misinterpreting others…

You mean like how the government has been giving funding to fossil fuels while cutting/restricting funding to renewable energies for years…yeah I have protested that too. I like how you put in meaning to things you read based on your illogical perception.

Like saying that high power computers somehow are actually damaging?

Normally I’d agree.

But components are expensive right now.

How much energy is wasted with air conditioning in CA, or heating in CO? Compared to those, gaming PCs are just a tiny drop in the bucket. Try restricting thermostats to only allow AC when the INSIDE temp reaches 78, or the furnace when the INSIDE temp dips to 65. Doing that would save so much more energy… but they won’t do that.

Instead of coming up with a solution that applies to a large portion of the population, we again target only the “1%” who who have something fancy. We apply restrictions on them that will have such a small impact that it will be practically immeasurable.

Here’s another option that would help make a significant impact: make solar panels a requirement on all new construction / renovations across the entire nation. Put more funds into researching more cost effective / efficient PV cells and reduce our dependence on grid based power.

Not as much as you’d think… we have fairly mild winters, and fairly strict insulation requirements. I know I’m breaking the code by admitting this to someone out of state… but it’s true.

But you still should believe we’re a snowy wasteland and you should never move here.

how about they ban air conditioning instead.
