Since I am currently sick as a dog (with my body rotating between a churning stomach, a ringing head, a stuffy nose/sore throat, and nausea every 5-10 seconds), and since everyone at my workplace is stuck inside the American Nightmare, and since I have just called in sick…LET’S TALK!
I’ll open this show and say the following:
I’m about ready to take my overtime pay from my paycheck this week and tell a certain manager to shove off after his display of extreme arrogance yesterday. What do I mean? Well, while me and almost everyone else at the theater I work at was suffering from the dictionary definition of the American Nightmare (as in, we were severely overwhelmed, majorly dehydrated, angry, and in fear after a coworker reported that an assistant manager allegedly plans to fire several people after a disappointing performance by all on Friday…and that no one is safe, even brand new hires)…a manager was spotted in casual clothes talking to 2 workers and saying “This is going to be an easy weekend for us.” Are you kidding me? Are you freaking kidding me? Do you know what movie was released on Friday? And have you even taken a glance at the workers in the next room over as they try to handle a hundred different orders WHILE those workers are dehydrated and hating their life?
Suffice to say, I did not get to clock off til 3:30 in the morning. I then headed home and tried to get some restful sleep…only to wake up feeling miserable, and after tossing and turning while suffering from a nightmare…which involved the working the same shift last night while the following song was blasting from all the loudspeakers in the theater at full blast:
Suffice to say, if things do not improve, there will be shouting matches/fighting amongst employees/managers by the end of this weekend.
That is all. Your turn to discuss. GO!

If you think working at a theater is hard work, you have another thing coming for you in most other work places. Just saying.

I feel for you. Hope you get better. Shoot i hope you get a raise too!
Not really WoW related, but feel better.
I encourage you and your coworkers to always stay hydrated. Even if it means asking the customer for a moment. I’ve done this many times and I don’t think I ever recieved a snippy remark from them. Granted this was at a Candy Store where are customers and employees are the sweetest.

Avoid any decisions until you are healthier. Being ill can have effects on your thought process due to sheer exertion.

Agreed
It’s the dragon effect as you keep working up the ladder. Sometimes working hard physically isn’t the same as working hard physically WHILE working your brain with it.
My advice is to be the best “you” you can possibly be. For when the time comes when you fail ( we all do) at least you can say you give it your all!

Except this theater is a restaurant, brewery, and theater all rolled into one. The theater I work at isn’t your typical theater.
It is still just basic customer service, and I doubt you are working in all areas each day. You may be cross trained to swap between jobs on different days, but I would bet that you work in no more than two most of your week.

that actually sounds like a blast…
hope you feel better soon, and thank-you for staying home and keeping your lurgy away from others… sharing isn’t always caring

If this is a serious thread, I suggest plenty of slow hydration maybe some Gateraide or other high in electrolyte drink. My guess is your suffering of a combination of dehydration and stress. Get some fluids in ya and relax and you should be feeling better by the end of the day. Well could be longer depending on how severely dehydrated you got but still. But please remember to drink it SLOW. Too fast and it will only result in massive stomache craps that could lead to things that would cause you to lose hydration.
Stay safe.

Up until about 2 months ago I spent the 6 months prior working about 1000km away from my home in the middle of the woods with very poor internet/cell reception working about 70-80 hour work weeks 7 days a week. We would go home for 6 days every 21 and then fly back out again (pretty typical turn around cycle). It can honestly always be worse (like when I was doing that but in the arctic circle in the winter in -50).
Sometimes I have dreams about quitting my job and doing something easy like being a cashier at a gas station like I did when I was 16, being out of town for weeks/months at a time working 12+ hour days sucks pretty bad (as in you have absolutely no social life and are tired all the time). But I always seem to get dragged back in.
Also about the hydration thing, keep a water bottle with you behind the counter (most places have a little shelf or something under the register). It’s against the law to prevent employees from drinking water
Idk, I worked at a McDonald’s for 6 years, including a few years as a shift manager, before getting my current job as a cable guy which I’ve been doing for ten years now. My current job is less stressful, more enjoyable, pays better, AND gives better benefits than the fast food job did (which itself probably wasn’t that different from a movie theater), so imo some jobs are just plain bad no matter what your attitude or work ethic is.

The OP could be at my old job I worked at for nine years.
A Rope Factory
The building, during the summer, is like 120 degrees.
The owner will not turn on the AC because it costs too much to run.
To save money, the owner does not buy just regular equipment for
his workers to run. He buys cheap broken down crap that he has
his mechanics “fix”, so it can be used. Same with materials used to
make ropes and twines. He buys crap that no other company wants,
and expects top quality rope and twine from it.
You better make your quota. The crappy machines breaking, or the
crappy cheap material screwing machines up, is no excuse.
Dont make your quota? You get written up.
It wasnt always as bad as this. When I started it was a good place to
work. Full of friends and some good times.
There’s going to be a big wake up call for a lot of people. I somewhat enjoy the posts on this forum where everyone screams about fairness, equality, and the general rage posts. The real world is going to be pure devastation and chaos.
I’m definitely the guy who wants to watch the world burn.

Watching the world burn is much more entertaining when you are watching people come to the realization that the world is much bigger than them and that they mean nothing in the grand scheme of things

I work at an Amazon Delivery Station Warehouse and it’s been crazy busy this week from Prime Day (It was Prime week for us). We sweat all shift (no AC or breeze in the warehouse) and many associates do not handle the heat well, however our work environment is kind and motivating. We all help each other out. We have people doing water bottle runs passing water out to all. We have electrolyte freezepops and Gatorades as well that we’ve been passing out all week. If someone doesn’t look well, we make them go on break.
Reading your post OP, it sounds like your work environment is separating management and workers. It is not the managers that accomplish goals but it also isn’t just the workers make goals happen either. It’s a team effort. As the saying goes, teamwork makes the dream work.
I have some questions for you:
1.) Has anyone talked to management about the situation of dehydration of the employees and do they have a solution to help?
2.) Is the music allowed to be turned down or changed? Also, are you getting headaches from the music or are you just annoyed at the repeating song?
3.) Is the rumor about employees getting fired true or did someone just say that to work everyone up? Is it possible to get a confirmation?
4.) Do you take in enough electrolytes (like Gatorade)? Last week I had a muscle spasm which was like a knot bump on my leg so I went to the doctor. I was suffering from dehydration. My doctor recommended me to take magnesium before bed for a week and it’s seriously helping my nerves. Before taking the magnesium, I would pull my leg muscles a lot and omg that hurt a lot.
5.) When you say “hating their life” do you mean working at the theater in general or just the situation? A lot of people hate their jobs because a lot of jobs suck. If you go into work every day thinking “I hate this”, maybe try something to make it enjoyable or look at things from a different prospective? You only live for a short time, there’s no reason to hate every day at work. Be creative as much as you can, and as always, be kind to others as well. Please remember that even your managers are employees of the company, just like you’re an employee of the company. Listen to their side and tell your side and come to a medium.
I hope this is somewhat helpful!
Hey there, Liger. Allow me to answer your questions, in order:
1: After a coworker (who quit a week ago due to finding a better paying job at your place) was sent home with dehydration sickness, one of the managers made the Front-of-House department take mandatory water breaks every couple hours and encouraged the Heart-of-House department (which is the department I work in) to do the same. It lasted about 2 weeks before those water breaks were shut down due to the fact the number of bodies taking mandatory water breaks were causing the drink bar to get congested, which hampered our ability to get drinks to customers quickly. Suffice to say, after seeing myself and several others drop like flies due to a combination of heat exhaustion from the extreme heat dome hanging over the Midwest and extreme stress, I am about to talk to my manager and ask the management to consider bringing back those mandatory water breaks…even if it means asking people to use the break room (which is now thankfully finished being built).
2: I’m not sure what you’re reading, but I said that I fell asleep and had a nightmare featuring that repeated song at full blast. In reality, we don’t have music in the kitchen (and thank God…half the songs the FOH uses as the playlist for the bar out front have to be edited for explicit lyrics, which of course means sometimes the whole message of the verse/chorus in question is lost).
3: At this point, I’m not sure if the manager in question is actually planning to fire employees, or if he’s doing that because he’s angry and stressed out yesterday handling Lion King. I do know, however, that the manager in question considered everyone’s performance unacceptable (even though most of us did not get the chance to go on break due to how busy it got with Lion King release…and most of those that did go on break are the same people who are calling in “sick” (read: pissed off cos of how they and their fellow employees were treated by management yesterday, so they see I called in sick and do the same thing to try and get back at management).
4: I am doing my best to make sure I replenish my body while I take today off to recover. Don’t worry, I keep some Gatorade on hand for moments like this.
5: Just the situation. Lion King release was yesterday, and despite resting as many workers as they could to prepare for this weekend, the crowd size not only surpassed Toy Story 4 opening weekend, it was ranking just below Avengers: Endgame in terms of how busy it got…and right after Avengers: Endgame opening weekend (which happened a few weeks before I was hired), half of the HOH department and a good chunk of the FOH department quit…and we still haven’t recovered from that mass exodus of workers. I always try and keep a good attitude at work (I even try and lighten the mood of other workers when I can)…but the rest of the workers, they treat each other (and myself) like a freak. It seems we have a growing competition over who can anger who…using increasingly annoying and sometimes unsafe tactics.
Thanks for your help.

Ugg…Being subjected not only to nasty human interactions you are also being exposed to most likely bad air quality with intense air conditioning plus extreme noise. This in-turn can run you down both physically and mentality. . Working in such a stressed environment , Is it really worth the effort to continue ? or seek new a job… Like maybe you should beat them to the punch and quit.
