It’s quite simple actually. When using a tank specific rune your dps is lowered by X amount to players. does not affect PvE. Solved it
or they could make the tank defensive stuff not affect pvp.
to nerf pve though feels stupid.
just the simple fact in pvp people can directly stop you from doing your goals and in pve you are really only competing with numbers and not really able to be stopped other than by really bad raid members .
but whatever.
This argument ignores a fundamental mechanic of tanking—holding threat requires dealing damage. If a tank can’t generate enough damage, they lose threat, making them ineffective.
In Season of Discovery, players are pumping out massive damage numbers, meaning tanks have to scale accordingly. If Shamans—or any tank—are not doing substantial damage, they wont be able to keep threat against DPS pushing insane numbers. Their damage isn’t about competing with pure DPS—it’s about ensuring mobs don’t turn and annihilate healers or lower-threat DPS.
Suggesting that tanks should only “survive” and hold threat without damage completely disregards how WoW’s aggro mechanics work. In PvE, a tank’s threat directly scales with damage dealt, and reducing that too much would make encounters unplayable.
They can still reduce the overall damage of every tank but increase the threat they gain aswell. Tanks do not need to be doing alot of damage
Well your argument completely misunderstands how Shaman tanking works. Unlike traditional tanks that rely on raw mitigation and passive threat generation, Shaman tanks generate threat through damage, meaning a flat damage reduction would cripple their ability to hold aggro.
If Blizzard were to reduce tank damage but artificially increase threat, it wouldn’t work for Shamans because their entire threat system revolves around their damage output. You can’t just slap a flat threat buff onto Shaman tanks and expect them to function properly. Their kit was built around scaling damage, and reducing that would destroy their tanking viability.
Again, they can just increase the amount of threat generated per attack, tanks do not need to be doing so much damage
I am fine with them nerfing tank damage, but this directly impacted Ele, which was not necessary and just a lazy change.
the only reason youre asking for this change is because of pvp.
be honest.
btw cutting their damage and boosting their aggro wouldnt be preferrable as they would have to err on the side of being super sticky on aggro and go overboard with it or risk the chance of a shaman tank not being able to hold aggro at all.
its alot trickier to balance than just flat % cuts and % threat boosts.
if you get what you want shaman tanks will be able to lightly breathe on a mob and hold it from someone calling the mobs mom all sorts of names while kicking the mob in the nads and barely blink an eye.
you clearly dont care about the pve implications.
The idea that blizzard
and allow Shaman tanks to do less damage completely misses the mark on how Shaman tanking is designed. Unlike traditional tanks that can rely more on mitigation and passive threat generation, Shamans fundamentally generate their threat through their damage output. In our current environment—where DPS numbers are through the roof—you need to dish out high damage just to hold aggro; otherwise, mobs swing their focus to the DPS or healers. Reducing their damage while simply boosting threat would cripple their ability to control enemies in raids and make encounters unplayable.
Moreover, this argument seems driven by PvP frustrations rather than genuine PvE balance concerns. Shaman tanks might shine in PvP because their kit translates well there, but that doesn’t mean it’s a viable solution in PvE. The suggestion ignores real encounter mechanics—threat is inherently linked to damage output, and artificially inflating it ignores the delicate balance of class design. Instead of tampering with the fundamental tanking mechanics, if the concern is over PvP dominance, then that should be addressed separately from PvE tuning.
So, if you think reducing shaman tank damage and hoping a flat threat boost can substitute for proper design, maybe you should try tanking with a sponge… wouldn’t that be a real game-changer?
just make the shaman tank runes not work in pvp.
or reduce the effect defense has on pvp combat.
either one would work.
Elemental is currently one of the top 3 dps in the new raid so you’re out of your mind.
That was prior to the MASSIVE nerf that was added today.
" * For players to adjust to the set bonus change, the Naxxramas Tier vendor for Shamans will now offer an exchange from the Enhancement Tier to the Tank Tier. This is a one-way exchange and will no longer be available after April 28."
So what about Ele, which the nerf impacts more?
They didn’t even OFFER this change to paladins which I find to be absurd. Just more proof that paladins aren’t cared for and shaman are given special treatment.
Did you have to get ret or holy T3 (as in the previous max tier) pieces as tank? And are now completely wasted?
Didnt think so…
How is that special legendary for you btw?
Yes, we did. We had to rely on T2 ret set for multiple phases and got no consideration when the nerfs went out. And it’s harder to get older content gear replaced than what people are actively running.
Went from being required to run tank to being extremely weak and a liability and we got no replacement options offered. But ya know, you’re biased for shaman so you don’t care.
Tanks don’t use 2handers so ya know, doesn’t matter. Cry about it. Go soak your head in a toilet.
i mean what you said mightve been fair if you diddnt get the other gear while you could but, we got the offering of being able to switch the gear but they only gave tank tier as an option.
not great for the ele players and even with your old sets at least they were still geared and statted for the role you were using it for.
just asking for them to allow us to get ele tier as the tank set is near useless for those who were using it as ele.
This last phase pally tank bis required 2 pieces of Tier 2 ret, both of which could be acquired with reals. Serious comparison there… And it was nerfed, not completely unusable. Try again.
Already resorting to petty insults? We are done here.
I would have appreciated the prot paladins that got hit by the drive by nerfs to ret being offered tank tier. I’ve never gotten another piece of pants because there was never a reason to because you always wanted 2 piece Tier 2 forever effectively.
It makes sense since tanks would only want the dps gear for set bonus and would be at a disadvantage having it not stated for them.
doesnt get rid of the elemental problem .
plenty of both specs were using it.
shaman arent a monolith.
honestly some heads up for you guys wouldve been great but we all have 20/20 hindsight and it wasnt offered.
now would be a chance to learn from the mistake and at least not make it again.
sorry that you guys had to deal with the mistake in the first place though.
looks like hammer of righteous got some good buffs though . hope that feels good for yall.
