Shadow Priest Rework in 10.1

#1 dps spec in raiding? Lol what? our boss damage is mid. Our overall damage is only high because of massive pulls on adds, which arguably doesn’t matter at all.

Rework does not mean buffs. Literally no one is complaining about or asking for more dps.

Our spec was literally unfinished on launch because blizz ran out of time, and you can feel it in how the spec plays and how incoherent the tree is.

  • Our rotation is a button bloated mess
  • We’re reliant on a non-hasted 30s cd ground targeted slow traveling spell to apply dots in aoe (and we do not do good damage without our dots)
  • our spec tree has several useless talents which basically means there is one “right” path to every node and you have to take mind spike always
  • several talents that you’d think would change your gameplay but don’t because there’s better buttons to press
  • spec tree includes 4 utility nodes
  • incredibly dull passive capstone talents that don’t change your gameplay at all
  • two cooldowns that don’t significantly differ from one another other than one 1 min and one is 2min
  • so so many bugs!

That is just the spec side. Priest in general:

  • is the only class in the game without a class-wide kick (and the one shadow gets is on a horrendously long cd unless you want to spend 2 talent points)
  • immobile and lacks fast/displacement movement and is the only class in the game that evoker’s movement ability cdr affects a button that moves someone else not us
  • generally lacks utility desireable in pve outside of a few niche situations
  • utility we do get has target caps or other caveats that no other class gets on similar spells

Also, i’m not the first one to say please go ahead and remove PI if that is what is stopping us from getting other meaningful utility. It’s not like we usually get credit for the extra dps from anyone anyway, and it can make things super toxic for us in groups.

Also stop looking at overall logs from raider io as a measure of “best in raid.” We’re not.

Yep. Shadow talents are a joke. Tons of meme ones like “VT has a chance to generate 1 (one) insanity” Like seriously blizz?

brain dead players thinking high dps due to an op talent and niche utility makes you good design

 the inexperience, it’s surreal.

our whole design got cut short because they ran out of time. no wonder we’re getting reworked, they’re trying to fix our 20th incomplete redesign

Yeah, guy, damage to bosses is mid. Stay mad girl.

None of this even matters because this rework isn’t for our damage. Have a nice life dude.

Somebody get this guy some Preparation H.

I would summarize shadow’s spec fantasy as three things. Ghosts, Tentacles, and Lasers. Make the kit do more of the first two without getting rid of or neutering MF:I and we’re good.

VE and DA both suck and I hate them. Also add a talent named after Xal’atath.

And dear god, fix the bugs.

WOW!

ITS ALMOST LIKE WE HAVE 8 DIFFERENT COOLDOWN BUTTONS AS ARCANE MAGES (evocation w/ siphon storm, rune of power, radiant spark, touch of the magi, mana gem, arcane surge, temporal warp, shifting power) ALONG WITH 11BASE SECONDS OF SETUP (Evocation = 6 seconds, RoP = 1.5 seconds, Radiant Spark = 1.5 seconds, Arcane Surge = 2.5 seconds) BEFORE WE DO ANY DAMAGE, AND WE HAVE TO KEEP UP A NEW 12 SECOND DoT THAT LITERALLY NO ONE WANTED OUT OF A BURST SPEC LIKE ARCANE (nether tempest),

BUT PLEASE, TELL ME MORE ABOUT HOW YOUR SPEC HAS BUTTON BLOAT

I SO WANT TO HEAR ABOUT “WAAAAAAAAH I HAVE 3 DoTs TO PRESS AS A DOT CLASS BLIZZARD PLEASE CATER TO MY EVERY WHIM WAAAAAH”

Arcane is reliant on 45 second-based cooldowns with literally 0 damage outside of that. Any mechanic that happens in there = you damage is gone. We are also stuck to the floor because of RoP

lmfao
go on the mage tree right now and look at the Rigid Ice, Improved Frost nova, Winter’s Protection), accumulative shielding and mass polymorph talents.

so like Orb barrage and reverberate and cascading power (2 of those are capstones btw)

Arcane has 6: Foresight, Chrono shift, Supernova, Improved Prismatic barrier, Mana adept and Slipstream.

Only 1 of our capstone changes our gameplay in an incredibly awful way, which is Siphon storm and requires us to have 6 seconds of channeling prior to every single burst window.

See above, we have 8 redundant cooldowns.

There is a bug that has been here since I started playing in Shadowlands which makes it seem like you have a Clearcasting proc when you don’t, causing you to waste a cast in a potential burst window which can net a ~10% DPS loss.

I’m SOOOOOOOOOO glad you shared your opinion about how your spec got LESS dev time than a spec like Survival hunter, who literally had a 3 point node in beta that increased range of auto attacks by 1/2/3 yards and became the laughing stock for a bad tree on Max’s stream.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR OPINION GOD I LOVE THE FORUM’S OPINIONS

You know that shadow getting reworked and arcane needing reworked isn’t a one or the other situation, just one at a time seemingly.

I blame Arcane being dogwater to play on the people who just oh sooo looooved Radiant Spark in SL and praised it to the extent Blizzard carried it over. Congrats, now your spec lives and dies with how effective your stupid covenant spell is.

and SURELY a spec like shadow needs a rework BEFORE survival hunter, ele shaman or arcane.

SURELY

yes, blizzard has decided so, and so it is.

Yes, actually, because enhancement and elemental don’t actually need reworks. No clue about SV, but the 2 shaman specs do not need a rework at all, they’re fine as is. Maybe a few capstone redesigns, at best, I’d guess, but a full blown rework no. Shadow does, Affliction does(or should), Guardian does, and judging by your other post I’d say Arcane def does, then. Ret did, too and is getting it. I’d rather they all fix all of these and rework these specs together at the same time for 10.1.

I’m also of the opinion that this game literally has too much burst, too little sustained damage, and too much damage rotated into CDs with people/classes/specs being way too reliant on CD windows and should actually have the damage burst full on toned down from this game. This isn’t Diablo or an ARPG where there’s nothing but fireworks, this is an MMORPG and they should not be 100% burst oriented but more geared towards sustained profiles, sustained damage and every spec should be grouped into a few different niches with raid designs and dungeon designs specifically for certain niches.

I legit agree, ret deserved it.

Hilarious thing is I rerolled arcane mage for a while after shelving my spriest for raid. I’m sorry that you don’t like arcane’s gameplay or that it’s ramp is difficult to pull off or that it has a couple bugs, but that’s not a valid reason for shadow to not get a rework or mean it doesn’t have serious gameplay and talent issues. That is “if I have to suffer so do you” mentality, which is both unkind and unproductive.

Sounds like what you really want is arcane changes, so I recommend shouting in the mage forum instead of spewing hate at priests getting something you want. Jealousy is not a good look, and neither is ignorance.

I actually enjoyed learning arcane and felt it has a fairly straightforward ramp/rotation, even if it’s long and hard to pull off during heavy mechanics. The good news is fire and frost are both viable now so you can play those instead. Spriest doesn’t have that choice unless we want to heal.

And if you actually believe spriest has more utility than mage in pve, I don’t know what to tell you except you’re dead wrong or a very very bad troll.

Deep breaths. Go outside and go on a walk. I promise you’ll feel better.

Spriests deserve some love after three expansions of unfinished redesigns.

Still not a reason for shadow priest to not get a rework.

And like… if dps in raid is your measure of needing a rework or not, arcane was legitimately the top range spec for mythic vault progress by miles for the first part of the expansion. So by your logic, I guess you’re fine?

I hope they give holy priests a bit of a touch up.

A good start would be to put smite into a holy fire school of magic so we have something to cast when countered out of our holy school.

Another idea is to add a talent near empyreal blaze that makes smite castable while moving for holy only.

You know situations when having full stacks of MB and surge while having Mindgames up and max insanity isnt suppose to be normal and healthy gameplay, its just ppl are used to the chaos as oppose to the chaos being a good design choice. Shadow’s rotation feels like whack a mole and insanity resource feels like a meme because its nothing you actually have to think about.

Yes it needs a rework but its more of a trust issue as oppose to the question of if shadow needs a rework or not.
