Alpha of a UI element is how visible it is, in terms of brightness. 100% alpha is completely opaque, 50% alpha is half-see-through, 0% alpha is invisible.
So, with the default UI, can you make “hidden bars,” where you have a bar smack-dab in the middle of your screen, on which you drop abilities and make keybinds, then fade out that bar and make it non-clickable.
So, like for keybinds that you don’t need to see, so you lose 0% screen real-estate.
I don’t want to get into some silly “which is better” discussion. I think calling this an obsession is a bit too much. But you do you.
i haven’t tried it, but i don’t see why not.
i don’t know why you’d want it in the middle of your screen AND hidden.
if it’s hidden, it doesn’t matter where it is.
you can set your bars to hide.
when there were multiple mentions of it, it sure seemed a bit over the top.
the op just wanted to know where the stock standard numbers went.

I just came back to let you know that numbers are possible with the stock UI.
When I went to Darkmoon, I was getting numbers while playing the carny games.
I was going to do some testing to try and find out which option this is listed under with the UI, but I didn’t want to waste time while my XP buff was ticking down. 
I’ll try to remember to take a look tomorrow (i’ll do the games before getting the xp buff, they don’t give xp anyway.)
…but it can be done.
if there is no stand-alone option for it, it may just take the numbers from your primary bar.
Have you changed any of the standard 1 through 9 bindings?
