So I really love villain rp and I mostly have stuck to criminals, void, and the occasional fel related evil characters. Though recently been thinking about the light and how cool it would be to make an evil light based character. Some big inspiration was the Arathi from the Priory dungeon in TWW, however I feel like there’s not enough background lore on the Arathi to make that work as well as I’d like for a villain.
The Scarlet Crusade however is very interesting for a group of light users. Especially how there’s several interesting different groups. Like the ironically undead Scarlet Crusaders and even the Scarlet Onslaught that had Raven Priests and Death Knights while still following the light.
I just wanna say however that I do know there’s a bad reputation for Scarlet RP with people acting a certain type of way, and what not.
Kinda curious though what people think and how to do Scarlet RP right. I kinda want to do a human priest because there’s some really nice cloth/priest mogs that fit the color and I also have a human death knight that could have been one of those death knights created by the Scarlet Onslaught, which could be interesting.
Sadly a lot (not all) but a lot of Scarlet Crusade RP draws in a lot of racists, which is what I have found on Moon Guard at least. I believe there is only one Scarlet Guild which I can’t remember the name of which is never ICLY in Stormwind and are off doing things outside of the city.

Scarlet RP is genuinely interesting. However, most Scarlet Crusade RP guilds end up being filled with people who are also OOC racists, and always end up in some weird drama beside that. Just stay away for your own sake, tbh
So, half the time you’re going to be hounded by performative tumblr weirdos due to OOC bleedover - assumption being you’re rping out a racist power fantasy.
This assumption however isn’t entirely unwarranted as there have been genuinely racist ding dongs rping their scarlets like the evil mustache man army.
I personally don’t mind scarlet RP - but it has to be done correctly and if you’re not looking for OOC baggage to juggle, then it probably isn’t your cup of tea.
As an add on- I do think the current rp community isn’t mature enough to deal with IC fantasy racism - despite warcraft originally being about a race war between orcs and humans.
Its either OOC bleedover from crashouts, or genuine bad actors with genuinely racist beliefs OOC taking advantage of that rp now.
The state of the world IRL has kind of poisoned the well.
I think you’re doing RP right so long as you’re having fun and not hurting yourself or others. A scarlet crusade raven priest would be really spooky. You could even have a cute raven / shadow raven pet.
Well-managed conflict makes for amazing stories.
It depends on what you want to do on your Scarlet. There’s not really a ‘right’ way to RP. But there are ways to RP where you may get more interaction compared to others or speedrun to ignore lists like a plethora of other Scarlet Rpers.
If you are the type to RP in private circles, away from the public eye then roll, find your group and go, or join that one good Scarlet villain guild that bans its members from being IC in Stormwind.
If you are the type to want to walk around in Stormwind City and see who washes up, then it gets really touch and go.
My personal experience in the wild west that is SW City in a list:
- Most folks are willing to engage a Scarlet that’s in disguise. Being in disguise tells everyone that you the player know Scarlets are villains and for the most part most folks are willing to buy your story and give you engagement. Just don’t be silly and give yourself away unless you’re ready for consequences.
…But it sounds like you want to roll a villain Scarlet for the fancy red mog, which means you want to walk around in that fancy red mog so….

The tabard makes or breaks. Most folks are willing to engage in RP if your character is NOT wearing the Scarlet tabard and just ‘think’ you are Arathi, and you get engagement that way. Just don’t be silly and give yourself away or get ready for conflict.

If you really want to walk around in full blown mog + open tabard + TRP saying “SCARLET HIGHLORD/Inquisitor/something” and go full villain in the middle of Stormwind City then it comes down to what you say in the rest of your TRP.
a) OOC with a note that says “I welcome conflict” will get you aggro. But more than likely it will be harassment/conflict more than likely leading to attack emotes.
b) OOC note saying you “refuse all hostlity” usually gets you ignored.
c) Gigantic note in your ‘About’ section saying how Stormwind accepts Scarlets because <reason here, mandatory Crowley mention> but you’re still RPing a human supremacist villain type will usually get you ignored as well.
I’m brushing over the “I’m a good Scarlet/here to redeem the Scarlet Symbol so I MUST be in full uniform and you’re a villain if you attack me” types since you said you want to RP a villain. (Don’t do this either people hate this).
Honestly if you just want to ‘roll a human priest because mog looks cool"‘ and you want to look cool in it in public? A much more harassment-free alternative is to just say your character is either Stromgarde or Arathi.
Someone paid by the kingdom of Stormwind to go undercover and pretend to be an open scarlet so as to lure other scarlets out… but they slowly find themselves becoming what they pretend to be. That would be such a haunting character concept omg. like 80% haunted.
I wish there were an easier way for people that would benefit from these groups to find each other easier.
One of the main groups I know is The Scarlet Conclave. They’ve been around for a long time, first on WRA, and then made their way. Its a tight knit group who 100% keep the Scarlets in game and know how to play a wonderful group of villains. So if you ever wanted folks to RP with, or want to throw ideas by, they’d be your local experts. I’d throw them a line.
Just don’t play like Laverna does and you’re already 900% a better Scarlet RPer than they are
In reality, Scarlets are very difficult as discussed by others around here, but generally so long as you make it more interesting than “I’m a Good Scarlet No really!” or “Literally the most blasé Paladin that’s a Scarlet so that makes me interesting!” and you’ll do fine.
Ephie’s thing is 100% a good way to do it, and would be a very good concept for a fall from grace character
Well giving scarlets were trolling in Stormwind only just yesterday, not accepting any consequences and god modding.. I think if you end up in a good scarlet guild it would surprise me. Then again that was Scarlet Vigil.
There was literally people there crashing out and telling people to abuse mass reports on them. I wasn’t there IC so I couldn’t observe the godmodding if it did happen - but there is clearly a problem of OOC bleedover and crash-outs on both sides.
This isn’t just scarlets being bad; it’s people being immature in general.

but it looks like thisThis is unfortunate to hear. Any tool given to players to protect themselves from malicious behaviour will always be used maliciously. At the same time, the more tools individuals have the more they can protect themselves.
I wonder if a two-way block would be a good solution, so that people you’ve blocked can’t even see what you’re typing or your character or anything.
I want to preface my opinion on RPing a Scarlet Crusader with a single word.
Don’t.
Not because you can’t, but because I’ve always felt like this faction should’ve stopped existing after vanilla. I’m going to die on the hill that without the overwhelming core tragedy that what should have been a coterie of the greatest defenders of Azeroth was subverted and corrupted by the Legion they are nothing more than an inexplicably present enemy group.
What are the Scarlets, if they aren’t people who intended good things and were slowly lead to a path of increasingly extreme sacrifices in the promise of an ever looming greater good? What is their purpose if not to showcase the utter insidious genius of the Legion that even people that should be their greatest opponents on a world can be handily warped into a tool for their ends?
If you want to play a “moral” Scarlet Crusader, play an Argent Crusader who identifies specifically with the Argent Dawn as that was their stated origin and still actually is. No fussing with retcons necessary. If you want to play one to be a bad guy, then you’ve already pretty much missed the point of the faction unless you want to play Balnazzar Junior and spend three years making every RPer around you become a worse person.
It is a faction that, to me, should’ve stopped existing years ago and is only being used because it’s cheaper to keep re-using a faction over and over if you’re Blizzard. If you’re an RPer, you just retroactively claim that they’re actually really mean and evil turboracist human supremacists or something to justify hating them.
Speaking from experience, it’s just not worth it. On one side, you get the craziest most unhinged players with a persecution complex, on the other you get people who lump you in with people like kormed or the scarlet vigil.
furthermore, people will send you death threats and try and Dox you. It was those death threats that ultimately lead to the scarlet guild I was a part of being disbanded, it just isn’t worth the time and effort.
Most, if not all, of these “problems” with Scarlet RPers are not limited to only Scarlets. So I beg the real question here:
Is it Scarlet RPers, or just RPers as a whole?
Night Elf RPers (guilds) have been the worst I’ve seen; once they get started, it’s quite disturbing. Maybe that scene has changed since I dipped from it ages ago.
I just wanted to point out that only mentioning these problems in the frame of Scarlets is a bit unfair because these ‘problems’ are not isolated to that niche.
If you really want to RP a Scarlet, do you, just don’t expect people to kowtow to you, and if you do something idiotic, take the consequences. It’s your Subscription I couldn’t care less if you want to be a Scarlet or High King General of Stormwind Cathedral District’s 7th Legion.
This is a fair point to be brought up, but I have to disagree as it is a matter of optics and scale. Scarlets occupy a niche that, unfortunately, has it be seen as a justified extreme movement to some and an irredeemable malevolent tumor to others. They are an inherently polarizing group because of the sheer depth of retcons and overwriting that has occurred specifically to them when the basis of who and what they are has always been steeped in “can you put together the truth in the middle.”
To be possibly self-congratulatory? Most RPers can’t. So they default to the extremes and it leads to these extreme reactions.
The problems aren’t isolated to the Scarlets, certainly, but they do manifest with a unique intensity in regards to them.
