You’re right. Let me see if I can make that happen.
That’s actually a pretty cool idea. The thread looks fantastic!
Thanks very much
How does that look guys? Does the emblem work there?
Still waiting. Still hoping.
I like it.
Quick thought:
Wouldn’t it be more lore-compliant to just have a Vampyr Class, or something along those lines? I’m kind of warming up to the idea of San’layn, but they’re by far not the only references to vampirism in WoW. Troll Blood Drinkers come to mind.
I would love that but I think it would be less likely than San’layn.
Alright so this is going to be a long response, sorry, but you did spark some thought that I want to get down here for sure.
I think the vampyr class idea is very neat, but we’d need to make it distinct from the Blood Spec on DK (which indeed is just runic magic, and not true blood like blood mage would use). Whereas San’layn are a bunch of different classes, as we’ve seen in ICC–I think the blood curse works like a version of the worgen curse, to be honest, but without the life magic. In fact… we really don’t know the origin of it. I love the idea of a vampyr class and I’m going to touch on something you made me think of in a later paragraph (bear with me).
So in regards to what you said, you’re entirely right. I jumped on San’layn personally and put all this work in because personally, I think that the San’layn lore is the most interesting to me. However, like you said, the blood curse does indeed extend to other races–and we see other instances of blood magic in its raw form (not runes like a blood DK) via other races. Here’s a list:
- Blood Elves, obviously, via San’layn
- Vry’kul, an interesting development really
- By extension, humans
- I don’t know if Blood Trolls are ‘vampyr’ and have the blood curse, but I think it’s a reasonable assumption.
What do we know about Vrykul and humans? They were originally titan creations, with the curse of flesh. What else are titan creations on Azeroth? Gnomes & Dwarves… hm. That’s interesting (also leads me to wonder if either of them can be afflicted by the worgen curse, I find it weird that humans can but those two can’t since essentially humans, gnomes, and dwarves came from the same origin… the titans.) What else are titan creations? Well, technically orcs, but on another planet (they were pebbles from a rock back on Draenor that a titan created to combat the Everbloom). I am unsure if this qualifies them at all.
Now, what do we know about Blood Elves? Well, they’re mutated trolls. So unless the mutation somehow opens them up specifically to these sorts of things, we can assume that maybe even Night Elves(of whom also can be worgen!) and trolls can also be affected by the Blood Curse, therefore having the ability to turn into vampyr.
So… honestly, the possibilities here are endless. From just the information we know, most of the races can possibly be a vampyr until we’re told otherwise or learn more about it. I see vast similarities between this blood curse and the worgen curse (which is really ironic).
I was thinking, if the realms are endless and most/all races can be vampyr, another cool thing they could do would be something extremely in depth but possible for Death Knight players. Something like greenfire, where you seek out the origin of the blood curse, and gain new cosmetic spells along with appearances (red eyes and fangs, for example.) Then, your spells (if you so choose to activate it) would take upon the look of mostly blood and splatters. I think that this could explore the lore behind this entire blood curse. It would have to be really complicated though and a new thing, but honestly really cool. Essentially a new… “class state”, “hero state”, “monster state”, or something. We’ve seen that cosmetics can be earned in game (it’s just basics right now, but they could extend this) via the Night Warrior questline for Night Elves. What if they indeed make a big… thing out of this by combining greenfire and Night Warrior for a DK variant? I think it would be super cool, and I wouldn’t mind this.
Then, looking at worgen. Right now, only the human variant is playable, but it’s speculated that Night elf worgen could eventually be a thing. If they do ever add in something like that, it’d be another cursed race. If San’layn do get added, and have the ability to be multiple classes, other variants of races afflicted by the blood curse also can be added, like humans (or if they ever add them, Vrykul).
I think both the worgen curse and vampyr curse being explored could be something neat, and again, endless possibilities.
A class just seems like an odd way to go…however something along those lines…I’d really like to see a Necromancer class and perhaps go the Paladin/Priest route…you could sort of mirror spec names…unholy would be all about summoning undead and such. Perhaps frost would be more about spells and blood could be a blood mage spec, perhaps even revolving around healing, draining and granting and such.
Other than the blood spec, I could see something whipped up quite easily using the Warlock as a base to build off of.
Then with Fallynn mentioning the green fire…I still think doing a visual retheme of certain classes for certain races would be a fun idea.
Perhaps if you’re playing a San’layn and choose mage, then instead of Arcane (or maybe fire?) they have a Bloodmage spec, basically all the same abilities, just renamed and visually rethemed to be blood based for sake of easy balance. Kind of the allied race idea pushed to a class/spec.
Void Elf/Undead paladins? Sure, but instead of the light, everything is void themed.
Then with the mention of Vrykul, it’s interesting to note that originally all Vrykul were meant to be vampyrs. Hence the “kul” part of name. Basically Viking Draculas. At some point the vampire idea was dropped but they kept the name.
I’ve thought if they went the route of a third undead based faction that Blood trolls and orcs (there was that cult of blood wielding orcs on Draenor) would be a nice addition…as would those skeletal trolls…those are neat looking.
I’d love playable Vrykul though.
I’ve noticed something extremely interesting though when it comes to Vry’kul–on Island Expeditions, tons are using many types of Blood Magic spells. It would be super neat if they were all vampires though, I hope they do expand upon Lucard and his group of the 'kul.
@Vaelian @Fallynn
I think I remember someone saying that Vrykul literally translates to Blood Drinker in norwegen or something like that.
Also the name of Blood-Thane Lucard, the Vampire Vrykul backwards is Dracul.
I was hoping that the addition of the new Vrykul island which looked to have a town could be used along with Stormheim in recruiting them to one of the factions.
I’d not been paying attention too much to the spells they’re using. I’ll have to watch more.
@Drede Yeah the Dracula Alucard thing has become fairly common, I know it’s used in a variety of anime and then Castlevania has Dracula as Vlad Tepes and then his son is named Alucard. I want another season…
Felt like Vlad had a bit of a different depiction, and I quite liked it.
Found this in reference to possible name origin…
“The name vrykul might come from the Greek equivalent of the vampire, the vrykolakas (from the Slavic vǎrkolak ). (The vrykul were originally supposed to be vampiric in nature, this aspect was later seperated and implemented as the [Darkfallen]”
…You two look like twins right now, sorry, I had to say it, haha that’s awesome. Anyway carry on.
That’s because he has really good taste in armor.
So basically the Vrykul where going to be the Lich King’s replacement Vampires for the Dread Lords but they decided to use Elves instead.
Neat. Makes me wonder what could have been.
This moment is burned into my soul.
Yeah, it’s kinda like how that expansion had three ideas for classes. Death Knight, Runecaster, and Necromancer…they kinda took ideas from all of them to make the current Death Knight.
WC3 intro…nice, that does look a lot like our armor.
I also like how much it looks like the foot soldier armor from the movie.
I’m been thinking about leveling up a human paladin to use with this armor but I’m a little undecided on the name…I’ve got Tyrion reserved.
Up till this point I’d been wearing the Draenei paladin armor from Warlords that was sort of a remake of the set from BC.
TBH I am glad they used elves for the vampires rather than humans, humans have claim to so much already, plus the whole “blood elf” joke that Arthas seemed to be playing on them by making them ‘real blood elves’
I’d prefer if many of the darker things weren’t treaded on by Humans, vrykul are fine though and close enough especially since the curse originated with them. Whenever humans grab a hold of a theme of another race they typically grab the spotlight too since Blizzard seems to favour them over the rest.
Yeah and something about the typical elf aesthetic just seems to really work well with the whole vampire thing. Often shown as being regal and such which makes for a nice contrast with the feral feeding bit.
In the Castlevania series, the vampire characters could easily be made over into elf characters, think they even had pointed ears.
Plus there’s a viking one lol.
MMM yes Castelvania certainly is full of juicy vampires. The San’layn also move away from the “poncy elves afraid to break a nail” theme that people stamp onto Thalassian elves as a whole, they’re the complete opposite of that while still maintaining a civilized and high-borne aesthetic.
I agree entirely. It was disappointing about Godbrand when [spoilers] but meh, he’s a really neat character. Funny anyway.
YES that’s a very good point, I love that.
