Yes, actually, I did without learning either language. I could see a sign in Spanish and knew it was in Spanish. (I grew up in the US)
I looked at my French textbook in high school and did not once think “Wow, that looks like Spanish!”
It’s ignorance, and lack of care to think about it.

I can’t say much more than hello in both languages and I can easily tell them apart when they are being typed/written.

I’m from Québec, i ran into this issue often.
Back in the Openraid days i would lead my own SoO raids and i was downvoted there due to my accent. It was also an issue with some people i used to do arena with, specially random pugs who’d immediately use that to insult me if they messed up (shoutout to that one OCE Warrior who called me a mexican after leaping behind a pillar with no trinket versus an RMP who still had smoke bomb back in WoD lol).
Still i wouldn’t let that get to you, there’s plenty of good people who play this game that won’t care in the slightest if english isn’t your first language.

Alright, I’ll give you this one only because it is a bit silly to say mixing those two up isn’t common or heard of. I think it’s fair to say the person was still racist and dumb, but mixing those two up is fine.
Absolutely not. If you can’t see the difference, that’s absolutely fine. Not everyone is a linguist and shouldn’t be shamed for making a common mistake. Kicking someone for it though, that’s just wrong, xenophobic, and absolutely deserves to be called out.
I mean, I guess for all context of the conversation my mom DID tell me those signs were in Spanish when I was a toddler, so I just instinctively knew from some knowledge.

Glad we agree. Apologies if I came off as high-n-mighty, I just get overly passionate about certain things.
I mean, that is two of many reasons why Pugging just doesn’t work out the majority of the time. Clearly for the person in this situation, being an ignorant racist dummy was more important than having an extra person to get the content done. Which is just insane to me.

I meant more that there was a vibe going on that if you didnt recognize the difference in French/Spanish you were apathetic/lazy. When really there was barely anything to recognize.
He was a jerk. I just felt like he did enough to honestly call him out, with out throwing in some collateral damage that may hit others.
Someone else reading this who is ignorant about french/spanish for whatever reason, could just be a lack of exposure. Could now feel a bit defensive about interacting with people who speak it going forward.

I could not fathom kicking someone for a guild name, especially because it was in a different language. If you do the fights right, you’re chill, and you’ve got the score/ilvl, then you’re good in my book.
It’s crazy to me how some bass ackwards people can be.
yeah there is some kind of cringe level people every where…no matter where you look. But online, they show their true colors. really stinks, sorry you had to go thru that.

Personally, I would love to learn other languages, as it would make communication so much better between everyone. Afraid my old brain wouldn’t absorb it tho, I know a weeeee bit of Spanish…and always wish I knew more.

If, like me, you grew up in Texas you get exposed to a lot of Spanish on the regular. At least, unless you make a specific, concerted effort not to recognize Spanish. Most people around here could look at the phrase “Légion Du Québec” and say to themselves, “That’s not Spanish.”

Yeah, that is typically written by someone who lives inside a very self designed kind of box/chamber and is fearful of new horizons or just new things in general. Seeing another language is soooo terrifying! 
Maybe 5-10% of the WoW community are horrible people. But these days thats about the same number in the general population.
I dont think we have a disproportionate percentage…I think it just shows up more because we actively try to interact with others in game…where I can just ignore the obnoxios in real life by not talking to them…walking or driving in the other direction. Im not tryin to group with the body snatching pods in real life, lol.
Doesnt surprise me. bigots and racists are all around, including in this game.
But they are a minority of human beings for the most part.
