“Runecloth Wrappings damage increased when casting Arcane Blast, Fireball, and Frostbolt while Invisible reduced to 500% (was 2000%). Obtainable 3 times (was 10).”
Like the title says… this is not a nerf it’s pure annihilation of that anima power. I am the first to admit it was ridiculously powerful but it was rare enough that by the time you got two stacks of it (which is what is necessary to one or two shot a boss) you could only maybe use it on the final floor guardian and the boss. Yes, it essentially invalidated the boss encounters at the end which felt odd and anticlimactic but mages already take so much longer to clear a Torghast run than other classes that the time commitment was essentially the same. Furthermore, there is absolutely no reason to “balance” Torghast at all, let alone at a time when the actual game (raid and M+) is horribly unbalanced.
Consider this: Torghast layers with a torment that increases the health of mobs, including floor guardians and the final boss, was already stacked so high that even at layer 6 with 3 Runecloth Wrappings pre nerf (6,000% damage increase) it was not possible to one shot the boss though it came pretty close if it was a crit. Right now the most you can get is a 1,500% increase and that’s if you manage to get a whopping 3 bindings… at layer 8 that won’t even take off a fifth of the boss’ health even if it crits.
It’s not saying much that this was already one of the most gimmicky anima powers in the game and yet it was the only truly good one for mages. And they still went ahead and brutally nerfed it… I am not seeing mages being able to solo Torghast without a huge time commitment this week and that feels absolutely awful and contrary to what Blizzard promised going into this expansion.
The very least they could do it revert the nerf to 1,000% and remove the 3 cap.

I’m massively disappointed in the Runecloth Wrappings update. To me, it’s yet another clear indicator that Blizz has zero interest in developing “fun” gameplay alternatives and instead is purely focused on metrics, namely those that force more gameplay time.
Out of the many attempts I’ve made of Torghast at this point, only ONCE did I ever get more than 1 set of Runecloth Wrappings. Once. And even then, I only saw it a few times when clearing Layers 1-3; since starting on 4+, I’ve only seen it twice, again, out of many runs.
This nerf was wholly unnecessary and honestly, is kind of shocking that it was even a focus when so much else of actual proper gameplay is so broken.
I mean, ffs, we’re already seeing a massive trend of Frost and Arcane Mages getting shunned in M+ and Raid content because Blizz can’t balance their bloody math, yet they have to take the time to nerf “bonus” content?
That’s just the height of stupidity.
Edit: Fixing types and, well, want to apologize to folks in general; I don’t like being vitriolic, but a lot of the changes of late are proving to be massively frustrating.

Yeah, those were the only reason I could complete level 5 on my undergeared mage. Hopefully I’ve obtained enough gear to kill it out right…

I can see why Blizzard nerfed Runecloth Wrappings. It invalidated boss encounters, which clearly wasn’t intended. I expected it to be nerfed.
That said, I think this nerf may make Torghast unsoloable by mages at higher ranks.

I never got more than 1… I could only imagine what stacking it would look like. I just might be done with Torghast completely, its not fun or worth the time.

Yeah, I totally get why they did it but they overdid it and by A LOT. Also the only result of the change will be to annoy people and make them take longer to do something that, at best, was already a tedious chore. There was nothing “fun” in Torghast, except for one shotting the bosses, lol.
Aww that made torghast so much fun. My last run I got a 3 stack of it for 6000% dmg and just one shot the boss on lvl 4. All they had to do was allow it to only have 1 stack if they really wanted to balance things instead if nerfing it into the ground. Well I completed all the wings once so I guess I’m probably done for good.

It’s getting harder and harder to defend Shadowlands. I am not even one month in and I am about to call it quits.

Well, I was getting 3 wrappings 4 of 5 runs, and twice I got 4. But I always run in a group, which increases what you see I suppose. I hit the boss for 1.2 million and kill layer 6 in an avg of 7 seconds. I fully expected this nerf, but damn if they took away the only fun part of shadowlands. I was volunteering to run Torghast for friends and guildies all the time. Now, probably not.
Strangely enough runecloth wrappings is still at 2000% damage today even though all the other changes are there. Just 1 shot the layer 7 boss for 1 million damage.
I had 3x old Runecloth Wrappings but I forgot to try to kill The Tarragrue
For real!? I better get down there ASAP then before they realize!

I knew they’d nerf it eventually, but imo its still 100% worth taking for Arcane mage. It wont 1-shot bosses any more, but I could still see people pumping out 100k+ damage at the start of the fight with proper setup.
All this and no one noticed that the other fireball power was buffed.
Breaking vases is now persistent. Had my fireball up to 250% yesterday
Plus the flame strike power is still there. You can get that hit over 3000% pretty easily
Runecloth nerf does suck yes, but we weren’t supposed to be one shotting bosses on layer 6

The tooltip says 2000% but it’s not doing the 2000% damage. I was so excited for it last night…
I still one shot the layer 7 boss with the nerfed runecloth wrappings (if it is true that it is just the tooltip that says 2000%). I had Runecloth Wrappings x3 and Seeker’s Scroll. In fact I actually overkilled the boss by like 600k damage.
I think the nerf wasn’t intended to prevent us from one shotting the boss but rather prevent it from being super easy with the buffed Seeker’s Scroll.

The nerf is noticeable but it still helped me on the layer 8 final boss Synod who has 750K+ health even with only one runecloth wrappings. No one shot nuke. This fight took for a couple minutes with him getting to 10 stacks. I couldn’t have done it without it since my other anima powers being only so so. Any power that buffs damage I recommend because you have to beat the enrage timer. I also suggest looking into powers like the increased 30% damage to your main school after you cast your two other schools, Spellcaster’s Mojo I think it’s called, if you happen to choose that anima as well.
Seeker Scroll is horrible though: “ Seeker’s Scroll now always increases the damage of your Fireball, Frostbolt, and Arcane Blast (was only your next cast). Fireball, Frostbolt, and Arcane Blast damage per stack reduced to 2% (was 10%). Stacks 100 times. Obtainable 1 time (was 10).”
Unless you get it on floor 1 at a 2% per stack you will never be able to break enough urns to get anywhere close to maxing it out. Remember, you can’t go back to previous floors once you move on to the next. And buying it from the anima vendor on the last floor is practically a waste of fantasma.
I got it midway through floor 2 and maxed it out. But how is it horrible even if you don’t max it out? Even if you only get 50 stacks because you got it late it would still be a 100% damage boost to Arcane Blast. Which is still really really good.
