I thought about getting the RTX 3080, but decided to just upgrade my 2500K to a 5900X with 32gb of DDR4 RAM @ 3600MHz.
I will be still rocking my 970 video card, I will probably end up snatching a 3070 or a comparable card from AMD if they are competitive.
Yeah, absolutely the right move.
2500k is really dated at this point and pairing it with a 3080 or something similar is not really a good idea
Agreed. I have a couple of family PCs. Both with i5 2500k CPUs and GTX 970s. The game runs great. Would definitely get more bang for the buck with CPU upgrades. And honestly, it’s worth it just for improvements in motherboard chipsets and connections.
For WoW, the budget from alone 3080 ($800) is better spent modernizing the whole system from an i5-2500 - and a modest GPU like a 5600 XT or something even fits in that budget.

AIBs have leaked the new Radeon 6800XT is faster and cheaper than the RTX 3080 in everything except ray tracing. No one’s seen a top end Radeon yet.
I’d hold off on buying a new card if you can wait. From the rumor mill Nvidia is looking to counter with either a price drop or a high SM count card.

might not translate to real games. but that said, i still have very high hopes

AIBs reported 6800 is faster in most games than a 3080 (or at least most games AMD told them to test). Synthetics the 6800 won across the board but you’re right who knows that that means across all games.
Also let’s not forget the 6800’s RDNA2 is a brand new arch and will be full of driver issues at first. The 3080 is far more mature iteration from other Nvidia cards and might be a much smoother experience from day 1.
We’ll have to see when the cards come out though. Fun times, let’s see who lowers their prices 1st.

i’m stoked, personally.
I think perhaps the leaks might be true, if indeed Nvidia has pulled the plug on the 20gb models. Maybe those aren’t enough. Maybe nvidia needs something stronger to bite back.
