Roleplaying a priest

This should be a racial.

That’s the first step. :eyes:

OT:

Priest can be roleplayed in several ways. You can be a field medic, a traveling healer, a war healer or someone that understands both energies are opposite of the same and use both as balance, typical Yin Yang stuff.

The airborne goblin priest that exorcises dozers in that one Azshara quest cracks me up every time.

Airborne Goblin Priest says: Praise to the Light, brother ! Let’s take a look here…
Airborne Goblin Priest says: Well, there’s your problem! You have what we call a ghost in the machine.
Airborne Goblin Priest says: This calls for an old-fashioned bulldozer exorcism! Give me a hand if she gets uppity, will ya?

<Clubnik’s Dozer becomes enraged!>
Airborne Goblin Priest says: Whoa! We got a live one here!
Airborne Goblin Priest says: I cast you out! Unclean spirit - Begone!
Airborne Goblin Priest says: The power of the tools compel you! The power of the tools compel you!

<After beating the machine “senseless”>
Airborne Goblin Priest says: Terrific! That went down nice and clean.
Airborne Goblin Priest says: Let Clubnik know that the priesthood will be sending him a bill. For the Light!

You say that like it’s a bad thing!

You don’t have to RP both. A lot of people don’t particularly like Shadow/Void for RP terms, but here’s my take, if you intend to incorporate both:

Worshippers of the Light (referring specifically to humans, as your character is) tend to be empathetic people. They see pain and suffering and feel a sense of injustice and want to reduce that suffering.

In real life, you see some kid suffering from cancer and you just wish you could do something to make their life better. Capture that empathy and that’s what led you to the Light.

But then you get in your car to go to work, and you sit in traffic for two hours, get cut off three times, and cursed out by one of said people who cut you off. There are just too many trashy people, and you hate them, and wish you could cause the nasty ones suffering. There’s your Shadow.

There’s a duality to it. You simultaneously love and hate people. You want to reduce suffering, but then you see ignorance / injustice / cruelty, and equally want to hurt people.

For what it’s worth, to me the Light is a peculiar entity. ‘In normal doses’, it seems benevolent and a champion for the weak. However, there appear to be instances when it burns too brightly. Xe’ra was one of the prime naaru yet had no reservations about forcing Illidan to become something other than he was. Bishop Farthing and Archbishop Benedictus were both part of the Cathedral of Light yet were deeply involved with Twilight’s Hammer. Another such example of the Light’s aspect is the Scarlet Crusade.

For my priests, following the light means an internal struggle perhaps like the conflict between the two sides of the Force. The more power you wield (i.e., the higher level you get), the more this conflict manifests itself. It’s my perception that Holy Priests are most susceptible as their light will burn out sooner and they are less likely to follow the Light in moderation. Disc priests have a better balance between the two and shadow priests perhaps have the best understanding and resistance to the ‘dark’ side although this is not to say that they can’t be swayed by it.

My priests are governed by these concepts and I play them with this conflict in mind. The nelfs are a bit more complicated because of reverence to Elune. However, because of what happened with the tree and disappointment in the manifestation of the night warrior, my nelf priestesses are lost and will probably turn to a darker approach to the world.
