Just rewatched Neilyo 16 cata rogue video. Outside of MOP (not considering wotlk, tbc and mop) i dont think there was a better time for pvp and more particularly, sub rogue gameplay…
It was such an artform, so methodical, every action so commanding.
What i would give to have those days of rogue and pvp back…RIP.

You ready for those TBC arena rogues who don’t remember Combo Points stuck to their target? :DDDDD

Ahhh the good ol’ days!
Stop attack macro after Gouge, Hunter deadzone, warrior abilities stance locked, warlock shards/ranged weapon ammo in bags, etc.
Now you can restealth with full rows of dots on you and if you get brought out of stealth you still get your opener. Truly a 900 IQ class only capable of being played by supremely intelligent gentlemen.

I fought an outlaw rogue on my hunter yesterday and the dude was re-stealthing as I was attacking him. I get the conduit gives them a shield but wtf is going on where they can just drop combat in half a second now.

Yea the restealth conduit is silly but good rogues still require finesse in shadowlands.
I just miss the days dance wouldn’t warp you behind target and a lower cloak of shadows cd so you could use it offensively in rmp mirrors or not pillar hump versus caster cleaves while it’s down.
Cata rogue was infinitely more fun to play and I spent hours outside in elewyn forest perfecting it before grinding glad.

Game was actually fun back then. And you had the same gear as R1s outside of T2 weapons no matter your rank. Which is what pvp should be.
I’m legit just waiting 4 years till classic catches back up to wrath so I can enjoy this game again.

I miss wotlk music… def one of the best expansions but I didn’t like Tbc/wotlk for pve gear stacking late in the expansion. However the pvp was spicy as hell and dalaran is mvp on shared cities.
Honestly I have always disliked super late seasons in expansion as secondaries get absolutely bloated and some random shiny pve trinket or weapon gets abused in pvp. My favorite seasons def are season 1s while the arena is generally fast paced and shadowlands is no exception.

this? 7 minutes in and there’s been 2 games, most of the video is a rogue telling his team like reverse glossa every time he controls someone and barely ever peeling or even paying attention to what the other people do on the enemy team. i’m pretty sure i watched him get hardcast feared on his shadow dance.
this is your god?

Neilyo is one of the top rogues of all time lmao, anyone disputing this is mentally ill.
He changed the way arena was played and rogue as a class from his videos. People were inspired and improved so much due to his insights.

i’m sure the guy who first cut bread before people bought it was a visionary, is there anything special here that hasn’t become so standard that rivals do it

Its just a different time now. Way more information is available via twitch, youtube etc… He 100% paved the way for high level rogue pvp starting in vanilla all the way through Cata/MOP. Besides Reckful, yes Neilyo is the Rogue god of all time on NA… Pretty much universally agreed upon. Yes Rival Rogues and up today pretty much all play the same outside of minor positioning awareness, cooldown trading and overall team synergy. That doesnt take away from anything Neilyo or other top rogues of his time did. Modern day sub iterations just are not the same as they used to be.

Probably not, same as any game. But, the classes were more fun to play back then IMO.

fair nuf, guess i came in expecting something else
reckful videos or even some pserver players i’ve been shown actually put on clinics even by modern standards
original post in this light seems to be wishful for the days when rogue was just a god class where a good enough player could just be smart enough to never drop games to anything but other rogues. hit up nahj, he agrees with you

Yea I agree rogue was stronger in all other classes in Cata. I hard carried people to gladiator who never achieved it again. However Neilyo had plenty of videos that are alot better then this one mentioned above. Him and Reckful, and potentially Akiros were the rogues that paved the game knowledge of rogues now.
i mean the skill cap of rogue has lowered immensely regardless of how strong it was back then while nahj is notoriously biased that’s a pretty objective take
at least if we’re talking about cata iteration there is no marked for death, no universal combo points, no subterfuge, no multiple dance charges, no dance cd reduction, no on demand symbols energy regen, no double step charges
quite a different class then to how it plays since legion

The class was better in everyway though, especially on a damage component. The burst was lower than MA sure, but cata rogue had armor piercing PVE trinkets.
Merfy you’re clearly a better player than I based off your ratings but i can tell you from someone who has played rogue since vanilla, and witnessed every iteration of the class/specs that there was a massive skill ceiling that separated “just good enough” rogues from glad/R1 rogues. I’ve always been middle of the pack (tbc glad on emberstorm bgroup, 2100+ every expansion except wotlk- unfortunately was serving overseas at the time and got arena master in MOP. So maybe I’m exactly what you’re referring too? Either way, watching rogues like Neilyo and Reck, easily helped me achieve what I have in WOW and made me think outside the box of just tunneling gameplay and blowing cds right out the gates. Maybe that is every day gameplay these days but again, there wasn’t a whole lot of information out there during those days outside of WCM.
Summing up, yes i do miss the days where a “good enough” rogue could carry teams to 2k+. Most these days bring the class, not the player. Back then you clearly could see that starch difference between brining a player vs class.
i came in too hot, i owe you an apology op
it’s interesting to see where the modern game’s roots are, but i feel pretty strongly that the difference between how it is now and how it was then is not all or even mostly contained in class design. it’d shock me if the gameplay in this video or most of the other cata ones i’ve been linked is mimicked by classic cata when it releases in 8 years or whatever, i’m pretty sure it crutches on most enemy players playing by sense of smell
