Revising travel in the World of Warcraft

This new portal room situation got me to thinking. Is it time that we revise how travel in the World of Warcraft works?

Maybe each capital city should have a portal room with a portal to each Continent. Then once there is an Argus style portal for each “zone” on that continent. Then once within the zone, you can run out of the portal room/hut/pit and take a flight path within the zone?

Capital cities and continents, I will allow. But portaling between zones?
Hell, why not just make each zone an instance at that point? Part of the allure of WoW is the fact that it has the ability to feel like a world, yknow? Sure we’ve got flying and portals and all, but I’d rather not have that choice around.

Does taking a flight path impart the “world like” feel to you? It doesn’t to me so I never really considered it. I always just use that time to go get a drink or alt tab to post here or watch youtube.

Just no. A HELL no.

One of the points on the original World of Warcraft box promoted a “seamless” world. Adding a bunch of loading screens bogs things down.

Oh it does indeed. It’s a bit of time to view the world as you fly by - and though I may go read a book while I’m flying from Lor’danel to the Caverns of Time, I love to see the world passing by.

Do the Argus portals from McAree to Antorus have loading screens? I don’t seem to remember that but I could be wrong. Now I’ll have to go check, lol.

They do, gosh I always found it faster to just walk.

See here is where I can with confidence say nah I’ll just use my flying mount. I think flying myself is more fun than teleporting.

I find the portals useful for things like getting from the expansion I’m in to an auction house, or for quests that have you go back to old zones, like in Legion… Especially as Horde having to get to southern EK.

Would I take the boat or zep back and forth between them if I needed to - yeah. I think that’s kind makes the world feel bigger and more relevant.

Am I willing to do that just to grab a stack of mats or mana potions? Sounds like a pain in the rear.

I was thinking that each continents portal hub could have it’s own Auction House, Inn. Obviously many of these would be located in existing cities. But by using portals and flight paths in a step down fashion they would funnel more players into the same area.

Rather than 6 players all on different flight paths to say Drustvar and half afk and not interacting with anyone or the world. Players would be all dumped out together in an area and then have to interact further to complete the leg of their journey.

Plus if your goal was top speed you could just be there faster with no waiting.

I can definitely see how the loading screens thing could be an issue though for some. Both aesthetically and timewise for people who aren’t running on an SSD.

Each continent already has that.
We have Stormwind, Orgrimmar, Shatteath, Dalaran, The shrines in the vale, the cities on Ashran, Dalaran again, and now Boralus and Atal’Dazar. We’re kinda all set bud.

The first stage of that, yes. The zone portals instead of flight paths was the biggest proposed change.

Ah.
Now, I see why you want them, for farmers and people running old content, the allure is definetely there.
Perhaps we could have both, to satisfy the sticklers like me, and people like you?

Personally, I think there should be less instant travel in the game. Want to do a dungeon, then you must travel to the instance before you can queue for it. No portals to dungeons. You can only sign up for LFR by clicking the meeting stone. Same for Battlegrounds. Etc…

Obviously, I am not in the majority here.

Your sardonic wit is appreciated at times, I will give you that!

I think that’s a lovely idea. Get people back in the game, take out the portals!
See, though, there’s a good chunk of people who aren’t like us.
