Returning player undergeared for Midnight

I am a returning player after 8 years having left when Legion forced me into group content. I leveled up to 80 and started Midnight a few nights ago. The experience was fairly horrible as I was vastly under geared with an iLvl in the low to mid 70’s. I am led to believe that the Midnight intro is tuned for characters of iLvls over 100. If that is the case how does a returning player manage to hit 80 with gear that high without running group content which I choose not to do. Is there a catch up gear vendor or something? I’ll be repeating this process with a number of alts and I’m not nearly as good playing them as my main toon that had so much trouble. There has to be a better way, right? I hope. Thank you in advance for any help. And for the record I am loving being back.

The idea is not exactly that the experience is tuned for some specific ilevel; rather that the stats of the mobs scale down to your level and ilevel. The devs have this kinda right in most places, but I find at expansion breakpoints it can be pretty suspect.

Have you checked what’s available at the Auction House? The gear tends to be worthwhile in the first level or two of an expansion, so 71-72 and 81-82, but fades after that.

Sometimes I have resorted to checking Wowhead to find quests with decent gear for my weak slots.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve since gotten Gilak up to 83 and well geared enough to make questing feel smooth again. It’s a bit scary thinking that they thought things were scaled to my gear level but I did make it through although I don’t usually die four times in an expansion intro, or at least I didn’t 8 year ago. I’m glad I’m back. I’ll muddle through. Thanks for your time.

Currently, we are focused on Delves and Mythic 0/+ runs, completing neighborhood endeavors when they drop, and specifically welcoming returning players who want to avoid the “second job” feeling.

A community of adults (30–50+) who understand that busy jobs and families mean you might only log in once a week. Specifically built for players who want to “unwind and explore” on their own time with zero pressure to be active daily.

We plan to start clearing raid content once we have a few more folks ready to raid with us. Times and days are still up in the air and flexible.
