Some classes have something similar to a rotation but most just have an ability they hit every now and then and auto attack for days. To say there is absolutely no rotation is an exaggeration, but so is saying they have interesting and involved rotations. for instance, the raid rotation for frost mage is spamming frost bolt over and over and over and… oh, and don’t even get me started on paladins, whoms rotation literally is to activate a seal and auto attack.
That said, rogues probably come the closest to having a varied rotation, alongside warriors. But even their “rotations” are extremely simple and not very interesting to play with. Spamming backstab and the occasional finishing move is not very thrilling for me.
I used paladin as an example literally because of how bland the class plays on classic (something that was constantly complained about on vanilla). You literally just activate a seal and auto attack. There is nothing compelling or thrilling about the class. Whether you sit and watch intensely as your paladin swings their hammer for minor damage or you literally tab out to do something more interesting while you are killing things has nothing to do with players ‘lacking an attention span’.
It’s like arguing that watching paint dry is an unpopular hobby because people lack the attention span to sit and watch it dry.
Thankfully most classes are at least a little more interesting, but slow tedious gameplay was slow and tedious back then and there were no better options. No one was talking about how much they missed classic during TBC or WotLK, the smoother gameplay just felt better.
I doubt most players purposely want slow and tedious gameplay so much as they want the community and character building and… gosh, the sheer nostalgia of playing on Classic. Those are things I respect, but not your weak argument of players requiring a flaw to be unable to appreciate classic. That’s ridiculous.
Something about the latest retail update has me migrating back to classic. Honestly, I don’t think it’s just the update, but more of a long, complex situation. I have always loved retail, the collections, the graphics… the “pew pew” of it, but more and more it’s feeling convoluted and forgotten. It’s like a large beautiful tower that reaches high into the sky, but the base of it has been ignored and/or improperly maintained. I am a hardcore leveler. Endgame has never held much allure for me. I like leveling with valid professions that mean something. (looks sideways at retail blacksmithing)… I got a ton of enjoyment out of retail, and I’ll likely still play, but right now, Classic is more fun for me. TBC will be even better!
I’ll give you that. Frost mage is hilarious, when i was playing classic and looking at logs. It was just frostbolt x1000 or whatever. Rogues had a decent one i think. Wasn’t just sitting there spamming one button, a lot of it was using backstab to build combo points and such
I enjoy both games and for very different reasons.
Classic for me has been great to immerse myself in the leveling, to actually die even while leveling, have world PvP skirmishes, etc.
Once it game to end game my enthusiasm plummeted because crushing the same easy raid every week just gets boring fast.
Retails leveling kind of sucks to me, but I’ll try the revamp. But at max levels I have a lot of fun things to work on which keeps me entertained much longer (not forever).
Depends on what one comes to Classic for and how they play it, probably. If they got on the boost train, hit 60 ASAP, and quickly progressed to annihilating raids so badly that speedruns became the norm for any semblance of a challenge… well, they’re probably a little disappointed right now.
On the other hand, if they took a more chill approach to Classic, taking their time to level and run below-cap dungeons with friends, and generally treated the game as less of a competition, they might be getting some of those feeling of hollowness in retail that you mention.
Vanilla/classic shine as a medium to chill with friends with, but suck as a competitive game. Anybody looking to compete is better off on retail, while those just wanting to enjoy the game for its own sake might be better off in Classic.
Ya right. It takes forever to have a powerful character in retail I have 120s I dont want to log because it will take all prepatch to try and come close to gearing before SL so no. I think retail shouldnt have such a big power gap.
…then a lot of Burning Crusade. Then a lot of Wrath. Then a lot of Cataclysm. Then a lot of Mists. Then a lot of Garrison Wars. Then a lot of Legion. Then a lot of BFA…
…to get to the feeling of being a ‘god’.
I tried playing the new Classic, and while it was fun, it didn’t have the same appeal Vanilla did, and eventually quit playing it.
If you have more fun on Classic v2 than retail, then by all means, go play it. I know a few people that enjoy it more than Retail, but I’m not one of them.
The problem with Classic is that it’s the most fun when the realm is young and full of leveling players. As the realm gets old and shrinks it gets less fun.
I had the opposite happen, playing classic made me appreciate live again. Not waiting hours to get a group for anything. After playing classic for 8 months live seems waaaay fast and exciting. Nothing against classic, i loved it for awhile, just my personal experience.
