Gethsemane, in Hebrew, means “oil press”. It refers to a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives where Jesus prayed the night before his crucifixion, and where he was arrested. The name is derived from the words “gat,” meaning a place for pressing oil, and “shemanim,” meaning oils. The garden’s name and its significance as a place of intense suffering for Jesus, who was experiencing immense pressure and agony, create a symbolic parallel between the crushing of olives to produce oil and Jesus’s suffering under the weight of the world’s sins.
