Saw this today.
At the very least, itās definitely why the Wrath-authentic quest helper was never added.
Acting like this is a tinfoil hat conspiracy is just willful ignorance.
They literally came out and said this was coming though, so attribute it to incompetence, not tinfoil stories about how an addon that sells 10 guides a week is worth losing customers over.
Then why does the addon have in-built DRM for these guides?
This whole argument is so disingenuous. Itās clear they are providing a paid service for an addon that they made and doing so is against the ToS.
very tempted to make a Fruit Elf Hunter on HC
I wont, but itās very tempting
Didnāt aggrend release personal information about the griefers to savix or however you spell his name.
I have zero trust in aggrend.
Because the the guides cost money. They are guides made for the addon that is free. You want to make your own guides for it, put DRM, and charge money for them? YOU CAN!
There are 9 rules for addons.
- AddOns must be free of charge.
- AddOn code must be completely visible.
- AddOns must not negatively impact World of Warcraft realms or other players.
- AddOns may not include advertisements.
- AddOns may not solicit donations.
- AddOns must not contain offensive or objectionable material.
- AddOns must abide by World of Warcraft ToU and EULA.
- Blizzard Entertainment has the right to disable AddOn functionality as it sees fit.
- AddOns must not re-distribute in-game music and audio files or other copyrighted materials.
Nowhere in these rules does it stat that all contents for an addon must be free. It says the addon itself is to be free.
The addon in question being a tool that shows guides. The guides themselves arenāt an addon.
No one is under any illusion that both Zygor and Rested XP created addons specifically so they can sell their guides for those addons, but claiming that it is against the rules is just entirely false.
You donāt like it so you want it to be rule-breaking, just like those who donāt like GDKP want GDKP to be rule-breaking. It isnāt, so deal with it.
The addon has DRM that restricts access to content unless you pay for that content. The creators of the addon are the same people who make that paid content (hence the DRM).
This is a for-pay feature facilitated by the addon itself and is therefore against the ToS.
TSM has been working that way for years and they have done nothing btw.
Streamers also sell weak auras access with a sub to their channels.
Nice we are getting close here to what the people want ban all of this.
RXP will be useless in cata and beyond with the questing revamp
Itās only handy now because of the convoluted classic quest chains and leveling zones where you do 1/2 in 1 zone, go to another and do 1/3 the quests then return and complete the other 1/2, then go back again and do 1/3 again before moving to a new zone where you do 1/5
The addon itself has no such thing. You can go on curseforge right nowā¦ download it and use it to your hearts contentā¦ free of charge.
What the creators did, was create additional guides you have to purchase.
Furthermore you can create and import your own guides if you would like, but you donāt want to do that.
It isnāt against the terms of service. You just donāt like that you canāt have all their guides for free. Despite them developing an addon that you can make your own guides for and use. You donāt want to do the work, nor do you want to pay for their work despite them giving you the addon for free, and some of their guides for free.
It isnāt against the terms of serviceā¦ no matter how many times you say it is.
If you were to be right and it is against the terms of service then every addon that gets money in any wayā¦ which is a good chunk of them also needs to be taken down and removed because they got money in some way.
So let me put it the simplest possible way for you.
The addon cannot be monetized, locked down, or function differently for money.
The things that go in those addons, such a guides, weakauras, TSM money making, etc can all be monetized.
HC is DOA. Absolutely stupid content so let them go for the cash grab off dumb players who wonāt complete the road to 60.
If they really wanted to they could ban them for it as itās breaking the essence of the rule and they can decide to ban addons however they want. I just donāt think they care enough.
When Aggrend is part of that circleā¦ no wonder blizzard wonāt do anything.
Yeah, Blizzard can if they want, but guess what they donāt because it isnāt against the rules they set out.
Blizzard has in the past banned addons for breaking those rules, and they shut down due to it. If Blizzard wanted to go after addons that make money in some fashion they would have to go after a hell of a lot of addons. This would inadvertently have a negative impact on them because people would absolutely riot and quit their game due to their addons suddenly all being broken and unusable.
Personally. Iād prefer Blizzard strip all addons from the game in the hope that they can make better choices for the game in the future seeing as they wouldnāt have to take into consideration addon useā¦ Even if that means Iād have to relearn how to heal all over again.
I would encourage them to do so and like I said I believe that theyāre just using a backdoor to not break the āwritten ruleā. They are breaking the spirit of the law. Personally as a whole I consider TSM automaton, the paid feature is just a script to run.
While itās true, and I donāt think THAT is against ToS, it probably should be.
Imagine if Details had a free version that would only show Damage Done for top 3 only. Rest was behind paywall.
Or DBM that only had 2-3 call outs, and rest of the features were behind a paywall.
Or take any other big addon, and lock 95% of it behind a paywall.
Itās late. But I will watch the video tomorrow.
But either way I think if Blizzard really wanted to, they could disable certain API segments to make it stop working.
edit: Rules are not set in stone. Original rules probably didnāt account for a paywall, as itās rather unique to RestedXP and Zygor AFAIK, as Iāve never seen it before. So, rules can and should adapt.
I was seeing stuff about that too, they have direct lines of communication with him and use those lines to gain advantage in game or get people banned.
Charging for services related to an add-on is also against the rules. How are guides for an add-on not that?
100% this
Itās an obvious breach of ToS
