Do you remember when SL was in Alpha/Beta and they changed the intro narration for Forsaken to
“As one of the undead Forsaken, you have been reanimated by dark magic. Though shunned by the living, you tirelessly strive to protect them.”
And everyone was upset because that’s entirely not at all what forsaken are about or what they were supposed to be or do, so then Danuser tweeted about how it was just an unvetted placeholder and that it was datamined and unfinished and had this to say
"The lines are being updated. Changes will appear in a future build. It’s alpha, so they (and other things) are always subject to change.
Thanks for calling out issues like this. Please know we have only the best of intentions. Apologies for the consternation this caused."
Well… that’s going to be the Forsaken now.
It wasn’t a mistake, it was foreshadowing.
Your forsaken is no longer a badass edgelord forcefeeding poisoned pumpkins to prisoners, developing new strains of Blight, and committing war crimes in between cannibalizing your allies… you’re just poor misunderstood heroes now.
Calia is the new leader, whether you like it or not, and I find that unfortunate.
RIP forsaken race fantasy.

World of Peacecraft: Violence is bad.

More likely it was intentional but Blizzard wasn’t expecting the backlash and “fixed” it.

I remember. It annoyed me then and strangely enough it annoys me still.

I always liked how forsaken lost a bit of their marbles and went semi nuts. This… bleh.

Let’s take a moment to remember the official original description of the Forsaken in Vanilla:
Having broken free from the tyrannical rule of the Lich King, a renegade group of undead seek to retain their own free will while destroying all those who oppose them. Known as the Forsaken, this group is dedicated to serving their leader, the banshee queen Sylvanas Windrunner. These dark warriors have established a secret stronghold beneath the ruins of Lordaeron’s former capital city. Situated deep beneath the cursed Tirisfal Glades, the labyrinthine Undercity is a sprawling bastion of evil. Within its shadowy confines, Sylvanas’ royal apothecaries scramble to develop a devastating new plague - one which will not only eradicate their hated Scourge rivals, but the rest of humanity as well. To further their dark aims, the Forsaken have entered into an alliance of convenience with the primitive, brutish races of the Horde. Holding no real loyalty for their newfound comrades, the Forsaken have duped them into fighting against their common enemy - the Lich King. Only time will tell how these disciples of doom will fare in their mission of vengeance.

Man that sounds awesome. Like the sole existence of forsaken is retribution.

Undead should never have been Horde in the first place. But that being said, the original conception of the Forsaken - Horde ties aside - was fantastic.

It was at one point. Now its “hold me, and tell me I’m still pretty.”

I’m just hoping that when M$ takes over they give Metzen 7 1/2 dumptrucks full of money and a contract giving him full autonomy over the Franchise again so he doesn’t have to deal with the stress and anxiety of answering to Kotick. This setting needs him back in the worst ways.

He wasn’t perfect, but the man had a specific vision. Consistency is key in a long-running franchise.

I always felt a lot of players had single visions of this race. Like I’ve talked with someone who thought all Forsaken only exist to serve Sylvanas.
I honestly think this is terrible for the Forsaken of trying to lump them into one group when as far back as vanilla we saw many Forsaken with different outlooks and goals.
Undead should have never been Horde and Night Elves should never have been Alliance. They took the four factions of WC3 and tried to make them fit into two sections. I don’t think it worked well at all, because the Forsaken were never going to mesh with Thrall’s Horde, and man poor Night Elves basically being reduced to the punching bag for both Horde and Alliance.

To be fair, I DO think the Undead provide the biggest opportunity for evolution. It would seem natural that undead who were scourged and wanted vengeance against the Lich King would have to find a new purpose after he was defeated. Also, new Undead might not harbor the same feelings if they were brought to undeath outside of the original control of the Lich King.
Opinions can certainly differ, but if there was some foresight, Blizzard shouldn’t have ventured down such absolute language like “bastion of evil,” “eradicate humanity,” and “dark aims.”
Some worked with the tauren to create a cure for undeath, others tortured prisoners to test their plagues.
The thing is they did the same exact thing to Bolvar too. In Legion he was being set up for a heel turn and embracing becoming the Lich King…but Danuser had to give Sylvanas her ‘yas queen! Destroy the one ring…er helm of domination!’ moment and turn him into a blubbering baffoon.

Which ones were those? Serious question.

I think I may have watched “Nightmare Before Christmas” one too many times before making a Forsaken character.
Shadowlands isn’t canon. Also remember Bolvar in dragonblight man was an absolute genius.
