I think Ion is very passionate about the game both as a dev and a player. The disconnect comes from him being a very specific type of player that only represents a small portion of the actual playerbase.
Maybe he doesn’t understand other playstyles or maybe he just doesn’t care, but either way he definitely builds the game he wants to play.

No, and anyone who thinks he does is foolish. He is there to collect a paycheck.
They need a new lead.

With the way this community has been treated over the past few months alone doesn’t exactly make me feel like it was a joke.
Instead it seems like probably the most honest self admission I’ve seen.
You say anymore like he actually ever did lol.
ion never had passion for the game. only the highest end of it which may as well be totally separate.

I don’t know him to answer that question ,op,but what I seen ,not really,he may have along time ago and situation changed him over time.
I think he’s being replaced and it will be announced at blizzconline. I’m not joking. Cory Stockton suddenly has game director in his twitter title and there isn’t space on the schedule for a new game.

Well, does Ion get freedom to implement his creative vision for the game ?? That’s what needs to be answered.

He does. Why do you think we have the train wreck of a game we do right now.

I feel he just gets dictated on what he needs to do. This is just my assumption though, I can be wrong.

I think he does given the fact he actually tries to reply to randos on twitter whenever he has time. I’m kinda over the Ion bashing. Yes, he does carry the responsibility on his shoulders but it’s not like he doesn’t have investors and owners to keep happy along with trying to navigate a team of content creators, developers, writers, etc. etc. Through a pandemic while releasing and working on a new expansion/patches.
Most people that are all “fIrE iOn” (which it already shows you’re a horrible, selfish person if you ask for someone to get fired during a pandemic unless they’re threatening others lives - like eg politicians) are also completely unaware he joined blizzard shortly before Wrath was released so whoever is all “he ruined the game” should really wonder why they’ve been continuing to play a game for eleven-ish years now that they think is trash.

Where? Who is he responding to on Twitter? And how does that mean he has passion for the game

Well he’s not required to do that now is he? He could just never reply to anything, but he does. And most of the time it’s not just mythic world first guild members that he replies to.
If he didn’t give a damn about the game and its players he wouldn’t reply. Honestly, if I was in his position I probably wouldn’t cause it’s the most disrespectful community possible.
Even if he did I imagine that wouldn’t result in the game being drastically changed.
Despite the fact that the forums directs all their hate to whichever person is being the face of the game and despite that he is the game director, Ion still has a boss.
I doubt he can just decide to remove all the stuff that’s there to pad out play time, even if he wanted to do it. Game development usually isn’t a dictatorship even for the boss.
That said it would help if the entire team had passion for the game, but they’d probably need to change some things around. Underpaying your employees so they have to choose between food and rent while your company boasts record profits has a habit of fostering spite rather than passion.

He’s a raid logger. He’s never had a passion for any aspect of this game besides raiding and it shows.
