I think his passions are very particular.
The one thing I’ve routinely heard claimed is that he’s legitimately good at raid design, and for that… yeah. Sure. But he’s not lead Encounter/Raid design, he’s head over everything. And taken as a whole, he’s no where near as good at the “everything else” part as he is at what he seems to actually care about.
Now, full disclosure, I’m firmly in the “axe him” camp in terms of decisions he’s made and impact he’s had on the game. No matter how good he is in terms of making a fun/epic raid, his leadership in all other fields makes this so insignificant it’s a footnote, not a counter-argument.
But if we have to compromise, keeping him on doing the things he’s actually good at and cares about would be acceptable to me. He just has no place being an overall leader and decision maker for the entire game.
Also, putting someone else in charge would probably mean someone else in front of the cameras, which would be another major bonus. Ion… Ion is terrible at PR. Put someone else in and you’ve at least a chance at fewer interviews and live media releases resulting in torch-and-pitchfork mobs.
