Random Game Freeze - Connection problem?

Hi there!

I’ve been experiencing an issue for the last month or so when playing the game that occurs most often when engaged in combat (raid, BG, open world, arena) where the players around me stop moving and taking actions, but my character is able to move. When this occurs, it can last anywhere from a few seconds to 15-20 seconds. This issue occurs even after I have disabled all add-ons. I’ve done a full driver wipe/reinstall (using DDU for the wipe, EVGA Geforce 1070ti), uninstalled/reinstalled the game, tried all the versions of DirectX in video settings, turned down all graphical settings, and even tried a program like ExitLag with no resolution to the problem.

I think I’ve narrowed the problem down to my network as I’ve noticed a significant spike in latency while monitoring my connection when the issue occurs (I saw my ms go up to 3,000+ in one instance). Below is information from WinMTR during a session where I experienced the lag. I called my ISP (ATT) and they’re going to send me a new modem (mine is from 2019), but I’m not optimistic about that solution. They also mentioned that they see no issues with my connection. I have links to a video and an image from ExitLag showing the spike in latency, but unfortunately it won’t let me post those direct links here. I can embed them in text if you would like me to share them.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated - if I need to run more diagnostics or get more information I’d be happy to do so!

Hi Aexdawg!

I am sorry to hear you are having issues with playing the game.

These are symptoms of network issues while playing the game. Basically your client is no longer communicating with the game server causing an offset (IE Lag).

When you are playing an Online game like WoW, your computer is in CONSTANT communication with the server. Your computer is relaying every keypress that you are making to the server so it can update the players around you on your actions. The server is also sending you every keypress from EVERY player in your Raid/BG.

So what can happen if you stop receiving information from the server is it looks like time has frozen. You can still move around but your computer is no longer being informed what is changing in the world around you. To the other players they probably just see you standing in one location and running in place.

Now going over your MTR data. To be honnest the sample size of the data is quite small. About 1/10th of what I would normally recommend. You sent 200 packets, i like to see 2000+. However I do see there is some MAJOR latency issues when your connection leaves the home. I am seeing spikes of 835ms

It looks like at the D-Slam since this appears to be a DSL connection. In a healthy connection you want this first jump outside the home to preferably be under 20ms. As normally the first jump is somewhere in your local neighborhood.

I would try running a more extensive MTR, and possibly follow up with your ISP.

Thank you for your response! For the record, I have ATT fiber, 1000mbps, no data caps.

Do you recommend I run the test for a longer time period? I stopped the test probably 1 minute or so after the lag spike because I figured that would be enough data to diagnose.

When I talked to my ISP they said “everything looked fine” and that there were “no diagnostics they could run”. Not sure how far I’m going to get there… I ran a test on ping.canbeuseful.com and I’m seeing spikes of 1000ms at fairly regular intervals with an average of 121ms and a minimum of 101ms (which seems high for fiber…)

I live in Nashville, TN where ATT infrastructure was affected on Christmas day. Anecdotally, I can’t recall these issues prior to that particular event.

Hi Aexdawg!

Thanks for getting back to me! I am shocked to hear you are on a Fiber connection. Nothing in your 1 min test reflects that it should be a Fiber connection. :flushed:

I assumed you were on a DSL connection because your first hop is listed as such.

I would for sure follow up with your ISP because something appears to be going on with your connection. To put things into perspective. I don’t even have a Fiber Line (LUCKY YOU! /jealousy) I’m on a Cable connection in the Central United States. I am able to send packets to Australia and back in 100ms. On your line you cant even make it to downtown Nashville TN and back in 800ms. I would expect to see on fiber that MS to be 9ms or under.

A buddy of mine was making fun of me last night for my garbage latency as we were trying to figure this out last night

I’m having a technician come out tomorrow to see if he can diagnose and fix the issue (for the low, low price of $99). Hopefully we can get a proper solution!

After playing a little bit this evening, I’m seeing way better results and haven’t been able to replicate the issue that I was experiencing before. Below is a log from WinMTR (taken from a BG), which looks A LOT better than it did from my log last night. I’m also locked in at around 25ms in-game which feels about right where I should be based on my location to the server and connection (was lucky to be under 100ms before).

ATT said “everything looked fine” on their end when I had called them, so I’m wondering if there was a stealth fix they did without telling me? Either way, I’ll consider this resolved; thank you for the help in deciphering what was going on - very much appreciated.

Hi Aexdawg!

I am glad to hear things are getting better! Looking at your last Trace Route I can also see some major improvements! I still saw that your first hop hit a spike of 772 MS which is a bit odd. But it couldnt have been for more then a few MS as your Average is now in the single digits which is where it should be expected!

This is quite common for ISP’s. When a ticket is created it can be actioned by many different teams. Since we were able to see that the issues you were experiencing were at the Nashville Node. Most likely the issue was resolved on site.

Now for the Sketchy part! Most ISPs have a Technician fee like you pointed out of $99. Now this fee is normally only charged if there are no issues found. Now if you had an honest ISP they should reach out to you and tell you the issues were resolved outside your Home. Some times they will still send the tech and you will get billed the $99 because everything is back to normal.

So make sure to call and cancel.
