Some people claim that 2/2/6 is the best, some want to have 2/4/12, some other compositions exist la la la. Is it truly scaled appropriately? Are raids scaled linearly (by the number of players) or by some other method? I understand that coordinating more people is harder, but what is the intuition for why 10 players are “so much better” than 18 or some other number? Thank you in advance.
Just depends on how difficult a raid’s base difficulty is. You COULD 10 man Ny’alotha with 2/2/6 however even with scaling that will stress healers, so groups will tend to up the raid’s total numbers to fit the difficulty of a raid. People tend to only take what they need for raids.
Except for Mythic difficulty, they scale between 10 and 25 players. What ends up happening is there are a few points where the scaling works well with group ratios. Basically, between them, you’ll have either relatively low DPS if you bring another healer or low healing if you don’t. Other than that, a lot of people prefer smaller groups since not only is coordinating people easier.
Also, the mechanics scale too, if I remember correctly. It’s not just the damage, but also how many are effected for mechanics that target players individually.
Thank you very much for your reply! I have a follow up question if that is okay: Is it preferred for healers to also be able to play a damage spec to adjust for the changing numbers? What a dream it would be to have a non-dps hunter spec lol, like BM could have pet tanks, it would be so cool!
I could be completely wrong but it was my understanding that the scaling wasn’t completely linear, that there were break points.
So say hypothetically say there is no significant difference between 13 and 15 people, so at that point you want 15 people because those extra 2 won’t make it harder but will add to the output. Add a 16th person though and the difficulty jumps to a level that it becomes much harder until you reach the next break point.
Thank you for your reply! I wish that they would release the formulas lol.
Firm believer in 20 mans. It allows fights to be clean, but not overly punishing towards a single player.
