Questions for Paladin Tanks

Which is what your main tank will be, warriors will block almost all hits against them. It also provides damage reduction against all attacks. So even if you aren’t tanking the warriors in the raid will love it.

In my experience only rank 1 Holy Shield was used, for the extra block. Consecration has a better spell coefficient and is the better spell to spam for AoE threat. Spamming rank 3 holy shield on top of consecration will have you oom really fast.

The additional block is so minimal that it’s laughable.

As MT Warrior I kind of want BoSanc on me because I’ve never had it before - how minimal is the block? Also, is the Holy Damage reflected from it good?

about ret aura amounts of damage reflection and upto 24 damage blocked. without Holy multipliers it’s pretty naff.

??? Additional block from what? BoS reduces damage from all sources and deals holy damage when you block. Or are you talking about holy shield? 30% block is hardly minimal or laughable.

Blessing of Sanctuary
Rank 4

135 mana 30 yd range

Instant

Places a Blessing on the friendly target, reducing damage dealt from all sources by up to 24 for 5 min. In addition, when the target blocks a melee attack the attacker will take 35 Holy damage. Players may only have one Blessing on them per Paladin at any one time.

I see, 24 from all sources for 5 minutes is an ok chunk for MT. I’m even more intrigued by BoSanc’s TPS output with that 35 Holy thorn-like damage since I block a ton.

It’s not an op Buff by any means, but with atleast 4 paladns in a raid, there is no reason not to put it on tanks.

Also, holy shield is good, it just costs way too much Mana. If you are tanking multiple mobs, you are better off spamming consecration. If tanking just one mob/boss, not all of the holy shield charges will get consumed, so it’s a waste.

I agree, and I plan on having 5! Paladins are just too good.

So hey, what raid loot does a prot paladin absolutely need? I’m guessing T1 might not be so good for them, maybe the 8 piece for party heal but hmmmm I dunno

A combination of spell caster and tanking plate with a fast spell power weapon and depending on the rest of their gear either a tanking shield or a caster shield if those exist in classic.

Ideally you want uncrushable,as much block value as you can muster then as much spell power as you can muster. Spellpower consumes are a must as is boosting your tank stats.

Prot pally gearing was a mess IN TBC, It can only get worse in classic.

Ok, dumb question maybe but, why strive for Defense? Don’t you want to be critted as a Paladin for all the prot tree procs?

You will never be be a main tank as a paladin over a prot warrior… ever. You can gimmick a few fights here and there, but paladins are not tanks in vanilla.

They are godlike healers tho

Wanting to tank as a paladin in vanilla is like being a master swordsman wanting to fight a bear, but instead of using a sword… he uses a basketball.

Play however you want, try out different specs while leveling, nothing is set in stone. Get in with a good guild and see if they are willing to try stuff out, experiment and have fun, thats what the games for

In short no. Stressing your healers out is a not a fun experience for the tanks or the healers. I’ve advocated for prot pallies but purely under the guise of add tanks for a couple of reasons.

  1. Boss adds can’t crush as they’re not high enough level unless you forgo defense completely.
  2. If they do crit they can basically sustain your redoubt uptime to the point where you’re only getting 1 crit every 5 seconds which “should” be more manageable.
3.add crits hurt substantially less than Boss crits or crush’s.

I personally feel that prot pallies have their niches in raids but I’m not 100% sure they’re worth a slot over a holy or even ret pally. They need to be in a group with a ret pally for sanct aura, they can’t seal swap without 2.0 crusader strike, and their regen for threat is pretty bad outside of consumes.

TBC “fixed” the prot pally.

There is no figuring stuff out in Vanilla… its been available for 14 years… EVERYTHING has already been figured out and tested to death. there are BiS lists for even the most absurd class builds… even a fire damage proc rogue that builds fire/spell damage to cheese a proc on a random item

Paladins can AOE power level people up or farm SM as a tank and a few other places… but at the end of the day… they are not main tanks… for anything

Hell… they can barely off-tank properly

Yeah I see, it’s things like those prot talents which make me go “oh, these guys were made to be aoe tanking, sustaining some mitigation from crits from many mobs on them”

And holy shield’s mitigation makes sense for that too. I can’t wait for strat and emperor runs with a prot pally, see all of this in action

Strat dead runs will be a complete joke. The pally will be drinking every second or third pack but the speed that they will be able to be melted will be hilarious.

Emperor runs will be “harder” as they will rely more on the group to handle the finicky parts.

Prot paladins make the best 5man tanks. In raids, it’s all warrior tanks and druids can try with lesser results.

From the streamers i have seen mobs hit not hard at all. You can aoe pull. Also you can do tons of dmg. I think prot pallies will do fine.

This gets you everything you need.

I would go for something like this. Holy Shield will do more threat total than a judgement would and is cheaper mana wise also. Saving judgement for when you need it is preferable. As tank, always BoSalvation all dps.

There are trinkets as have been stated, but there is a quest item from EPL
http://classicdb.ch/?item=13289
It will help you out.

Consecration, judgement, or if you went with a 31/20 build Holy shock.

Judgement of Justice prevents fleeing. If you have a warlock in the group, have them apply r1 Curse of recklessness instead.

The same thing as a fighter except that we don’t have taunt so stay near to drag pulls into our consecration? Paladin’s have 1-3 “Oh crap!” buttons based on the situation. Warriors have shield wall for a few seconds of 50% damage reduction or Last Stand for a 30% health heal and max health increase. Paladins can Divine Intervention you if you crap out of mana and the fight becomes unwinnable. They also have Lay on Hands which can full heal themselves in a pinch. Just remember that it drains their mana completely to use it on others. Divine Shield is very useful in 2 ways: first is the debuff drop and the second is used as a very short immunity in do or die situations (your total threat is just dropped to 0 at the start and will be returned with any threat generated in the interim added to the previous total when the buff runs out or manually removed)

Although not optimal, all of them except threat swapping fights. If you do manage to main tank some raid bosses, Innervate will be your best friend with SoR+JoW so make friends with your druids.

What? They have plate, a shield, and use almost the same equipment as a warrior pre-raid. What factor makes them less tanky than a warrior?

This is blatant bias. Taunt in any form is not necessary for dungeons and paladins have superior utility to a warrior. Please describe what situations taunts will be useful in dungeons? If your group doesn’t suck, BoProtection is very effective when used as an emergency “taunt.”
